Lean how to play bluegrass banjo including melody and finger picking. Also "Clawhammer" techniques.

About Richard

I have studied, performed and taught music for over 30 years. Accordion was my first instrument at age 7 which was a great introduction to the keyboard, melody and harmony. That was followed by guitar and other stringed instruments (Banjo, Ukulele) as well as drums. I studied with great teachers

Richard was great! Looking forward to more lessons for my daughter!

We are 2 beginners taking the class together. We have taken 3 lessons. Rich is teaching us finger strengthening exercises, chords and notes which we can use to play songs, and encouraging us to find melodies using just the strings. The lesson flies by and already we can see our improvement. Last summer I tried to teach myself using YouTube and I have learned so much more in 3 weeks than I learned all summer. He is upbeat and positive. I would recommend him as a ukulele teacher.

I had my first harmonica lesson with Ronnie and he is awesome! He is very passionate and knowledgeable about music. As a teacher, he is patient and thorough. I appreciate that he was able to simplify concepts for me and took the time to identify my goals. For our first lesson he was intentional about not jumping in too quickly and helping me set realistic expectations for my progress. I left feeling excited to turn this interest into a long-term passion. His communication is great and he is responsive via email and text. I had a change in my schedule for the first lesson. When I reached out to him to ask about changing the time he was understanding and flexible. I felt safe meeting in his home and he has an adorable dog (which is an obvious bonus).

I play and teach both clawhammer and fingerpicking banjo styles. As a performer, I mostly play traditional and contemporary classical music, though I also have performed and recorded quite a bit of folk music on banjo. I enjoy working with clawhammer students as they create their own arrangements of tunes.

About Mark

I am a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter working in a variety of genres. I regularly perform around the Washington, DC, area as a solo guitarist, as a singer/songwriter, and with numerous classical, folk, rock, and musical theater groups. My primary musical influences include folk and

Mark has been a great teacher for this adult beginner! I take lessons in clawhammer banjo and ukulele with him, and his easy-going nature and skill in identifying ways to improve make it a joyful experience! Highly recommend.

Mr. Sylvester is one of the greatest. He is not just an amazing guitarist, but he is also very kind. He treats people with so much respect. He speaks to me and my mom so nicely. He is very patient. He has a deep knowledge of music and knows how to get the most out of even the least talented people (like me!). He doesn't ever get mad if you make a mistake or forget to bring your music notes. We were so lucky to find Mr. Sylvester.

Mark is a talented musician who plays and teaches multiple stringed instruments. His lessons are always informative and supportive. They are driven by the student’s interest, so anything you want o learn— styles of music, how to do a particular technique, music theory— you can bring to class. And every now and then he organizes a recital— terrifying but great practice!

I've played guitar since I was eight years old and various other stringed instruments for several years. I love the banjo sound and played a bit on my original album Heliotropism. I'd love to help novice players get their feet wet with the instrument, strumming and plucking away at their favorite songs.

About Gio

I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums. I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is wh

Adam is great: good teacher, super smart, amazingly talented and knowledgeable, friendly. I would continue with Adam except I am moving out of town. But he got me a good enough start that I am sure I will continue with this instrument."

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
