Whether your student needs help with arithmetic, geometry, algebra, or beyond, I can help make math easy and fun! I work great with students of all ages from elementary to college and make sure that each of my students truly understand the mathematic concepts that they are challenged with.
My name is Matthew, and I teach many people of different ages academic topics from arithmetic to algebra 2/trigonometry, science, reading/grammar, as well as all kinds of music and instruments!
I hold a Masters of Arts in Music Composition from Mills College in Oakland, CA and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from UC Santa Cruz.
Musically, I specialize in drum set and percussion, piano, voice, and guitar instruction (4 and 6 string) woodwinds, brass, and violin family strings. I have been teaching in Walnut Creek at my home studio/office for 10 years, worked with local schools such as Walnut Creek Intermediate, Meher School, Las Lomas High School, and Stanley Middle School.
Some basic pedagogical ideas:
I make sure each student learns the necessary techniques, rhythms as well as reading and performing skills that each p
Each student has different goals and interests that draw them toward certain aspects of music. My goal is to supplement the basic music training while offering guidance in more complex areas of music that bring excitement and enjoyment to learning. I work with each student to find not only what aspects of music they are interested in but also what styles and groups they enjoy and aspire to play or just enjoying listening or singing along.
Balancing all of this during a 30-60 min lesson and then during your practice time in the week can be tough, so I work with each student to set priorities and goals based on their interest and skill and follow through with them!
Here are a few of my BASIC POLICIES; please read so you can know if we will be a good fit. If you have any questions about them feel free to ask, but I rarely make exceptions!
-I only accept students (usually) who have already started reading
-All students and parents must be on a fairly flexible schedule and reply to phone calls or texts on the day of lessons. With 30+ concurrent students and families, schedules are constantly changing to accommodate each other. If it works for everyone to help another student out by switching, then I will request that of you, but I ALWAYS GUARANTEE YOUR SCHEDULED LESSON TIME.
-I always guarantee your full lesson time. I ask that each student (unless previously noted) keeps 10-15 minutes before and after their lesson free in case of an unexpected delay or cancellation.
- I require AT LEAST 72 HOURS ADVANCED NOTICE FOR RESCHEDULES. If you need to reschedule then I prefer knowing a week in advance. IF YOU CANCEL WITHIN 72 HOURS I DO NOT GUARANTEE A MAKEUP SPOT.
If you are at all interested for yourself or your child please don't hesitate to call and ask questions.
Have a great day!

Pre Algebra is based on a simple set of rules that must be learned, memorized, and applied. I'm a professional teacher with a unique ability to perceive what students understand and how they understand, which I use to efficiently build students' knowledge, saving them both time and money.
Whatever subject or instrument I teach, I celebrate students' successes; and I enjoy helping learners have new aha moments.
The majority of my students take guitar, bass guitar, or Spanish lessons. I am an educator and help my students learn other skills and knowledge sets too.
I went to Ohio State University for college, earned a BA in Music Education, and graduated Cum Laude. I also spent 4 years in the Ohio State University Marching Band.
Through my healing journey, I've developed patience, insight, and understanding for my students' learning processes.
I'm excited to help you incorporate new skills into your life!

I think any kids lucky enough to learn music from Joshua will have fun and hopefully fall in love with learning it, just like my kids have.

Being an adult beginner with music lessons, Joshua eases my frustration on immediately wanting to play perfect notes and chords. I look forward to continuing lessons.

I have been helping others learn math for four years now, and I enjoy watching it click for others just as much as I enjoyed it when math first began to make sense to me. From experience, I know that mathematics can be very easy, or seemingly impossible to learn depending on how the information and concepts are presented. I first gauge how my students like to learn and determine any weak areas that need strengthening, and then I guide them towards a firm understanding of the concepts.
As a tutor, my goal is not to impress students with how much I know. Rather, my goal is to impress my students by showing them how easily math and science concepts can come to them when they are presented the material in a straightforward way. The late physicist, Richard Feynman, posited that the ability to explain complicated ideas in a simple manner is the true mark of understanding. I agree with this assertion, and I make it my goal each tutoring session to explain even the most complex phenomena in a simple way, so that my student will come away from the lesson invariably understanding it. Additionally, I emphasize a strong understanding of the fundamentals, because both math and science are heavily inductive disciplines; many of the theorems and laws are founded on other, more fundamental principles. I have personally experienced the discouragement of trying to learn material that is beyond my foundation level, and so I can empathize with students who are in that boat. Fortunately, I have learned that the remedy is always a return to, and a strengthening of the basics. That is the approach I take with students who find themselves struggling in a course.
My online teaching platform is a “black board” drawing program that my students can follow along with as I explain concepts and solve problems. I simply share my screen with them during the session, and at the end, I take a screenshot of the notes and email it to my students for their reference. I hope this brief explanation of my qualifications and teaching style has provided a clear image of what you can expect from me as your tutor. I am eager to hear from you and help you succeed in your academic goals!

Last time I studied math was 20+ years. I am 40 years old and about to finish my second degree CRJ, and like many others I left math class at the end. Taking the math prep test (which I failed) placed me almost in kindergarten..Lol! and I knew I needed help to re-learn math. I am so happy Colin answered my request (I sent 15 requests, and only 2 teachers answered). I wanted to start eating the study guide provided by CSN and just focus on the topics, but Colin wanted to show me the "why we have numbers, type of numbers, etc" definitely I wanted to fly before I could walk, and I am so grateful he had a different plan............because IT MAKE SENSE!
I mentioned I prefered to have a lobotomy (siks!) instead of facing math in my 40's because I never had a chance to understand math, I just digested the fact I was going to fail and obtain an "s" for grade. I am looking forward to like, learn, and comprehend math with Colin's help so I can graduate in December 2018.
Thanks Colin :)

~~~~~~~~~~~ My Personal Message to You ~~~~~~~~~~~
One of the wisest teachers once said that poor grades, study habits, and test scores are not life-threatening, but they are college-, job- , career-, and quality-of-life threatening. The most competitive students take a pro-active approaching to academics and tutoring while the least competitive take a reactive approach. All you need to do is watching the documentary 'Two Million Minutes' by Bob Compton to realize why students in other countries such as India and China surpass American peers in almost every subject, especially language (writing, grammar, etc.), math, science, and engineering-related subjects. They attend extra classes and tutoring from 6-7 AM in the morning to almost midnight.
In today's fast-paced and competitive job market, there is simply too much to lose by not investing now in your child's or your education. If a student is struggling, it makes sense to get him/her the help needed so that the time spent in school is worthwhile. Great grades and test scores can open doors that may have been previously closed and are also significant factors when determining scholarships, so investing time and effort now can pay off substantially in the future. Finally, let's not forget the most important part in all of this: the student. The confidence, knowledge, and skills that a student gains through effective tutoring can last a lifetime.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch. Every day spent waiting is another class or lecture's worth of material that you might potentially fall behind or another low quiz/test/exam score that will only make it harder to recover from. I have had too many students who could have received the grade(s) they wanted had they contacted me from the beginning.
You can expect to be assisted in whatever coursework you have, and be provided custom tailored lesson plans and materials based on your learning preferences to help you achieve your goals.
I've been tutoring students in Math of all levels from Pre-Algebra all the way up to Calculus for over 5 years. My philosophy is teaching you how to approach each problem rather than simply giving you a straight answer. My goal is to help you see the patterns between different questions and help you develop a solid strategy for each type of question you approach.
I graduated with honors from the University of California, Berkeley in 20
I have over 1000 hours of tutoring and teaching experience, and am comfortable with Math, Physics, Chemistry, Writing, English, French, ACT, and SAT. My only policy is that you do not simply ask me for the answer, but rather help me help you through questions. A big part of your college career is that you find yourself not being able to ask the right questions to guide you to the answer, and I want to be here to help you learn that skill. I will help walk you through all the steps of the problem and clarify the theory along the way so that you can gain mastery of the material. However, if you are simply asking for someone who will give you a quick answer without a thorough explanation, please seek another tutor.
I can tutor ACT Math, ACT English, ACT Reading, ACT Writing, ACT Science, SAT Math, SAT Writing, Algebra 2, Algebra 1, Biostatistics, Statistics, AP Statistics, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus BC/AB, Introduction to College Calculus, Probability, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Biophysical Chemistry, Introduction to College Physics, and Introduction to College Chemistry. I also have extensive experience with college admissions guidance and organization & study skills.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you master the topics you are studying!
