Key signatures, time signatures, complex rhythms, counterpoint, and chord progressions! Music theory is essential for any kind of musician and is one of my favorite subjects to teach. After a short amount of time, you will be able to use our music theory knowledge to do a bit of composing!

About Christoffer
Perform - Create - Build a solid foundation in music while gaining confidence, leadership, and flexibility.

*** NEW POLICIES ***
I'm currently only taking students that can commit to weekly lessons. I no longer allow 24-hr cancellations, which is a policy Takelessons promotes, but I don't find it useful for the teacher or the student. If you'll be out of town, I allow 4 cancellations per year. I also take off these dates: July 4, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, and December 24 - January 1. If you need to reschedule for another reason, I will try to find another time during that week for your lesson, but if it's an exceptionally busy week I may not be able to find a time-slot. You will still be obligated to pay for the lesson.

*** Bio ***
I have an MFA in Music Composition and Piano Performance from California Institute of the Arts and
a BA in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara. I began piano at the age of 7 and composition at age 15. Teaching has always been important to me. I started providing lessons in high school and learned that giving musical knowledge is just as important as acquiring the skills it takes to be a musician. Studying with me will help you become a well-rounded musician with the ability to play the type of music you want to play.

Constantly composing, film scoring, and performing, I'm a very active musician that works with classical musicians, rock musicians, and everything in between. I teach a variety of instruments and will cater lessons to your styles and interests. I'm also a recording artist and work with music software such as Ableton Live, Native Instruments, and Sibelius. I would love to teach you how to compose and record your own music in whichever genre you prefer.

*** Lesson Details ***
Many of my students have studied music in the past, but weren't able to keep the passion. I pride myself as a very enthusiastic teacher that works hard at making lessons fun and interesting for any age and background. All of my students (from 3 years old to 60 years old) enjoy music and practice very hard. You will be provided with a solid foundation in theory, aural skills, technique, and creativity, giving you the ability to carve your own path in music. You will learn the correct way to play your instrument and develop the intuition to command it expressively.

I've been studying ukulele with Chris for a year and a half now. I went from absolutely no background in music to really being able to play the instrument pretty quickly. Chris has the patience of Job and a real ability to explain music and playing technique in a way that is incredibly easy to understand. I learn something new every week and he can teach as quickly or as slowly as I want to learn that week. If he can teach me to play, he can teach you to play!

He has the best sets of vocal exercise which can relax your voice, build your resonance, and help you hit your notes accurately in your range. Very very happy to have him teaching me.

About Matthew
Music has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, when my father would record my brother and I singing. I always loved singing and learned many of my favorite songs as a child.

I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, which has led me all the way to receiving my degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education! I was lucky enough to attend one of the nation's top music schools, The Peabody Institute, and I now work toward my Master's degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have enjoyed performing in everything from big-band-lead to principal trumpet in the orchestra, leading brass quintets and brass ensembles, and much more! The trumpet has been a huge passion for as long as I can remember now!

While I was learning songs as a child, I decided I wanted to join a band! Now here we are 10 years later and
I've have the fortune of performing as a lead singer in bands across the country, and let me tell you there is no bigger thrill than getting in-front of a crowd full of cheering fans, performing music you love.

I've also been playing the guitar for just under 10 years. Playing the guitar has been both a complete joy, but also a fantastic learning experience. I have been learning songs of my favorite artists and even written my own material, and having the opportunity to immerse myself in my favorite music and create music of my own has taught me so much more about music and being a musician. I hope to impart this experience onto all of my students.

Whether it's trumpet, voice, or guitar, I love all things music and my #1 objective is to for my students to learn how it feels to experience what music REALLY has to offer, so to you reading this, let's make some noise!

*** Lesson Details ***
For starters, understand that you're going to have a blast! Within months of working together, I'll have you playing your favorite songs, or feeling prepared for that upcoming audition. I remember what it was like to have second thoughts about auditioning and performance, and I'll make sure those thoughts are a thing of the past for you!

During our lessons, I enjoy addressing the material you have to work on, whether in school or just for your own enjoyment. At the same time, I will present music and materials of my own, and I encourage you to do the same!

I have always enjoyed learning from my students as they have learned from myself, and I could only hope to express how rewarding it is when I see a student of mine progress from week to week and achieve their own goals.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, you can be guaranteed we'll make steady progress and we will achieve your goals. Get ready to wow your friends and family!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Metronome
Post-it Notes
Music Stand(s)
Chairs
Computer/Internet
Keyboard
Guitar(s)

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would provide utilities including music stand, metronome, some external source of pitch.

I expect the student to bring any and all assigned music/material they wish to work on. The student will also begin the lesson prepared with basic necessities, including a pencil (please, no pens) and all music assigned from prior lesson (if this is a first-lesson, bring any/all music you currently have and/or are working on). Vocal students will bring a bottle of water. Trumpet students will have their own valve oil and mouthpiece (if not originally included with your horn).

*** Specialties ***
Trumpet methods include (not limited to) Arban's, Clarke, Sachs, Rubank, Getchell, Adam, Schlossberg, Colin, Bai Lin.

For instruments outside the trumpet, methods will address school curriculum, unless student has advanced beyond provided materials.

I strongly encourage students of voice, guitar, and piano to pick material of their choosing.

Classical and rock are the genres to which I am most attracted

I've been taking lessons with Matt for about 2 months now. Right away it was a very comfortable environment and vibe, which is important, especially as a beginning, aspiring singer. Takes the lessons slow and easy going at first, then jumps into exercises and focuses on directly what style the student is interested in. Very awesome dude, would definitely recommend! Thanks Matt!

Highly focused on drum & rhythmic theory...specializing in odd meters

About Brian
I'm a 31 year old professional musician who has been playing drums and percussion for the last 17 years. I've taught for a respected music studio in Connecticut and I continue to teach here in Los Angeles. I have played in numerous bands and toured the United States, Europe and Central America. The styles I teach are Rock, Jazz, Latin, R&B/Hip-Hop, Funk/Soul, Reggae, Folk/Indie, Metal/Hardcore and World Rhythms.

I teach drum-set and various types of hand percussion such as bongos, djembe, darbuka/doumbek and congas.

*** Lesson Details ***
I've always thought that learning should be fun. I consistently try to bring a creative and laid-back approach to teaching drums. After the first lesson most students realize that I don't take myself too seriously. Sometimes certain techniques or exercises can be tiresome or even boring. When this
occurs, I switch gears and move on to something else. In my opinion, if a student is getting very frustrated it is generally best to relax and try a different exercise or beat. If we can't enjoy ourselves then what is the point?!

*** Equipment ***
I expect a student to have at least a pair of sticks and a pad. Eventually they will need a metronome for practicing and if they are serious a drum-set at some point. If you'd like to learn hand percussion I recommend having a hand drum of some kind.

*** Specialties ***
The styles I teach are Rock, Jazz, Latin, R&B/Hip-Hop, Funk/Soul, Reggae, Folk/Indie, Metal/Hardcore and World Rhythms. I teach from the heart and develop a natural feel for my students. I also use multiple books mixed into my teaching.

I was inspired to start lessons from watching the last season of American Idol. I started with a 12 pack of online lessons. I was so nervous to sing out load (even in the privacy of my home) but Melody was always positive and encouraging. Even though I didn't practice as much as I should, to my surprise I've gotten better at hitting notes. It's helped even at work (female engineer) for me to easily speak louder and lower when needed. I've been taking lessongs for over a year now and it's still challenging but I always feel awesome afterwards (just like a great workout!) When I listen to singers now I have a whole level of of appreciation. It's like Melody introduced a new language. She's an awesome singer herself and I aspire to sing like her!

In my home country of Russia children start learning Music Theory from a very young age. I used to struggle with many concepts of music theory until one of my friends explained it to me. I love to share the knowledge that my friend and my teachers shared with me. I think Music Theory can be extremely exciting and captivating if you teach it right. My personal journey helped me find easier ways to explain these concepts to others.

About Artem
Hello! My name is Artem and I'm 24 years old. I'm a freelance musician, composer and pedagogue.
I am passionate about teaching because I believe education and willingness to learn is an extremely important factor for personal development and success.
I was born and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia and underwent intensive training in voice, violin, composition and piano. After winning the Frieburg Intenational Violin Competition in 2010, I was offered a full scholarship to study music at Dalhousie University at the age of sixteen. After moving to Canada I went through a 9-month intensive english learning program, so I know first hand how difficult it can be to learn a new language. This experience helped me understand the struggles that any ESL student goes through and discover new ways to teach my first language to others.
I am exci
ted to get to know you and share my knowledge with you!

Russian is his native language, but you would never have guessed it since his English is impeccable. He takes difficult concepts and makes them simple to understand. He walks with you each step of the way, meeting you at your level and guiding you to fluency. He understands the best way you learn and adapts to your learning needs and situation. Artem will help you attain native pronunciation and will go out of his way to provide extra help and materials. I've been amazed how much I have gained from lessons with him. Highly recommended. Deep conversations about how music is connected, and how the little pieces of information (triads, scales, etc.) lead to the bigger picture. While of course putting the concepts to work in your practice routine

About Chris
I am a jazz guitarist based out of beautiful Los Angeles, California. I received and Associate of Arts degree in Music in 2015, and have been pursuing a bachelors in Jazz Studies since then.

While in community college I really grew into my own as a musician and discovered that I love jazz. Not only the music, but the history of how it formed as well as the differences from classical music. When at school I stood out from the other guitarists because I was hungry to learn and that attitude will hopefully follow me for the rest of my life.

Thats what I'd hope to pass on the students; that knowledge, be it music, english, math, physiology, etc. is the key to everything. And that it doesn't have to be all stuffy and boring! I tailor my lessons to the student whether its guitar, piano, ukulele, etc. and my main objective is to learn and
have fun, so the learning is reinforced with good natured thoughts. This will set up the student to actually want to practice!

As a musician I've been in a couple of groups, and starting to get a jazz group together recently. I also try to utilize the computer to produce when possible so I can learn about that aspect of music. My passion is improvisation/composition, because I hope to one day leave songs behind that people can play forever and be influenced by them like so many have influenced me.

And Christopher always comes out after the lesson and gives me a little update which matters to me as a mom. I also appreciate how he doesn't just boot him out the door at the end of the lesson. AND my son is actually talking about music! Definitely learning more than just some chords. Good instructor who obviously loves and respects music. :)

I'm composer, piano player and vocalist. Through my studies for Composition for Film and TV at Berklee Valencia, and conservatory education, I can create a fun and practical class for Music Theory!

About Belen
I'm a music composer/songwriter originally from Ecuador, who is also a life-long ice figure skater. I graduated with a masters degree from Berklee College of Music Valencia, in the Scoring for Film & TV program. I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Contemporary Music back in Ecuador, as well I I studied piano and Portuguese (as part of my love for Brazilian Popular Music).

I'm teaching again because I'd love to contribute with my skills and connect with new people in their learning experience.

Ice skating taught me discipline, patience and perseverance in life. As I my body reached injuries from years of skating, I'm not training anymore, I hope to translate my passion for this sport through teaching and supporting other skaters. All ages welcome!

My love for songwriting and singing is combined with languages. In our language cl
asses we will learn from culture, history and research of the customs of different south American countries. We can also develop project that involve learning songs in Spanish (and/or Portuguese). We can also practice a lot of conversation about your favorite topics!

Belen is patient, skilled, and friendly. She makes the class fun and practical. It’s an added bonus that she can explain musical concepts to me in both English and Spanish.

Our boy Finn is beginning 5th grade and needs to continue practicing his Spanish with a native speaker. Belen was great with him and he's looking forward to his weekly sessions.
