After graduating from Salford University, England with a Bachelors degree (Honors) in Music and Composing I worked for a short time as a commercial "jingle" writer, before moving to San Diego, marrying my dream girl, and opening my own music recording, teaching and production studio. From there I have been teaching lessons, recording bands and writing music for independent film ad video games for the last 6 years. Throughout this time I've been continually performing live in venues all over California.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach both from a privately rented studio in Santee and from my home studio in La Mesa. Both are fully equipped for guitar, bass and drum lessons and even have recording facilities! In my lesson plans I try to combine theory and technique with practical application (that is, playing music and rocking out!).

A typical lesson begins with a warm up and review of last weeks' lesson, and then moves to a new concept or technique. Once this new idea is understood, we give it a practical application by using it a song the student is familiar with. We finish up by setting some homework and answering any questions the student my have.

My lessons are structured and goal orientated (I want my students playing songs they love as soon as possible to keep the inspiration and excitement going!) but I adapt each lesson plan to suit the student, accommodating different musical tastes and learning styles. Most important I keep the lessons fun and engaging - it's the best way to learn!

On the way home, my grand daughter told me she liked Mr. Dave, had a lot of fun and can't wait for next week's lesson.

Great teacher! I learn so much more in my lessons with David than I think I ever would anywhere else. He is very patient and breaks down music theory so it is easy to understand. Bass is tricky for me and he helps me understand my place more and provides context. He also instills a lot of confidence in my abilities and gives great feedback. And he's a lot of fun!

I started taking music lessons at the age of 9. It began playing in the church and then I taught lessons in my home at the age of 16. I went on to attend and graduate from Christian Heritage College (now called San Diego Christian College) with a Bachelors Degree in Music and Business. I am now the Director of the Music Department at San Diego Young Artists Music Academy. I direct two youth and children choirs, a male chorus and a great adult choir. I also sing with the Voices of Prayze who travel with Jason Mraz from time to time. As a singer, pianist and as a teacher, I specialize in Gospel piano & vocal technique and repertoire. I also have a great deal of experience in Pop, R&B, and Classical so I am able to help students excel in these genres as well.

It was great! We determined the lowest I could sing as well as about the highest I can sing. She found a good key for my voice, showed me some breathing techniques and picked out another middle range song for me to sing! Can't wait for the next lesson!!

Music theory lessons focus on learning to read music notation. There are written portions and ear training portions in each lesson. Use of the piano helps the student to transfer their knowledge to an instrument. The student does not need to have a piano at home; there are many apps out there that can be helpful with practice at home.

These lessons are ideal for students who can already read well. Any young students may find it more beneficial to start music theory by taking instrumental lessons like piano or violin instead of plain music theory lessons.

During the past 17 years, Stacey has worked with students ranging from age 5 to 75 teaching classical, musical theater, Christian, and pop music. She accepts students of all ages, styles, and levels. Her students learn through vocal exercises, ear training, song, and performance techniques. Students also learn how to keep their voices healthy and are encouraged to participate in performing venues outside of lessons.

After teaching in New York and Ohio, Stacey held a teaching position at American River College and operated her private voice studio in Sacramento, California for 6 years. She recently relocated to San Diego where she maintains her private voice studio. Stacey has a Master of Music in Vocal Performance/Pedagogy from Ohio University, and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from SUNY Fredonia. Most recently, she c
ompleted the Summer Vocology Institute where she worked with several of the most knowledgeable researchers and therapists in the field of voice and completed additional Speech Pathology-related courses at the University of Pittsburgh. A classically trained musician, Stacey performed locally in Sacramento as a soloist and sang first soprano with the Sacramento Master Singers. Her roles include Despina from Mozart'€™s 'Cosi fan tutte' and Nancy in Britten'€™s 'Albert Herring'. She performed 3 degree recitals and was a 1998-99 Concerto Competition Winner at SUNY Fredonia.

I find it very important for my students to be comfortable and to enjoy their lessons. Our first lesson will include getting to know your comfort level and all the details of your voice. We will sing a lot of vocal exercises, find out what you already know, and set basic goals. For a normal lesson, I always start with vocal exercises and progress into our song literature.

I am an energetic instructor and love what I do. Everything I teach is based on solid, healthy vocal technique. I apply this classical technique to all styles of singing from musical theater to pop and of course classical. Sometimes I will assign you a song, but usually I give you a choice between 2 or 3. I always encourage you to bring in your own song choices as options!

Students always ask how quickly they will progress. The answer is...it's completely individual. If you strive for a reasonable goal and practice efficiently generally you will progress nicely.

Stacey has been training my daughter for over 6 years! It's hard to believe these lessons are coming to an end, but not because Stacey isn't amazing, but because my daughter is graduating and moving away! I just want to thank Stacey for helping my daughter at the age of 11 how to sing through being terrified! She has come a long way and she has enjoyed all her time with Miss Stacey! I have recommended Stacey and will continue to recommend her not just for her talent, but because of her patience and her kind heart too!

I love being a teacher, but even more than just that, I thoroughly enjoy assisting others on their journey to learning and making music a personal experience for themselves.

Having said that, here is my teaching philosophy, including what you can expect from me as a teacher and as an individual:

PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

Each student who comes to me is an individual. I customize each lesson, keeping in mind the student’s level of interest, goals, and intent. I put great care into judging when to push, when to pull back, and when to stop altogether and regroup.

Sometimes there is frustration and as a teacher it is very important to take that experience and turn it into a positive learning situation. During the course of a lesson, we’ll take a "breather" and simply talk about the day, or work on material that is enjoyable and in
stills a sense of self-confidence —anything to release the tension of acquiring a new language-the musical language. Within moments, we are ready to begin again, refreshed and renewed.

I believe it's important to maintain a relaxed environment that encourages self-confidence, self-motivation, musical growth and excellence. To push students too much, being insensitive to their needs and limits, is to fail them. Sometimes this may cause students to dislike not only piano, but music itself. That may translate into personal regret years later. As their teacher, I do anything and everything to avoid that occurrence, making adjustments to their course of study.

Children and adults choose to end pursuing lessons at times, but only on an up-beat note, with suggestions of other paths to explore, other ways to grow and evolve. Closure is consciously done in a respectable and healthy manner, and students are never purposely abandoned. Having musical experience, for whatever length of time, can have lasting positive, even trans-formative effects on a student-child or adult.

As a teacher, I never give up on a pupil and attempt to instill that same dedication in each student. The piano is an instrument that requires passion, discipline, and strength. Moreover, it requires humility in recognizing personal and professional limitations with understanding and peace. We are not all capable of being world-class pianists; however, we can all foster within us their qualities of the love, joy, and awe that music brings to both the listener and performer.

In short: I offer myself as your personal musical guide to assist you in honing the skills needed to become the best musician your mind's eye can imagine. Learning music truly is an adventure that is meant to be fun and rewarding. Our time spent together will uphold that ideal.

EDUCATION

Fifteen years of private Classical Piano study under Martha Ashleigh, Hans Boepple, Santa Clara University, California. Seven years of private Classical Viola study under Christine Becktrom, Modesto, California.

Six years of private composition, music theory and counterpoint study under Martha Ashleigh, Dr. Pamela Quist at Santa Clara University and Dr. Michael Fiday at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

EXPERIENCE

In addition to studying piano and composition extensively for many years I've been fortunate to have many other valuable experiences both as a teacher and musician, including but not limited to the following:

As a teacher, I've been teaching for over 5 years, having worked with young children to college age and beyond in a private lesson setting. During my undergraduate years I substituted for my professor at a local community college teaching the keyboard lab class for two semesters in a group piano setting. I have taught not only music but, composition and music theory as well.

As a church musician, I've assisted the Music Director at a northern CA catholic church as organist and pianist. I also accompanied the church choir during holidays and feast days.

As a soloist, I've performed extensively throughout California as a solo artist presenting standard literature and original works, as an accompanist for vocalists, and in chamber ensembles.

As an orchestral musician, I've toured throughout Japan presenting standard literature in Kurume, Fukuoka and Tokyo.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson will vary depending on age and skill level when starting lessons. The first lesson will at minimum assess where your natural musical sensibilities are through a few interactive musicianship activities (rhythm etc.). Depending on the student and lesson time-frame we may also cover one or more of the following: basic hand position, keyboard geography, proper way to sit at piano (posture) and introduce some simple technique building exercises for building finger strength. From there the lesson content will be adapted to the individual's musical needs and goals. In future lessons music theory and musicianship skills will receive emphasis as well.

To what extent deeper aspects of music theory and musicianship are explored and taught will again depend on the student's musical goals keeping the following question in mind: Is music a hobby pursued only for enjoyment or is it being pursued as a serious course of study?

Neither path is better than the other, it is merely a matter of what degree of musical proficiency and understanding you want to walk away with during your time spent learning music.

As a beginner (in the 5-12 years old range), we will typically spend a lot of time discovering music through creative "musical games," flash cards and keeping the teaching atmosphere fun and inspiring. There will also be some technical exercises to build finger strength and dexterity early on which we will continue moving forward.

For younger children (ages 5-8), I prefer for the parents to be present and engaged throughout the learning process and to assist the teacher in supporting the child's musical development. A supportive home environment is important for not only personal, but musical growth.

While I will hold a student to his or her personal musical goals, I will not be overly strict especially with young musicians who are discovering and being introduced to music for the first time. During the early formative years a nurturing environment that instills creativity, self-confidence and self-motivation is the most important. The priority is to engage a young students interest and instill the belief that "playing the piano time" is not a chore, but something exciting and beneficial. Therefore, a mixture of effective musical activities and technique building exercises are implemented throughout the course of study.

Adult beginners will also be introduced to technique building exercises, music fundamentals and learning new repertoire in an age-appropriate context. As your teacher I will keep you accountable to your musical goals and monitor progress accordingly.

All students will be asked to purchase lesson materials that can be received either through the teacher, directly from the publisher online or local music store. Generally, these will include a piano method book, technique, repertoire and theory book. Supplemental materials such as flash cards may need to be purchased as well (often times students make their own flash cards though!)

When I started taking lessons with Dustin, my goals were to improve my ability to play the piano, strengthen my ear, and to have a deeper understanding of music theory. Starting from our first lesson Dustin had a lesson plan already mapped out that would help me accomplish my goals. Now when I play piano, I have the ability to play and write songs with much less effort. The ear training Dustin provided has brought me to the point that I can identify chords and intervals in music clearly. With a good foundation of theory established, being assigned harmonic analysis of a musical piece is not a daunting task. Overall, I have been very happy with Dustin's style of teaching and plan to continue taking lessons with him.

Every musician was first and foremost a fan of music. My love of
music began when my mother took me to a performance of Beethoven's
fifth symphony when, coincidentally, I was five. From that point, I
started fervently listening to my mother's records (those are the
huge, black monstrosities that people in the pre-historic used in
place of iPods), followed closely by my father's CD collection.
After a while, this ravenous desire of to know and feel music moved
me to play an instrument. After a couple of false starts with the
drums and violin, I found my true musical calling: the guitar.

On January 25th 1995, on a whim, I began playing the
guitar, and I have yet to put it down. Along the way I've picked up
a number of friends for my guitar, including the bass, the lute, the
sitar and, once again, the drums. After on
ly a few years of
practice, I started playing professionally, in bands and solo guitar.
Live playing experience, I believe, is the most important experience
that any musician can have, in that, the most important part of music
is how it sounds, and playing in front of people is the quickest way
to learn how to play effectively. And this is what I teach; how to
be a musician, not just a technician.

*** Lesson Details ***
A student can expect a curriculum tailor-made to their needs and personality. Every person learns differently and this is an important distinction in my teaching style. Some students need a strong hand to keep them working, others need to find many different ways to the same conclusion to keep them focused, while still others need a laid-back friend in order to accept knowledge.

I stress rhythmic literacy, for, as my jazz teacher always said, "rhythm is king." If composition is important to you, then we'll focus on music theory, but if you're just wanting to learn how to play some fun rock tunes with your friends on the weekends, we can do that as well. As I stated before, we'll get you playing in front of people in no time.

I would think the first lesson is always the hardest to start since as an instructor you don’t know what skill level you will be teaching. Trevor started the class asking what I wanted to accomplish and ended with lots of practice lessons for me to complete. Looking forward to more classes with him.

Each lesson includes scales, arpeggios, etudes, duets and a new piece of music from different eras of music. I emphasize on tone production, correct intonation, accurate rhythm, reading skills, as well as an expressive and strong vibrato. My primary goal is to train students to become an excellent violinist, to play numerous compositions with the highest musicality and interpretation.
My studio at my home is a spacey room that is properly ventilated and well lit, possessing enough chairs available for both my students and possible guests. There are two music stands and an electric Suzuki piano, which can be used for accompaniment in our lessons, especially in preparation for upcoming con

He is very patient and has excellent communication skills. I have no knowledge of how to play the violin or music of any kind. After my first lesson I strongly feel he will be my private instructor for many years to come. I left with proper technique of how this instrument is to be cared for and good posture when practicing. He also informed me of the books we will be incorporating into my lessons. Most importantly homework is given and he is very patient and explains everything at your level.

I took lessons with David for a few months and I was rather thrilled with the lessons in the beginning and quite upset towards the end of our time together. David is a great teacher for the general hobbyist or child but I outgrew his lesson homework within 8 weeks of lessons. It was at this point that I asked David to record the vocal warm ups so I (as well as other students) could practice more conveniently. He assured me he would, and week after weeks, the warm ups weren't available. David knew I only had a limited amount of time until I was moving from the area. He had the idea that we should record one of my original songs using his homemade recording studio. He wasn't very knowledgeable of the program he was using at the time and I was his first student who he tried this on. We ended up using about 6 of my lesson credits on this song (which was out of time from the beginning). After a while of minimal progress on the song, no recorded vocal warm ups and plateau in my vocal learning, I decided to cancel lessons with David earlier than decided. David is a very friendly person with a moderate knowledge of most instruments but I would not recommend him to someone who is serious about advancing their craft on a professional level.

About Tzytle
I am originally from Oceanside, California. I received my Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance from Boston Conservatory and her Masters of Music in Voice and Opera Performance from Northwestern University. During my degree programs, I taught elementary school to college age students in musical theatre, pop and opera singing. As a performer, I specialize in both musical theatre and opera. She has worked with Ohio Light Opera, Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre and Lyric Opera San Diego. She has played roles ranging from Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes to Mother Marie in Dialogues of the Carmelites. When she is not singing, Ms. Steinman also loves to dance jazz, ballet, tap and hip hop.

I am known for my presence on stage and acting abilities and was once described as the Lucile Ball of opera. I enjoy sharing her heart and soul with
all around me, on and off stage. I believe that Art is essential to life and a basic need of human existence. While medical doctors help with physical pains, artists are doctors who help revive the souls of the world.

I believe that everyone has their own unique voice and I want to help find that voice. Singing is a beautiful experience that enriches the soul.
