I started taking music lessons at the age of 9. It began playing in the church and then I taught lessons in my home at the age of 16. I went on to attend and graduate from Christian Heritage College (now called San Diego Christian College) with a Bachelors Degree in Music and Business. I am now the Director of the Music Department at San Diego Young Artists Music Academy. I direct two youth and children choirs, a male chorus and a great adult choir. I also sing with the Voices of Prayze who travel with Jason Mraz from time to time. As a singer, pianist and as a teacher, I specialize in Gospel piano & vocal technique and repertoire. I also have a great deal of experience in Pop, R&B, and Classical so I am able to help students excel in these genres as well.

As your private teacher, I can promise you a very soulful a
nd rewarding experience – having fun is part of my lesson plan. My goal for each student is to build confidence through knowledge and experience. I will encourage each student to reach into their spirit and bring out what is already inside of them through the type of music that brings them happiness. Over the course of my musical career, I have had the opportunity to learn from many musicians. From University Professors to Street Corner Musicians, I have gathered much knowledge on how to play music. Applying that knowledge to my guitar playing has opened up many doors of opportunity and has made my life very interesting. One of my talents is to take complicated ideas and convey them in easy to understand ideas for my students. I now wish to share all my knowledge and experiences with you to enjoy a life of music.
Students of mine have been able to create their own music to record and perform. Ensembles that I have directed have performed at many local venues. I have also invited students to join me at my performances to help them become more confident in their playing.

I have been teaching guitar professionally since 2001 and p
erforming professionally since 1994.

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lesson is custom made to directly benefit each student. The music the student enjoys listening to, is explored to identify what skills are needed to play that music on their instrument. Exercises are then tailored to give students the finger strength and dexterity to directly attain those needed skills.

Favorite songs are also examined to understand the musical theory concepts that were used to create those songs. Once those concepts are understood there is no stopping the student from creating their own music.

Parents and guardians are more than welcome to be part of the process. Involving parents in their children's education is my pleasure. My studio has a comfortable waiting area where you can wait until the lesson is done. Questions are always appreciated.

Two chairs, music, computer, internet, digital recording equipment, guitar, guitar amps, parents can sit in on lesson, bass, ukulele.

I am an experienced, enthusiastic music instructor, who started playing piano around 8 years of age and participated in many musical activities. I received my Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Massachusetts, majoring in Music Education (voice and piano). I have appeared around the world as a soloist singing jazz and pop, including the Blue Note, NYC, and appeared as a guest soloist at the 2000 Southern California Summer Special Olympics. I also participated in ensemble groups such as the Masterworks Chorale in NYC, and the Verdi Opera Chorus of Southern California; and currently I volunteer at the Senior Center leading/accompanying the Sing-Alongs.

Inspired by my love of music, I have been teaching piano and voice for over 25 years from NY to LA and now Orange County. In conjunction with my teaching skills, I have
excellent communication skills, patience and enthusiasm, and work well with children and all ages. I feel that music is an important part of education, and it aids in the development of cognitive and motor skills. And most of all, it is fun and rewarding, and a skill to last a lifetime!

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Amber and working with her today. I was immediately put at ease - Amber made me feel welcome, accepted and was incredibly helpful to me today, as I am auditioning on Sunday to sing as a soloist at my church! I have great exercises to strengthen my diaphragm, and she gave really good instruction regarding how to get the correct sound for each voice range. I am looking forward to meeting with her again, and continuing my studies under Amber.

Amber met me at her door with a smile on her face although I was much too early due to my over active excitement at arriving for my first lesson. Her first words to me were, "I'm so proud of you." That was a complement connected to my age of 83. I could have hugged her. Our lesson consisted of warming up my vocal cords after a long period of not singing. It was noted because of my hearing loss, that I was having trouble pitch wise and this would be something for me to work on besides my breathing. Amber's lesson was exactly what I needed and I can't wait for my next lesson.

Hello! My name is Charlotte, and I am a San Diego vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. I hold a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where I honed my vocal jazz chops before branching out into the East Coast folk, blues and indie rock scene. I moved to Southern California in 2011, when I took a brief hiatus from performing to focus on commercial songwriting and composition and teaching voice, piano and guitar privately. I am currently once again performing in multiple groups in the San Diego area.

Sounds way more serious than it needs to be though it is an important part of any musical education. The basics can be applied to any instrument or vocal study. And it can be fun!

Learning to play music should be fun. Learning to play the songs you like and listen to everyday is a good first step in that direction.

As early as I can remember our house was filled with music. My parents had records of the popular music of the time as well as movie soundtrack albums. At eight years old I got my first trumpet and joined the school band. Soon I was taking private lessons. We also had a piano in the house and I often found myself sitting and trying out chords and melodies to fit the songs I would hear. At sixteen I got my first guitar, along with a songbook that promised I could play “hundreds of songs with just three magic chords”.

Moving west I studied music at West Los Angeles College and played trumpet in the school’s concert band. A group of us formed a jazz quintet and started playing gigs in and aroun
d LA. We then expanded the scope of the band by adding a second sax and more exotic percussion as well as incorporating elements of reggae and rock into our original music. This helped us land jobs at clubs like the Troubadour and larger venues like the Shrine Exhibition Hall. We played together professionally for five years.

After at stint at the Dick Grove School of Music I joined an eight piece cover band playing popular dance music. We toured Western Canada for six months, riding in a converted city bus and taking turns driving a large panel truck with our equipment. When I returned I met a talented female singer who also played flute. We formed a pop/rock quintet and played professionally in the LA area for several years.

I’ve continued to take lessons along the way and have taught trumpet, piano and guitar to both young people and adults. I believe my rich musical journey and my experiences both teaching and performing can help you to achieve your musical goals!

*** Lesson Details ***
Listening to music is fun. Playing music is fun. Learning to play a musical instrument should be just as much fun. The first step toward a solid musical education is to find out what type of music the student likes and what particular musician or artist he or she enjoys. From there we can choose material that the student will have fun performing as they learn.

Each session will involve a brief review of previous material covered and a preview of ideas to work on going forward. In between, the student and I will play together and discuss how best we can each improve, and have a little fun along the way!!

I will work with a variety of methods and concepts customized to fit each student. My experience has shown me that no two students are alike, but every student will enjoy playing more, and more often, if they like the study material.

Xiaole, (Shirley) an active pianist, music teacher, and composer, is a member of MTAC-Music Teachers Association California. A member of Pi Kappa Lambda Honor Society, she holds a PhD in Music with many awards for academic excellence from the University of Hawaii. She has more than 30 years teaching experience and has taught piano, music theory and history from beginner to advanced levels.

She studied at Shanghai Conservatory of Music and at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, where she polished her artistic spectrum in piano, musicology, and composition. Her teaching uses various sources, including Western classical repertoire, folk, popular music, world music, and Chinese music. She performed piano solo and chamber music in China when she was a pianist in Liaoning Provincial Opera House and on the piano faculty at Sichuan
Conservatory of Music, China. She taught piano major students and played accompaniment for voice, dance and various instruments.

Currently she teaches piano and composition in her studios in Irvine, CA and serves as Chair of Senior Graduation Recital in MTAC South Coast Branch. Her students have been prizewinners in MTAC branch festivals, honor recitals, and have performed in Composers Today recitals. She has helped students develop interest and much enjoyment in music. She also can help students enter prestigious universities and become professional musicians.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are designed for individual needs and goals. Each lesson can be in flexible ways to meet the student's needs.

For example, for a beginner student, a lesson introduces the basic ideas of hand position, body posture, game-like rhythm drills and simple song-like pieces.

For elementary and intermediate students, lessons start from warm up techniques. Then they play carefully selected pieces according to the student's interest. The favorite pieces may be Christmas Carols, Kuhlau's Sonatinas and Beethoven's Fur Elise. Advanced students learn to play Mozart and Beethoven Sonatas, and Chopin's Waltz and Polonaises. Some students learn to compose their music while applying music theory elements.
Some students like to learn pieces for their school events or community events (church hymns) or download pieces from internet. The teacher is willing to help students play many pieces to enrich their music life.

Ms. Shirley has been teaching my two kids (daughter 9 & son 7) for almost 2 years now. She is very dedicated and passionate about music. She challenges my children to try hard and learn good habits. She is flexible in how she approaches both of their lessons given my daughter applies more focus and discipline to her piano than my son. She tries to find ways to keep my son encouraged and interested in learning. She is very accommodating at her home and gives my children space to do their homework. I am very pleased with Ms. Shirley's knowledge, capability and dedication to teaching piano. She is a wonderful teacher.

Ms. Shirley is fantastic. She is very understanding and a combinations. My son LOVES going to his piano lesson every week. She requires he work hard and pay attention. She really works hard to find good things he does and really reinforces the positive. She is always accommodating to schedule changes as well. We love having her as a teacher.

I have taken lessons with Xiaole for over 5 years now. She helps me to plan long term goals and to strive to play the best I can in performances and competitions. Also, she stresses forming good habits for studying for theory and practicing at home. One thing to note is that she is pretty strict. I began playing violin 20 years ago and love sharing musical education with others. I continue to study privately and currently perform with a college symphony orchestra. I am a registered Suzuki instructor through the Suzuki Association of the Americas and combine it with traditional methods to best accommodate every student. I am also happy to assist with school or orchestra music, as well as preparation for festivals and auditions. Lara is very easy going and friendly. She makes you feel comfortable right away so it doesn't feel awkward to ask lots of questions if you're a beginner. We've only attended the first lesson but I think it's safe to say we will be sticking with her and would recommend her as an instructor.

I have taken lessons with Ronald since I was 6, I am now 23. In my 17 years of taking lessons I have learned to play piano, sing and am proficient in music theory. In the more recent years I have even had the opportunity to teach music through Ronald. Throughout the years, I have experienced and witnessed the patience and kindness Ronald consistently shows his students. He encourages his students to become better and shares in their enthusiasm due to their accomplishments. Ronald genuinely cares about his students and is dedicated to making sure his students improve. I fully recommend Ronald for students who have parents who want to be involved in the learning process and especially for young children who are just starting out. Ronald works well with families, includes parents every step of the way and is very patient with young students helping them learn in an open and encouraging environment.

Mr.Chaz is really dedicated to his profession. He started to teach my seven year old son over one year ago and he has motivated him to sing his best and he started piano with him last year which has been a phenomenal experience for my son. Chaz really focuses on the detail, theory and groundwork necessary to excel in music. If you are lucky enough to get your child started with him you will never regret the experience. My background in music theory makes me capable of tutoring students in a wide range of music theory subjects. Through my extensive studies, I have learned about music theory and its history dating back to the Renaissance era (c. 1400s). My Music Theory Minor from Northwestern University has given me the opportunity to study music theory in many different contexts beginning with simple Roman numeral chord analysis and delving as deep as composing small four-voice fugues. A student who studies theory with me can expect to become an expert at music analysis, beginning with species counterpoint and continuing from there based on the student's subject interests. I am able to personalize the learning materials of each of my students by using different musical examples that I have studied over the fourteen theory courses I have taken so far. I took the AP Music Theory class in high school and received a 5 on the exam and am also able to help tutor students who wish to pass the test.

Rachel is a fantastic teacher and tutor. Her expansive knowledge of music theory and ear training contributes to her vast musical ability. Not only is she a great performer, but she is able to break down the music and explain it in a variety of ways in order to effectively teach students at any level. Most importantly, Rachel is an advocate for students expressing their own musical voice. She will not tell a student exactly how to play a given piece, but rather she will teach them the necessary tools for the student to play well, and allow them to explore their own musical interpretation from there.

Outside of music, Rachel is a genuine and kind-hearted person. She is understanding and empathetic, and this carries over into her teaching as well. That being said, Rachel holds herself and her students to high standards. Students will hear improvement in their tone, technique, and musicality as they work with Rachel. I give her my highest recommendation for all subjects.

About Stephanie
Hello, I'm Stephanie! I teach beginning to advanced voice lessons and beginning to intermediate piano. I have students of all ages and love helping them on their musical journeys. Whether you are just starting out or want to reconnect to your musical interests, I am here to help!

I am an accomplished vocalist with experience in an array of musical genres including opera, musical theater, jazz, art songs, oratorios, masses, and cross-overs. I sing at weddings and special events throughout Southern California, serve as the soprano section leader at Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano, and am a member of several choirs and a cappella groups.

As a veteran vocal coach, I have trained singers from 5 to 60 years of age. There is always something new to be learned and I help my students discover and unlock their talent. The voice is foster
ed through the use of vocal exercises and learning proper technique. I find that beginning piano lessons are excellent for those too young to begin studying voice or those that want to supplement their vocal studies.

Stephanie is a great vocal instructor. To start, she has an amazing voice herself, and she instantly puts you at ease where you can trust her. I keep learning more and more about my voice and how to use it, and I appreciate that she customizes her teaching method to my very inquisitive learning style, explaining all the technical aspects that help me understand what I'm doing. I only have great praise for Stephanie.

Stephanie is absolutely amazing with my daughter. She is patient and very sweet teaching Maddy how to play her first songs. Maddy looks forward to every lesson.
