Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

A woodwind player since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach beginning clarinet lessons.

About Thomas
Piano, woodwinds, trumpet, composition
Chords, sight-reading, theory, jazz, classical, and pop

No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them the chance to learn music. And bonus points for you: after just a couple years, you’ll have free entertainment every Christmas!

Or maybe YOU’RE the one that wishes to learn! It is never too late to begin learning an instrument. Everybody has the ability, and if you’re determined and interested, there’s nothing stopping us from achieving this very special goal. (Interested in learning to compose? Scroll to the bottom to learn more.)

Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alon
gside a song you love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun. Music lessons include:

1. Building a really strong foundation so it's easy to interpret or understand any part, and to play it with the right amount of practice.

2. Learning to sight-read music, so you can play it well as soon as possible.

3. Learning how to improvise (make-up) music, learn music by ear, and to understand and create chords, which lets you play music in different ways.

4. Play different styles from classical to jazz to popular music.

5. Learning how to practice efficiently so you can learn music as fast as possible.

6. Composing our own original music.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.

Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!

---

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.

Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.

We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

When students study with me, they can expect to learn in a patient, fun and challenging environment to the degree of the students capabilities. I like to focus on what I can see needs development but also integrate what the student wants as well. Generally at our first lesson, I will take inventory and set a goal plan that will map out our first round of lessons together.

As far as technical work goes, I generally stick to the standard etude and scale books. For beginning students I also work with building music reading skills while learning to play the instrument.

Depending on playing levels, lessons can consist of fundamental work, a solo piece and any ensemble music that may need attention. This can all be negotiated with student and or parent to best suit what they want to achieve with lessons.

About Jason
*available to travel and teach near my home location as well*

I have played Clarinet for 15 years, and taught for 2. Currently I am pursuing a Bachelors of Music in Performance at California State University-Long Beach. My previous instructors include Mr. Paul Bambach at the University of California-Santa Barbara, and Dr. David Lopez at Cerritos College. Currently I study with Dr. Michael Grego at CSULB.

Outside of Cal State Long Beach, I also am an active member of the Los Angeles Clarinet Choir.

Over the years of my own private instruction, I have been taught in manners which promote self analysis, the standard development of technique and control and keep the experience enjoyable and fun. This is a method I try to implement when teaching clarinet, or music theory to a student.

I have been teaching beginning and intermediate bands for the past 8 years. I love teaching beginners to help them figure out how to accomplish learning an instrument. It is a challenging thing to do, but I make learning a new instrument fun and as easy as I can. I have been playing the Clarinet for over 20 years and have a concentration from Nazareth College of Rochester in all woodwind instruments. I have taught privately for 10 years now on all band instruments as well as Piano! I enjoy playing the bassoon in my free time as well as all woodwinds in Pit Orchestras around the Rochester, NY area, and I play the clarinet for the Eastman Community Music School's Music Educator Wind Ensemble. I would love the opportunity to share my love of music and instruments with you.

About Rebecca
I have been teaching in Public Schools for 8 years and teaching privately for 10. I love teaching beginners through the intermediate level. Students just starting off learning an instrument need an experience that is going to be encouraging and fun. I have taught ages 5 through adult on all band instruments and piano. Work with me and I will help you to learn an instrument, read music, and have fun while doing it! Learning to play an instrument is a life long skill that will last forever!

Want to develop a beautiful clarinet sound while avoiding awkward squawks and squeaks? As both a saxophone and clarinet player, I can help with many of the technical challenges that may affect a beginning or intermediate player. My curriculum focuses heavily on the Cyril Rose studies for clarinet, as well as the Rubank Advanced Method.

About Andrew
I have been an active professional musician in the Utah Valley for the past 4 years. I came to Utah from Portland, Oregon in 2011 to study at Brigham Young University under Ray Smith, where I earned a BM in Saxophone Performance in 2018. While there, I performed as a member of the BYU Synthesis Big Band as a performer and featured soloist, sharing the stage with the likes of Gladys Knight, Peter Hollens, Konrad Herwig, Ed Calle, Corey Christianson and others. In 2016 I went with Synthesis on a tour of Eastern Europe, where the band and I performed at the Salkrastu Jazz Festival. I can be heard as a featured soloist on the tracks “Laura” and “Downtime” from the BYU Synthesis Album “Downtime” (2018). On the classical side, I was selected as a finalist three years in a row for the BYU Concerto Competition, played tenor saxophone from 2015 to
2017 in the BYU Wind Symphony, and played principal clarinet in the BYU Symphony orchestra in 2018.

In addition to my performances at BYU, I have performed and collaborated with numerous groups and artists on the Provo and Salt Lake music scenes as both a commercial and studio artist, such as my collaboration with Utah-based vocalist Emily Merrell in her performance at the 2018 Jazz Education Network Conference in Dallas, Texas. I also returned to the northwest in 2015 to take part in the Port Townsend Jazz Festival, where I studied with jazz greats such as Terrell Stafford, Steve Wilson, Bob Mintzer and others.

I am a passionate teacher and am happy to take students of all levels, over Skype or in person.

Andrew has made taking saxophone lessons so much fun for my son. He is very dedicated to working with students at their level of ability and makes it fun by including their own personal interests. For example he has worked with my son on several Star Wars themes and other songs that got my son interested in playing saxophone in the first place. We highly recommend Andrew. For reference my son is 14 and at a beginner level.

Andrew was recommended to us by the BYU music faculty, when I contacted them to see who might be a good private instructor for my teenage daughter (who has a background in other instruments but wanted to learn more with sax than her band teacher could provide in a classroom setting). Andrew has always been very knowledgeable, extremely personable, and willing to match our needs with his expertise. When we went to a local music store to get some additional accessories, one of his peers assisted us--and he described Andrew as "insanely talented" on the sax. I would fully recommend him!

Learn skills such as proper technique, how to generate a beautiful tone, and sight-reading, improvisation, how to practice efficiently and more.

About Emery
Emery Mesich is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and producer hailing from Sacramento, California. As a child he was first introduced to musical genres like classic rock, folk, and jazz. Driven by music, he started playing clarinet at the age of eight. Two years later he quickly became fluent on saxophone after discovering jazz greats like Charlie Parker and Jackie Mclean. Emery grew up playing in symphonies, community bands, churches, college bands (Sacramento State University an American River College), and was considered an “old soul” because of his ability to excel on his instrument and command great stage presence at an early age. Throughout High School Emery excelled winning numerous awards at Reno, Monterey, Essentially Ellington, and Charles Mingus Jazz Festivals as well as touring with the Next Generation Jazz Orches
tra to Japan in 2014. In 2014 Emery was granted a full scholarship to the Berklee School of music where he recently graduated with two Bachelor's degrees; Performance (saxophone principal) and Contemporary Writing and Production. Emery owes much of his success and inspiration to his private instructors who assisted his learning at an early age, and in turn teaching others has also become a passion of Emery's. Because of his age Emery works well with young kids as well as young adults. If you have any questions feel free to reach out.
