Hawaiian Harmonies in Huntington: Learning Ukulele in Huntington Beach, CA

By Matt Z. - Huntington Beach Guitar Teacher

I’m Matt Z. and I teach ukulele lessons in Huntington Beach, CA. I actually knew you were going to read this, so I read your horoscope earlier and you will never guess what it said: “There’s nothing more soothing than sitting on the beach with your feet buried in the sand, listening to the ocean waves crash onto shore, and strumming some joyful, island harmonies on the ukulele. Trust me.” Ready to take the universe’s advice? Let’s get started!

Short of being in Hawaii or the South Pacific, there’s no better place to find that sunny, tropical environment than in Surf City itself- Huntington Beach, California. If you find yourself in the capital of Orange County and hoping to pick up the fun-loving ukulele at any level, there are plenty of opportunities for you to learn, grow, and get exposure as an up-and-coming artist.

First of all, you are going to need a ukulele (unless you are seeking a prolific career as an air ukulele player, then you can skip to the next paragraph). If you don’t have one already, no need to worry; decent ukulele starter kits are available at a fraction of the cost of most other instruments. Apart from standard music stores like Guitar Center and Sam Ash Music, there are some solid local establishments that would be thrilled to help you hit the ground running with your ukulele lessons in Huntington Beach. The best of the local stores is Island Bazaar, a one-stop-shop for all things ukulele, located at 16582 Gothard St. Suite R, Huntington Beach, CA 92647, (714) 843-9350. Island Bazaar sells ukuleles, accessories, books, CDs, and DVDs; everything you could possibly need to get started!

Once you’ve bought a ukulele, you need to get signed up for lessons. There’s no better place on earth than TakeLessons to find affordable, quality lessons from highly trained and educated musicians, all of whom have been screened, background checked and are patiently awaiting your call! The great thing about ukulele lessons is that they are effective for students of any age. Young children can learn ukulele easily because it is smaller with less spacing between frets and strings, while advanced students of any age can easily achieve more virtuosic techniques due to the ease of navigation achieved by the instrument’s size. So if you’re on the fence, just take the plunge! You’ll be surprised how simple it is to get started with ukulele lessons in Huntington Beach!

Ok, so now you’re in regular ukulele lessons in Huntington Beach and you can play a wicked rendition of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” Israel Kamakawiwo-style. Congrats! But now, you need to play in front of your future adoring fans and become the most famous ukulele-er in history! So how do you get exposure in Huntington Beach? Island Bazaar has regular concerts and performing groups who meet five days out of the week. However, the place to be for artists in Huntington is downtown on Main Street. Tuesday Nights are Surf City Nights, and Main Street is closed to all traffic for a weekly market night with local vendors and entertainers. This is the ideal place to register as a performer and get yourself some exposure, so sign up here: http://www.surfcitynights.com/performer. Make sure you have a valid ID and have some business cards and even some CDs of your glorious playing to sell.

During the rest of the week, there are plenty of amateur musicians and entertainers competing for tourist attention downtown, so get out there and be confident in the FANTASTIC training you received at TakeLessons. You are fully prepared to rock the faces off of tourists and locals with the soothing sounds of your optimistic instrument! Soon enough you will join the list of music legends who call Huntington Beach their home: Avenged Sevenfold, Reel Big Fish, The Vandals, The Dirty Heads, Hellogoodbye, Suburban Legends, Emblem3, Matt Costa, (Hed)p.e., Dryden Mitchell of Alien Ant Farm, The Offspring’s Dexter Holland, Christian Jacobs of The Aquabats, Scott Weiland of Velvet Revolver & Stone Temple Pilots, Joe and Luke McGarry of Pop Noir, David Silveria of Korn, and Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean who co-wrote “Surf City”, the #1 hit from 1963 that gave Huntington Beach its nickname.

Lastly, don’t forget that (insert the name of person you want to impress here) loves the ukulele and thinks it’s super dreamy. So find a great teacher for ukulele lessons in Huntington Beach, sink your toes in the sand, and get started today!
