Gaw is a voice artist and music teacher. She has been performing for 20 years and has been teaching music over 10 years. She received her B.M. in Jazz Studies and her Master in Voice Performance at California State University of Sacramento.
Gaw is a positive, personable, and enthusiastic teacher. She is a currently the director of the Sacramento State School of Music vocal jazz ensembles and the jazz voice applied instructor. She is also currently the director of the Christian Brothers High School vocal jazz ensemble and is an active private music instructor. Gaw has been working for several years as a vocal clinician, working with many middle school, high school and collegiate ensembles and served as an adjudicator for many music festivals.

In addition to preparing for performances and auditions, I encourage spending time on your favorite songs, and enjoy learning with them with you (often by transcribing the material).

As an adult learner who plays multiple instruments, I’ve had every type of teacher you can imagine. It’s always a struggle to find a teacher able to work with the unique requirements of being an adult with adult obligations and time constraints.
Tom, as it turns out, is that rare teacher able to not just handle these unique requirements, but is also fantastic at finding and focusing on knowledge gaps, whether it be playing, theory, tone, or anything else I throw at him.
Prior to taking lessons with Tom, I had barely held a trumpet, and I’m progressing at a rate far faster than I had imagined I would.

I've been performing professionally in the Sacramento area in every conceivable context, while maintaining a private studio, for over a decade.
I'm a life-long musician with a passion for the art and a love of teaching it. In 2012, I graduated from Sacramento State with a Bachelors in Music. Through my schooling and personal study, I have become a well-rounded musician able to teach many instruments effectively. Making music with others at a high level, teaching, and having the opportunity to perform professionally around the Sacramento area has been a great experience. I look forward to continuing that journey, growing as a person and musician, and being a positive role-model for others!
I've been playing trumpet nearly my entire life, and studied it in college. However, I am a multi-instrumentalist and currently teach trumpet, guitar, piano, and trombone. I specialize in classical style, but can also teach jazz theory, correct swing style, articulation, etc. I have
studied with multiple music professors and have learned their most effective teaching methods. I have taken music theory classes that allow me to explain theory in a simplified manner to students. I have been playing guitar since high school and have taken many piano classes while in school, where proficiency is necessary in order to advance in the major. In my free time, I even play drums and multiple other instruments and listen to music constantly. Music is very much my life. This allows me the versatility to teach a variety of instruments and mold myself and my students into well-rounded musicians.
Colin has been a fantastic teacher for my 12-year old son, who is learning his first instrument. Colin is kind, friendly, personable, and easy-going. He keeps the lessons fresh and fun. My son has made a very nice connection with Colin and really enjoys his lessons.

It's pretty terrifying to try a new instrument, especially one like the trumpet--which is so loud and obvious if you're wrong! Colin was supportive and warm and encouraging, and kept me at ease and willing to keep trying. He seems knowledgeable in alot of areas of music too, which is an added bonus. Highly recommend!

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. gside a song you love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun. Music lessons include:
1. Building a really strong foundation so it's easy to interpret or understand any part, and to play it with the right amount of practice.
2. Learning to sight-read music, so you can play it well as soon as possible.
3. Learning how to improvise (make-up) music, learn music by ear, and to understand and create chords, which lets you play music in different ways.
4. Play different styles from classical to jazz to popular music.
5. Learning how to practice efficiently so you can learn music as fast as possible.
6. Composing our own original music.
Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.
It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.
I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.
Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.
Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.
We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!
The first lesson was successful. My particular background in piano is unique, and my needs are atypical as well. I thought Thomas assessed my abilities, lack of abilities, and goals well and quickly. He started me on a different perspective on looking at music (reading the staff) that seems very helpful. I'm encouraged.
I am a professional full time Trombonist. At the same time, teaching has always been a big part of who I am - I love teaching. My music career has taken me around the world and back but more than that it has given me a wonderful tool of self expression, and for that I am forever grateful. My band performs regularly in Opera houses as well as coffee houses... Other than the Trombone I do play the Trumpet as well, and I have over 8 years of Piano under my belt. Trumpet lessons with Arias are always tailored to the individual student and that student's needs in order to facilitate maximum growth as a trumpet player and musician. Arias believes in an individualized approach, meeting the student where he/she is and moving forward through the developmental process, beginning with a strong base of fundamentals and an ever-present focus on musicality, expression, and exploration as an artist. Arias works to foster a positive learning environment where the student can learn and develop a positive self-image and confidence, while working to create a strong base of fundamentals and good playing habits to then transfer to musical settings.
Arias is both an avid performer and educator of the trumpet. She is currently a member of the Brass Band of Appalachia based out of Bristol, VA. She recently performed at the 2017 William Adam International Trumpet Festival; the International Trumpet Guild Conference 2017 in Hershey, PA as part of a Prelude Ensemble for Mr. Phil Snedecor; and was featured as a soloist with the Appalachian State University Concert Band in April 2017. Other performance highlights include appearances with the Cave Run Symphony Orchestra, the Brass band of the Tri-State, and the Portsmouth Wind Symphony; as well as performances of Sweeney Todd, The Magic Flute, The Music Man, Bye Bye Birdie, Suessical the Musical, and Cinderella. Arias has competed in competitions including the National Trumpet Competition, the McCauley Chamber Music Competition, and the A.
Frank and Bethel C. Gallaher Memorial Solo Competition.
As an educator, Arias is committed to the success of all students through individually tailored instruction to promote the growth and development of the student as a person through music. Arias recently served as the Graduate Teaching Assistant to Dr. James Stokes at the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University and was previously the trumpet teacher for George Rogers Clarke High School in Winchester, KY; a counselor for the Morehead State University Summer Arts Academy; and an instructor for the West Union Performing Arts Camp. As a private lesson teacher, she has worked with trumpet students in the southern Ohio, central Kentucky, and western North Carolina areas. These students include a semi-finalist in the junior solo division at the National Trumpet Competition and several students that are now pursuing music as a career.
A native of West Union, Ohio, Arias grew up on a farm in the Ohio Valley where she spent her days either playing the trumpet for her adoring audience (her animals) or out adventuring on the farm with her horses, goats, dogs, and cats. When not playing the trumpet, she enjoys mountain biking, hiking, reading, and adventuring. Arias completed her undergraduate studies in music education at Morehead State University where she studied with Mr. Greg Wing; and recently completed her graduate studies in music performance at Appalachian State University where she studied with Dr. James Stokes.

It is Rapturous for me when a student realizes their own musicality by going past just playing the notes on the page, to actively expressing the Message (which could be a Thought, Emotion, or a Scene) that is inherent in the piece.
In a Brass instrument lesson, I have the student play: -A quick and effective warm-up with me. -A quick review of their assigned technical exercises. -Their assigned Etude or Chart or Solo. -A Duet with Me.

I wish for my students to become more than just good instrumentalists, I want for them to always have fun with music. When a student realizes that music can ultimately be Emotional and Creative Outlet for them, they will be Musicians for life!
I am a Bass Trombonist, but teach all brass instruments. I have been teaching for 20 years. I help my students build their Tone, Technique and Articulation by teaching a simple Warm-Up routine. I have written an 8-page eBook entitled "Optimal Brass Playing" that describes ten areas of best practices in Brass playing. Each of my students receives one of these. I also heavily emphasize instruction on Sight Reading. In fact, I have recently written a book on the subject that I will soon publish entitled "Page to Performance". As a Composer, I have also written Duet parts to all 65 Introductory Melodious Etudes that were fist compiled by Alan Raph. I use these Duets in lessons to help my students strengthen their Listening Awareness skills.
Mr. Scott really is a nice person to meet. For my first voice lessons, He helped me identify what range I was comfortable with and introduced a few of his works that opened my perspective on reading music. He knows how to teach his material if you specify what exactly you want to accomplish.

Scott is someone who expertly emphasizes both the fundamentals of trombone playing and musicianship. I have had the opportunity to read his melodious etudes arrangements with him and his arrangements are expertly crafted to force the performers to work on listening, phrasing, intonation and sound quality all in one fell swoop. Scott's attitude is very warm and not condescending in the slightest. He is very positive while always encouraging the player to grow.
