I have been a professional singer for most of my adult life. I love teaching and sharing my knowledge with students as they discover ways towards self-expression through the voice.

About Amy
I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldekrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and I am currently studying for a masters in social work at Walden University.
I believe, within all of us, Is the ability to express something distinctive and original. I work to help the student discover their individual and unique voice, weather it be through singing, acting or writing. I share with my students tools to gain the ability and con
fidence to achieve their goals. I empathize deeply with the challenges students may face when pursuing a life in the creative and performing arts, having worked professionally in those arena's for most of my adult life. I believe, it is the teachers job to respect each students individual process of learning.
My students have gone on to become recording artists, Broadway performers, movie actors, blues and cabaret artists and published writers.

Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

*** Studio Equipment ***
home- 10 minutes away from Manhattan with piano, seating for parents
-practice studio seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a piano, cd/mp3 player and an large library of songbooks to work from. The student should bring sheet music of songs they want to work on and a recording device.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching how to sing rock, pop, musical theater, jazz, and blues without hurting the voice as well as method acting instruction.

After the first lesson, I've realized how much there is to learn about singing! I was so impressed by Hayley's wide range of knowledge and she gave me a few manageable things to work on for the week. I am already learning to feel and manipulate the placement of the vibrations of the notes I sing in different places in my chest and face - something I had never been aware of before. Looking forward to my next lesson!

As an experienced performer and arranger myself, I have extensive insight into the rudiments of many different styles of music (Classical, Musical Theater, A Cappella, Pop, Jazz, Barbershop... to name a few!). My lessons will be customized to the passions of my students and may include things like sight reading, music theory, and aural training as well as vocal repertoire and technique. Students of all ages and all skill levels welcome!

About Andy
I am a professional singer, arranger, and educator originally from Connecticut. I graduated from Central Connecticut State University with degrees in Classical Vocal Performance and Business Management, but have since made a career out of singing and arranging music in many different styles from pop to jazz to classical to choral to barbershop.

I currently sing with a nationally touring Vocal Jazz A Cappella group as well as a variety of different corporate band companies in the greater Los Angeles area. I also write and arrange music professionally. I firmly believe in setting an example of musical excellence and love providing insight into important universal skills like performance tactics and networking as well as developing strong musicianship.

As a musician, it is important to me to be versatile. Having a well rounded understa
nding of music in all aspects ultimately makes you better at your primary focus whether that ends up being your voice, your pen, your ears, or another instrument. Though I am committed to helping you hone the skills that you are passionate about, I will also work with you to make sure that we are ultimately bringing your whole musicianship to the next level.

I love working with students who are passionate about all that music has to offer. I look forward to helping you on your way to becoming a better musician!
