About Beckie E.

Saxophone was the first instrument, aside from Piano, that I started to play. I started in 4th grade with this instrument until my middle school teacher in 6th grade asked me to switch to French horn. I continued to perform on Saxophone in our school's Jazz ensemble in Middle School and High School. I no longer play the Saxophone but can still teach students how to play the instrument!
About Beckie
My name is Beckie and I have played music for all of my life. I play and teach many different instruments such as the French horn, trumpet, piano, saxophone, mandolin, guitar, and voice.
In 2017, I graduated from UCLA with my Masters in Music on French horn. In 2010, I graduated from Chapman University with two degrees in music- music performance on French horn and music education.
My first job was as at a Montessori Academy elementary school, where I was the brass coach for 3 years. This is where I fell in love with teaching. I have been teaching privately for 15 years now and love the one-on-one attention that I can give the students.
I have worked with many great organizations like the Los Angeles Philharmonic and various music studios around Los Angeles.
I currently am a freelance musician, Elementary school music
I look forward to working with you or your child in helping to start or continue a musical instrument!
*** Lesson Details ***
When I teach lessons, I like to check in with the student to see how their day was and how practicing throughout the week went. I am very patient and will teach at the student's pace. I expect the student to practice during the week, even if for just 10 minutes a day. I will always work with a student as long as it takes to have them understand what is difficult for them musically.
For music, I try to find free options but books may be a better option. When we choose a book to play out of, I like to choose a book together so that the parent and the child are happy about the selection. Books vary based on what the needs are for each student. Books are to be purchased by the parent.
I usually play my instruments with the students, but being a freelance musician, I may need to save my chops for an upcoming gig. Not always, but happens from time to time :)
I also have a 24-hour cancellation/lesson change policy. If you are late for your lesson, I will try to accommodate the time but may have students or rehearsals afterward so it will not always be a guarantee. If you are going to be late, please text me BEFORE the scheduled lesson. Lessons are to be every week as I DO NOT teach bi-weekly lessons.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Lesson space is in my home w/ seating for parents and music stand for students. I also have a cat and a dog, so if you are allergic, please let me know! The dog and the cat are put away for the lessons as to not distract either one of us! They are pretty cute!
*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to provide the music books and their own instruments and music stand.
*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical genres of playing but I am able to teach all different styles of music.

I teach saxophone primarily through the tried and true Rubank method. Students will learn how to properly care for the instrument, how to read music, music theory, instrument technique, practice techniques, ear training (how to play by ear), reed selection, and both classical and jazz repertoire. I also employ custom exercises specifically for saxophone to help my students progress the fastest.

CloseI have played saxophone for 7 years, and have taught saxophone student's as a P.A.L.S. teacher at the Aspen Music Summer Festival. I enjoy teaching everything from beginning fundamentals to jazz and improvisation.
About Josh
My passion for teaching is similar to my passion for performing, and I have experience teaching privately since 2013 and in front of large groups, as a staff member for a high school marching band.
My teaching style is all about fundamentals as I try and break down the things you need to know about playing into easy to understand fundamentals that can be applied to all future playing.

I love working with brand new beginners all the way seasoned players who might be prepping for music college. I like to keep an fun atmosphere around the lesson and try to find out what drives my students.
We'll work through pieces from school and expand into topics such as improvisation, reading, music theory, and finding inspiration from great players. I have a jazz background, and love working with aspiring jazz musicians as well.
About Steve
I have been in touring bands, jazz bands, wedding bands, funk bands, and pop bands. Fun Fact: I was even once in a bossa nova Guns n' Roses jazz trio called Guns n' Nova. You could say I've played a lot of different styles.
I teach my clients in my comfortable home teaching studio in Clairemont, San Diego. I work with beginner and intermediate piano students and all levels for saxophone. I'm open to students of any age and music
In my music career I've performed with Steffan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band) and Ed Robertson (Bare Naked Ladies) and played in bands that have opened for Guster, Blues Traveler, and The Wailers.
Some of the musical styles I regularly teach: Pop, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Soul, R&B, and Classical.

I just bought an additional 10 lessons and had my first lesson of 2018 with Steve this May and am very happy with my decision. He is giving me great feedback on charts I am playing and really giving me a sounding board to ask questions and grow as a musician within this instrument (alto). I personally have a fairly solid foundation in music theory but if you are new to music theory Steve can break that down for you step by step.
I look forward to continuing my lessons with Steve and am already seeing the benefits of having a great teacher.

About Andrew
In addition to my performances at BYU, I have performed and collaborated with numerous groups and artists on the Provo and Salt Lake music scenes as both a commercial and studio artist, such as my collaboration with Utah-based vocalist Emily Merrell in her performance at the 2018 Jazz Education Network Conference in Dallas, Texas. I also returned to the northwest in 2015 to take part in the Port Townsend Jazz Festival, where I studied with jazz greats such as Terrell Stafford, Steve Wilson, Bob Mintzer and others.

About Phil W.

I've been teaching private music lessons for nearly 30 years. I taught public school music (beginning band) and then spent 10 years at a university training future music teachers. I run an active studio, direct music at a church and perform regularly. I have a PhD in education with an emphasis in music.
About Phil
I've had a successful performing career and have played twice at Carnegie Hall and in the National Conservatory of Music in Ecuador, just to name a few venues. I have recorded music, won song-writing competitions, and have had music published. While I still actively direct music at a thriving church, my passion is in teaching others the love of music.
I believe in teaching and focussing on the fundamentals of music, as it is often overlooked by many teachers. Once the basic skills are learned, musicians can apply the same skill sets to other literature.
I look forward to helping you develop your talent.
