Good habits and an excellent attitude make great cellists. It doesn't hurt to love music too. I love music and I love to share my passion with my students.
Having a teacher who is an experienced performer is an important quality in a teacher. I am a professional classical musician currently working as a freelance cellist in the Chicago area. I play with Chicago Philharmonic, the Northbrook Symphony, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Northwest Indiana Symphony, among others. Before coming to Chicago I played for 13 seasons with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
I have taught privately for over 10 years including 2 years in Paris. My teaching is a reflection of my teacher, Phillippe Muller. I studied with Msr. Muller while studying at the Paris Conservatory. Msr. Muller is currently a Professor of Cello at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
About Wei
Even though I have been teaching and performing on the cello for most of my life, it's not all there is to who I am. I am a chef (almost--12 weeks to go), a mom, a wife. I have a cute little Tibetan Terrier that loves visitors. My husband and I love hiking in beautiful places. Studying with me

My name is Jerry. I LOVE music and passing my knowledge on to others. I have played many different instruments in many different kinds of bands. It all one major thing in common, it was FUN! If you are not having fun while learning an instrument you won't want to learn. Lessons can be fun AND educational at the same time. I have had many parents tell me I'm one of the best teachers they have ever seen. (A couple of them were public school teachers themselves). I truly want my students to succeed and I will do everything in my power to help them accomplish that!

Let's get you playing the music you've been hearing in your head! Each week, you'll get a personalized practice guide tailored to your goals. I love playing and teaching the cello, and I cant wait to share that passion with you.
My teaching style is as slow as you need, as fast as you can go. Technique should always serve the music, so we'll focus on creating art and telling the story that you want to tell. I'll work with you to create a personalized study plan that is engaging, positive, and progress-oriented.
Lessons are open to anyone, even if you don’t have a cello yet! I have worked with everyone from beginning students learning the basics of holding the bow to advanced players & colleagues looking for a discerning ear.
I generally recommend 45 minutes for beginners, but there's no time limit; I love to dive into details and can work as long as you can!
As an added bonus, all new students will receive the 70-page Cello Handbook I recently published as part of my online ...

I have over 6 years of experience teaching private lessons in addition to teaching seminars on songwriting and music business at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts and SUNY JCC.
I teach both online and in-person lessons at my studio in Nashville and offer 30 and 60 minute lessons.
I have played over 1,000 shows, both solo and as an auxiliary musician for other touring acts. I performed on over 30 albums and have composed for radio, television, and internet video series, including sharing the stage with members of the 10,000 Maniacs. I've been featured in The New York Times, on the CBS Evening News, and on NPR.
While each student is different, I do generally start everyone on either Suzuki or the Essential Elements books.
As one of my old teachers said, “I'm not teaching you how to play cello, I'm teaching you how to teach yourself how to play cello.” This is something I strive for. Students will not only learn technical skills( how to play their instrument, read ...

I have experience teaching in a variety of settings level students. I am currently teaching students as a private teacher and I helped some of my students’ audition for San Diego youth symphony and school orchestra assignments. I also have experience not only teaching young musicians in a small group system also performing and playing as a cellist of chamber ensembles and orchestra.
As a music teacher, it is my goal that I want to give back the rich knowledge that I have received during my studies. I want to use my education and knowledge gained from SDSU to help students obtain a proper and valuable education. I desire to see young musicians refine and expand their passions and talents in music and use them to touch the lives of others.

I had no experience with string instruments and feel I'm on my way to playing the cello competently. Byron keeps things fun and moving along at a good pace. He's especially good at diagnosing the cause of any difficulties I'm having."

Eleven months later, our weekly 60 minute lessons are very enjoyable and I am progressing well. JoAnn has been very accommodating with her schedule, last-minute cancellations, and patience. Sometimes I dread my next lesson because I've been too busy to practice or too fatigued from work, but an hour later I leave with a smile on my face and more confidence with my instrument. Hey, this is fun!
I would not hesitate to recommend JoAnn to anyone, especially a busy, working adult. She is a very skilled cellist and teacher, incorporating many lessons from other disciplines into this. While her teaching course has been different than I expected (lots of focus on slow playing and no vibrato yet), I believe my playing is much, much better because of it. In the beginning I had planned on a couple months of weekly lessons. Now a year later, I have no intention of stopping - way too much fun! Thank you JoAnn!"

Cello thumb position is one of the big leaps of technique for advancing cellists and is one of the skills that sets more advanced students from the intermediate. This new technique opens up the higher ranges of the instrument and allows us to play more advanced solos and etudes. This technique is not something you should rush into though! Make sure to take things slowly at first and master the basic concepts before moving on. When Should You Focus on Your Cello Thumb Position? There have to …

Keeping good cello posture is extremely important for preventing injuries to your back, shoulders, and neck. It takes thousands of hours of dedicated practice to become a cello player, and keeping good posture will help to improve your cello practice by letting you practice longer and more effectively. Posture is easier to practice than it is to repair, so try to build good habits as early as you can and keep them. This article will give you five specific tips for improving your posture to r …

The cello is an absolutely beautiful instrument that calls countless numbers of people to play it. Adult students are sometimes the most challenging to find pieces for as they don’t want to play the “kiddie” songs that many younger students are excited about. These pieces for younger students are short, based on simple folk songs that children know, and generally do not feel challenging enough for many adult students. So what popular cello pieces are out there that adult students can u …
