My own syllabus covers basic theory as well as an introduction to composing your own musical pieces.

About Marsha
The Recital was fabulous- thanks for all your work.

Goals: Since I am also a Life Coach, we really focus on how to accomplish our hopes and desires. We begin by weekly, then monthly and even a yearly goal.

Each week we also focus on something in my STUDENT PAL - mnemonic. Another is TECHNIQUE. Technique is the ability to have proper position, wrist-lifts and finger curve as well as Theoretic knowledge and application.

I started giving out lickable gold stars, you know, the old-fashioned kind? They are for those students who mark their lesson sheet and come prepared... They really seem to enjoy that, and I adore the nostalgia!

It is a great week when students are nearly all prepared and ready for their lessons. This makes both Coach and student more effective and the time together more enjoyable.

Perhaps you are reading
this with both a little excitement and a little concern. Finding the right person for your or your student can be intimidating. A short introduction follows so that you know a little about me and my philosophy which can assist you make an informed decision. If we are a good fit, lessons and learning progress more joyfully.

I have been teaching music, performing music and enjoying music since I was a tiny three-year old. My first piano lessons were at age seven. I have since taught the students of former students! How fun is that?

Music has blessed my life in countless ways and given me opportunities I'd never dreamed of. Teaching at the Young Artists Conservatory of Music; Singing in Carnegie Hall, Performing across Europe and teaching the best students for over 25 years has been a delight.

I believe strongly that those who spend their time and resources for musical education are some of the brightest and most intelligent people around. Each of my students have their own individual goals and reasons for taking music lessons, which we revisit monthly. I believe that my role is to be a support and tool for them/you to accomplish the goals set, working with music that delights and educates.

You want the best teacher, who offers information, example, practice and performance opportunities and then gets out of the way of the student's own "voice" (whether playing or singing) so that they can be free to create their own style.

*** Lesson Details ***
In our lessons, we work with a predictable schedule of balance. We have weekly exercises to make strong fingers and or voices, and technique and theory practice to hone skills that will improve our performances, whether they are for others or for our own benefit. Each student of piano can learn how to create and write their own music in time, choose their own pieces to work on, and have a say in their classical and performance goals.

We have a program of advancement, so you and your loved ones can visually see your progress and measure your skills, complete with awards and trophies.

What you learn, has everything to do with your commitment. Practice doesn't make perfect, Practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect.

Learning the piano ought to be a JOY. I believe in playing the piano, not 'practicing' it. Enjoy what you do, and you'll do it longer and with celebration instead of duty.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano - upright; CD player; Music stands; Dozens of music books and lesson materials; flash cards; computer and music writing program; mic and mirror, syllabus.

*** Travel Equipment ***
No travel.

*** Specialties ***
Over the years I have dabbled in most methods, but finally come to use my own syllabus and musicianship. I can easily adapt to your favourite if that is your desire. I specialize in a total music education, not merely in learning notes. It is like looking in a mirror and only seeing eyes and skin. Music has many facets and we discover all of them.

About David
I have been a working musician and occasional private music teacher for over 40 years. During that time I had a career in the professional audio and video industry, during which I learned how to successfully deal with people. I recently returned to school and completed a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree at CSU Sacramento. My goal is to bring excitement and enthusiasm for music and playing an instrument to my students, and to create musicians who will make and enjoy music throughout their lives. I play guitar, bass guitar and flute, and enjoy teaching all of them to all age groups.

*** Lesson Details ***
Playing music is supposed to be fun. Lessons include playing, so they should be fun as well. My lessons are both focused and fun. I believe you get out of music what you put in. If a student doesn't practice in between lesso
ns, I will know. If a student does practice, I will know that as well. My lessons stress not only what to practice, but how. In 3-6 months, the beginning student can expect to be able to make a pleasing sound on the instrument, and be able to play beginning repertoire. Most importantly, the student will be able to play well enough to enjoy the instrument, which inevitably leads to more productive practice and continued improvement. This continued improvement is what lessons are all about.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If I travel to a student's home, I will bring my instrument only. I expect the student to provide all other equipment necessary for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
Folk guitar, rock and roll and blues bass, classical flute, analog and digital recording, music theory

Ever wonder why theory is important? A lot of people don't want to learn theory or are scared of it. If this is you, I'll explain how to navigate music without using theory while also showing how theory can be a helpful tool. If you're here to learn more about theory because you need to or you're interested in learning more about it, some of the topics I'll cover are listen below.

Tailored to your skill level, you'll learn:
-high vs low notes
-ascending vs descending
-sharps, flats, and naturals
-key signatures
-time signatures
-major vs minor
-other modes
-rhythm and melody
-transcriptions
-form
-chord recognition
-intervals
-harmonies
-transposition
-much more!

My teaching style is casual, yet theoretical. I'm easy going, but also passionate. I tailor my style and difficulty to match each individual student.

If you have any questions or want to meet in person to see if it's a good fit, let me know! :)

Alex

About Alex
MUSIC: My first private lessons were on piano at 8 years of age with piano lessons, I learned about he basic fundamentals of music (scales, melodies, harmonies, rhythm, time and key signatures, accidentals, etc.). After discovering that rhythms were the most interesting to me, I decided to start drum lessons and fell in love with it. After taking private lessons and mastering my craft, new doors were opened: wedding gigs, an amazing high school band experience, and even performances in Spain and New York. I started teaching in 2012 and developed the comfort to share what I've learned over the years. If the student is willing to work hard, I can provide the knowledge and wisdom to help the student improve. TUTORING: I've always been strong in math- and science-type classes. I'm a Mechanical Engineering major at CSUS. I've received high gra
des in all of my math classes, and I have experience working with people of all ages.

I am a professional musician with a bachelor’s degree in music. My background in jazz improv has given me a very strong foundation on harmony and tonality, and it is my goal to help students develop a strong foundation as well. I believe in a combined approach of theory and ear training, so that students can apply what they learn to real life musical experiences.

About Luis
I am a professional musician with a bachelor's degree in music from the Sacramento State School of Music. I have played saxophone throughout the region in many different groups, such as the award winning Sacramento State Jazz Ensemble. I have training in both classical and jazz styles. As a former "band kid," I am familiar with the ins and outs of playing in all kinds of school bands such as marching band, concert band, and jazz band.
As a teacher, I like to teach good habits as well as musicianship. My goal is to help students become better players and musicians, so that they have the skills necessary to take on new musical endeavors. I also have experience in bilingual tutoring for K-12 students. This also means I have passed background checks for the state and school districts.
