My first opportunity to teach songwriting came while I was in charge of the music program at Santa Monica Montessori school. The kids there all new that I was a songwriter and played in a band, so they would freely come to me with their ideas. I decided to make a songwriting unit of study that culminated in a final showing of their creations. Some chose to use the school mac laptop computers running garage band to flesh out their ideas and create a sound recording, while some elected a more traditional approach of pencil and paper and an instrument or voice as they crafted their songs.

A gifted singer-songwriter of Pop, Rock, World and Reggae songs that possess that timeless quality. He has recorded with 2 time Grammy nominated producer Barry Goldberg (Eagles, Robbie Robertson, Verve Pipe, Marilyn Manson). He has released three CDs, had songs featured in compilations and in feature length film, toured North America, and taught guitar, piano, and voice both privately and in an all ages Montessori school in Santa Monica. He consistently played in a variety of bands while earning an A.A. in music from SMC and later a B.A. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA, where he earned distinction as an excellent student both academically and in musical performance. *** Lesson Details ***
I believe in custom tailoring a curriculum to fit the students needs, while still providing them with the same basic tools all musicians need to develop in order to play well (both with themselves and with others). Obviously, some students require more structure and discipline, while others have a stronger work ethic. Some may even need a teacher that is more laid back to balance them out, but more so my job is to facilitate learning and guide. A student studying with me can expect to receive a general assessment of their skill level in musicianship, theory, and on their instrument within the first couple of lessons (or once I feel that I have experienced enough of their abilities). Based on that assessment, I will work with the student to develop a plan of small goals to work toward. Progress will be monitored weekly and larger goals will unfold naturally in accord with the students own dreams and musical ambitions. Within 3 to 6 months of study with me students will learn to play a range of simple songs, basic scales, exercises, finger positions, and have a solid foundation for listening to, and playing to rhythm.

Full acoustic upright, Wurlizter electric piano, and keyboard synths, a computer based digital audio workstation...guitars...percussion...in the front room of my house. Has a full set-up for a band.

Basically, what you need to start is motivation and commitment! Otherwise, I will provide you with informed recommendations. Equally important, at your first lesson I will work with you to determine what specific goals you have so we can track them, together, and meet them, one by one!

Iâm an adult who has played the piano for years on and off. Because of my prior experience I often ask questions that a beginner would not think about. Such as, is this a better scale fingering than the traditional one? Or what is a common key to use to accompany a sing-a-along group on a piano? Dorothea consistently provides intelligent and sometimes surprising answers to my questions.
She also is very focused on what you want to accomplish. Unlike past piano teachers, and I loved them all, who seemed intent on my learning the full classical literature, Dorothea asks what your main interest is. Is it composition, or playing, or arranging? Then she drives the lessons in that direction. Very customized lessons.
Another interesting example is scales. Whatâs new in that area, I thought? So she pulls out a book that has clearly defined levels of accomplishment. For example, if you can play the C major scale, quarter note = 80, with your left hand, you get one âpointâ. If you can do the same with your right, thatâs another point. Playing with both hands together is yet another point. Playing both hands together but in contrary motion is another point. This pattern is repeated at increasing tempos and the number of points accumulated indicates your skill level. With that approach itâs not a matter of how long one practices but one practices long enough to reach a desired, measurable, skill level. I think that approach is novel and I had never seen it used before meeting Dorothea. In short, she is an interesting teacher with interesting ideas, methods, and very student focused. I don't think you will find a better teacher.

When you take lessons from me, you will be taking the fastest route to success: playing a lot of guitar! We will cover everything from music theory to technique to soloing to playing your favorite songs, but we won't be spending the lesson time talking. Everything you learn will be quickly put into a playable, practical context, so that you learn the most, and have the most fun!
I have high expectations for my students, and practicing every day is a requirement. But because my curriculum is personally tailored to each individual student, and involves a lot of the music that the student is most passionate about, I find my students often love to practice! I also use a variety of musical texts to enrich the students learning (including, but not limited to, Practical Theory for Guitar by Don Latarski, Effortless Mastery by Kenny Werner, the Real Book series, and various Mel Bay books).
After about 6 months, a new student will have learned most basic chords and scales, the building blocks of playing solos, and a good handful of their favorite songs! More experienced students will have enriched their understanding of guitar and how it relates to the music they love, and music that is new to them!

I specialize in rock, pop, folk, and jazz guitar styles. I focus on material that the individual student is excited about and wants to learn, and incorporate fundamentals and other pertinent skills necessary to maximize the students ability.
For bass guitar I specialize in rock and pop.
Contemporary songwriting technique is not genre-specific and I can teach any type of songwriting, from hip hop to country to rock. I have been a songwriter for 7 years, and have released 3 full length albums and one EP of my original material. I was also a student in the pilot classes which later became USC's Popular Music degree program. These classes focused on songwriting and were taught by industry veterans Chris Sampson and Richard Smith.
I was trained in advanced music theory as part of my degree from USC. I integrate theory into my other lessons but I can also teach theory alone.
I have advanced skills with ProTools and have extensive experience (5 years) in recording, from professional studios to personal home setups.

I believe the most basic goal for a guitar student is to be able to play a song in it's entirety, whether it's by themselves or with other musicians/music students. Of course it is more enjoyable if you can have lessons in person. But with modern technology, live online lessons come in a close second. I've been teaching for 40 years and I've been doing online lessons for about 7 years. I'm located in West Hills, which is a suburb of Los Angeles. If you are not local, using skype with a webcam works out surprisingly well. I have students in Sydney, London, Hong Kong and many cities throughout the US.
*** Use a Piano or a Keyboard for Practicing ***
I am not fussy if you use a keyboard but it needs to be a "weighted action" keyboard, so that it feels similar to a real piano. Ideally, you should also have a pedal and a stand if you are using an electronic keyboard.
*** Unconventional Approach ***
Each student is taught with a customized approach. You get to tell me what areas you want to focus on. Sometimes there may be a block or something that is a weakness that you need to bolster. Sometimes it is a narrow niche within music that you want to give your attention to. One way that I'm unconventional is that I actually have found that it is NOT better if you practice every day. I recommend that you build in about three days of rest per week. Just like people who work out at the gym learn that the off days are when the muscles regenerate, the same is true for your brain. This allows your subconscious mind to do its job and your progress will actually be faster, not slower. Another example of my unique approach is how I treat beginners. Even though you may not yet read music very well or at all, it doesn't mean that you can't start working concurrently on a more advanced piece. This is because READING notation is a comparatively slow process, but why should we restrict your ability to play something that you love to your rate of reading music? Usually, our FINGER TECHNIQUE develops much faster than our READING so I'm happy to guide you on one or two more difficult pieces and help spoon-feed it to you, bit by bit, "by rote."

I feel grateful that my own training included top teachers of both the “German School” and “Russian School” of piano technique. Generally, the German School teaches how to play with close-to-the-key hand placement preparation and fingering efficiency, and is known for great speed and accuracy. The Russian School teaches how to play with gravity and relaxation and is known for beautiful tone production. Each approach has its strengths and weaknesses. In my own playing and teaching, I have incorporated the good aspects of each and have discarded the bad. I was invited to be a guest soloist with the Culver City, Topanga, and Brentwood symphonies as well as the Pepperdine University Orchestra.
I have won many awards and scholarships, such as the Nelson Riddle Scholarship, the Bernard Adelstein award, the Palisades Symphony Scholarship, and more.
In addition to trumpet playing, I am also an accomplished singer/songwriter/pianist, and have composed hundreds of songs and recorded dozens with several bands in the Los Angeles area including The Leisurelies, Brandon and Leah, Oddus, and more.

Currently I still primarily work as a full time musician so I will only be teaching part time. I am finishing and working on releasing my fourth studio album and play shows regularly both in and out of town. I was signed to Sony and Avex in Japan from 2007-2010 and still tour Japan once a year and spend much of my time in the studio writing songs for commercials and other artists.
