Our lessons will be both encouraging and productive, but most importantly, will foster a love and understanding of music. Curriculum is individualized based on the student’s musical interests. Students will learn songs they love to play while also developing proper technique and important musical skills like sight-reading, a solid understanding of rhythm, music theory, and ear training. We will work together to help you achieve your goals and gain a well-rounded music education, regardless of age or musical background.

About Summer
I believe that the most important aspect of teaching music is creating a positive and individualized learning environment while simultaneously teaching the necessary technique and knowledge to play your instrument both successfully and confidently.

Above all, our lessons will focus on reaching your musical potential. Curriculum for our lessons will draw from variety of methods and aspects of music education. These include music theory, ear training, sight-reading, body mapping, technique, improvisation skills, arranging, and composition. I place a great emphasis on learning repertoire from a variety of genres of music.

Students will have the opportunity to share what they learn at spring and winter recitals and to participate in group lessons on a regular basis.

I have 9 years of experience teaching piano, guitar, music th
eory, and ear training to students of all ages, levels, and musical backgrounds, including students with special needs.

I am currently completing my Masters degree at University of California, Irvine. Prior to my graduate studies, I was based in New York City, where I ran a private music studio, performed throughout the city with my jazz quintet, and worked as an accompanist and musical director. I graduated with honors from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA with degrees in Performance and Audio Engineering.

Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about lessons or scheduling!

Summer is fantastic. We first had her as an in-home instructor in Manhattan, and now that she has moved to California, we have her online. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about music, has introduced the kids to different genres, music theory and online music practice apps to keep them engaged and learning. She gives them homework "listening assignments" to help develop their ear for music. The kids have grown so much in their love of music and their ability to sight-read, play and understand music theory.

I've had the privilege of teaching 5 year olds through 50 year olds with great success. You're never too old or young to get something valuable out of an instrument and contemporary guitar really bridges generations like few other instruments. I cater guitar lessons to the individual learner. I can take a more technique based approach for serious students or we can just learn to play some songs you love if you don't have a serious interest but just want to have fun.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

About Lu
I have three daughters [Elaine, Grace and Emma] so I'm very comfortable with kids of all ages as well as adults. I studied Music Performance with a concentration in Classical Guitar at Eastern University subsequently received an Honorable Discharge for 8 years in the US Army. I currently work in at UCSD and teach lessons privately and through Take Lessons.

I'm very easy going and patient. I cater each lesson individually to the goals of the student and/or parent. I take special care to keep my students motivated and encouraged. My goal isn't just to teach technical skills and repertoire but to help foster a lasting love of music.

As far as my own musical interests, I love classical guitar and the folk/songwriter/indie genres. Artists I listen to regularly include Andrew Bird, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Glen Hansard, Gregory Alan Isakov,
Iron and Wine, The Milk Carton Kids, Simon and Garfunkel, M.Ward, Of Monsters & Men, Nick Drake, Elliot Smith, Ray LaMontagne, The Mountain Goats, .. I'm just realizing that could go on for a long time so I'll pause there.

I also I stay up to speed on most contemporary artists for the sake of my students. I regularly teach songs current pop artists in the interest of maintaining student engagement.

I do have a real passion for Classical Guitar music. There are few things that give me more joy than playing classical guitar. I love any opportunity to share that with someone eager to learn. I prefer to start from scratch with classical guitar students but will work with more advanced students when requested.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons I like to start by reviewing what has been learned in the previous lesson, making sure to address any concerns before teaching anything new. To ensure the student is truly learning and maintaining what I teach during our lessons we will do some short musical exercises which apply to that week's lesson, as well as some musical repertoire that reinforces the new principles taught in that lesson. I feel that correct repetitive practice of these exercises and music will ensure happiness with your progression as a musician. I do my best to learn the musical interests of my students and to personalize each lesson/assignment so that they remain engaged and excited.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have small studio space connected to my family room with a Piano and my guitars/amps (and any other instruments my wife and I have collected over the years). Parents can sit in studio or relax in the family room during lessons. It's a nice quiet suburban area and there's plenty of parking.

IMPORTANT: For those with serious pet allergies, I do have friendly pets and, although they stay out of the room for my lessons, they may irritate your allergies.

Lu is a fantastic teacher. He is patient, fun, and very knowledgeable about the guitar and music in general. He happily caters to your skills, background, and musical tastes. He is there to make sure you understand everything, but also have fun with what you are playing.

As a beginner, we started with a few basic cords so I could start playing real songs within my first week. He is attentive and flexible to what you are looking to learn, and I very much appreciate his patience and accommodating nature.

Lu is a wonderful guitar teacher and I highly recommend him!

Learn any song you want from any time. I have a good ear and can pick any song off a CD or YouTube. I can then write it out for you and teach it to you in any key. Don't be afraid, I like to use Tablature so you don't need to be able to read music.

Do you want to play Lead Guitar? I can teach you all the scales, arpeggios & Pentatonics that you need to know to become a rock 'n' roll guitar god!

About Jesse
Jesse H. plays guitar with The Mar Dels, one of San Diego’s best-known dance and party bands. But he’s more than just a rock-and-roller — he’s studied jazz and classical guitar with other master musicians.

His lessons focus on developing:

- Right and left hand technique
- Finger picking and flat picking
- Tonal and sound quality
- Playing and singing
- The ability to play a solo
- Chords, scales, and arpeggios

Jesse’s broad skill set allows him to teach a variety of styles, though he’s happy to focus on one particular style if that’s what the student prefers.

Don’t miss this opportunity to take guitar or ukulele lessons from one of the top musicians in San Diego.

*** Overview ***
I studied jazz guitar with Peter Sprague and classical guitar with Celin Romero. While at UCSD, I studied with Pepe Romero in master class
es. In 1982, I became interested in classic rock and founded my band, The Mar Dels. During my time with the band, I’ve learned and performed many classic rock hits. One of the best-known dance/party bands in San Diego, the Mar Dels continue to play at private and public events locally, nationally, and globally.

*** Lesson Details ***
I give my guitar students a solid background in right and left hand technique. This includes finger picking technique for the right hand as well as flat picking. It’s important for students develop a correct left hand position, if they wish to continue to play for many years without injury to the left hand. It’s also very important to young students who may wish to move into classical music. Most classical guitar music can’t be played well with a standard rock left hand technique, but all rock music can be played very well with a good classical left hand technique.

Most of the studies I use with my students are songs, scales and arpeggios from my personal library, so it won’t be necessary for my students to buy any books right away. However, if students want some additional materials to review, I can suggest some titles.

I emphasize the quality of sound that the student produces with the instrument. Many musicians feel that playing a piece of music is like running a 100-yard dash. I prefer that my students play at a comfortable tempo and create beautiful sounds, rather than rushing through a song simply to show an ability to play fast. I feel that it’s very important to practice any new piece or exercise at a slow tempo till it can be played well with relaxed hands. When the tempo is gradually increased, one acquires beauty with speed.

Within the first three months, the average student should be able to play some open position chords, bar chords, and arpeggios, and be able to improvise over a chord progression using four or more notes from at least one pentatonic scale. I like my students to learn at least one guitar solo (a piece that features guitar either solo or with accompaniment) within six months that they could play for their friends or parents. If the student’s goal is to use the guitar to accompany their voice, they can learn to sing and play at the same time. This is a special skill that takes time to master, and is something that I have done for years. I’m happy to share my ideas on how to develop this skill with my students.

Ultimately, the progress of the student depends on their talent level and their desire to acquire skills. If a student is interested in only one style of playing, I am happy to focus on it; however, I have a very broad skill set on the guitar and I like my students to develop as many techniques as possible.

*** Equipment ***
Depending on the student’s interest, I bring either a steel string or a classical guitar, and I prefer that the student also have an appropriate instrument. If it’s an introductory lesson for a beginning student, I can bring an instrument for them to use for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
Since 1982 I have played guitar in The Mar Dels, a popular dance and party band so I am familiar with most pop, blues & rock styles of playing.

I have always loved the classical guitar and I am especially interested in good technique and tonal quality.

I have been playing the Guitar since I was in junior high and love being able to play. I enjoy passing on the knowledge I have to my students so they can write and/or perform their own songs, or just to play for their own enjoyment. I teach acoustic guitar, strumming styles, good timing, and fairly advanced finger picking techniques. My students range form 7 years on up.

About Susan
My primary focus is teaching the best and most effective Vocal Techniques to students of all ages and backgrounds. I also teach Acoustic Guitar and finger picking. My teaching includes the Orff and Suzuki methods of music for Children. My primary focus is on teaching singing and I have been teaching beginning to advanced Voice, as well as beginning to intermediate acoustic guitar privately for over 25 years. My students perform in recitals at least twice a year. They also participate in local Broadway productions and Musicals for C.Y.T., Coast Kids, Moonlight Theatre, Escondido Center for The Arts, J Company, and Star Theatre Productions. Students also are involved with Classical, Choral, Gospel, Pop and Rock performing. Along with these venues, students perform for talent shows at their schools, sing in bands, and perform locally at thei
r favorite venues. Many of my students have gone on to sing professionally and I currently teach Artists with ongoing careers.

My motto is learn to sing the "Easy, Natural Way". I teach the very best techniques, so vocalizing is not strained or difficult. My main focus is on teaching good "placement" of the sound, using the best ways to secure breath support and control, as well as good stage presence. Dealing with stage fright is always addressed, whether the singer wants to sing just for themselves, or audition for Musical Theatre productions. Styles range from pop to rock and opera.
I teach students of ALL AGES and work with every style or genre of music. Having spearheaded the Music program at the local YMCA has been a special treat in my teaching career!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I teach using a piano for learning vocal exercises and good techniques. I also have an acoustic Guitar that I use to teach my students how to play and learn good finger picking and strumming techniques. Using a computer is always employed, to pull up songs on YouTube, so students can choose what they would like to work on. Karaoke versions are used as well, for further training purposes.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When I teach at a student's home, I bring my Guitar with me, if they're studying this instrument. It is helpful for a student to have a piano or keyboard for me to teach voice, but I do have a keyboard I can bring if none is available. Having a computer close by is very helpful, to get the most out of the lesson as is possible.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in helping people who have created possible "bad habits" in their singing techniques. "Placement" and breathing, or "support", are of key importance. When good techniques are used, just about anyone can learn to sing beautifully. I also work with all ages, having background with Children, as well as teens, middle age, and elderly vocalists. Singing is universal, so every ethnicity is included in my student roster. If someone wants to learn to play the acoustic Guitar, this is always a plus, to accompany ones-self, or to focus on the instrument on it's own. Singing and playing should be "easy" and this is the approach I take in teaching.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching guitar to all ages and levels! And in a myriad of styles too- Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical, Flamenco, Country, Folk, etc. If you are looking to flourish and grow as a well rounded guitarist then sign up to begin your musical journey...

About David
A fun, friendly, and professional Music Instructor at your service for Voice, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums, & Ukulele! I have a BA degree from Florida Atlantic University in Music Performance for Classical/Flamenco/Jazz/Blues guitar and I've also performed on the Piano/Keyboards for a couple different bands too. Love to play & teach pretty much all styles of music! It is always a pure joy & truly rewarding to see my music students grow and flourish in their musical abilities. I have been enjoying doing this now for 20+ years- all ages & levels. I am also in a multi-dimensional rock project and a recording artist with my band Vision.

I believe it's important to learn the rudiments of music to build a good foundation (scales, chord vocabulary, theory, song-composition, performing techniques), but I also base the lessons on whatever th
e interests and strengths are for the student. For example, if you enjoy jazz more than classical we'll focus more on what you are particularly passionate about. I have also been a part of School of Rock Programs in which we provided performances for the students a la Jack Black. Please contact Takelessons to let the musical journey begin...

I took lessons with David for a few months and I was rather thrilled with the lessons in the beginning and quite upset towards the end of our time together. David is a great teacher for the general hobbyist or child but I outgrew his lesson homework within 8 weeks of lessons. It was at this point that I asked David to record the vocal warm ups so I (as well as other students) could practice more conveniently. He assured me he would, and week after weeks, the warm ups weren't available. David knew I only had a limited amount of time until I was moving from the area. He had the idea that we should record one of my original songs using his homemade recording studio. He wasn't very knowledgeable of the program he was using at the time and I was his first student who he tried this on. We ended up using about 6 of my lesson credits on this song (which was out of time from the beginning). After a while of minimal progress on the song, no recorded vocal warm ups and plateau in my vocal learning, I decided to cancel lessons with David earlier than decided. David is a very friendly person with a moderate knowledge of most instruments but I would not recommend him to someone who is serious about advancing their craft on a professional level.

Open and individualized lessons will teach each student in a unique fashion to fit them best. Chords, theory and musical reading will be the main focus of these lessons. My individualized approach works well for many students so that they learn what they want, how they want, and see the results that they specifically are looking for.

Students can expect to learn anything from basic chords to advanced theory and improvisational techniques on their instrument.

As a college graduate with an emphasis in guitar i feel that my mastery over the instrument and ability to teach is is second to none in the area. I feel equally confident in my mastery over acoustic guitar and electric guitar although acoustic guitar is my preferred instrument to teach. As a professional gigging blues/rock/indy musician I have toured while playing all forms of acoustic and rock genres and venues, from jazz to country to blues to classic rock. I can teach you any genre of music or method of guitar playing ...

About Chris

Hello! I’m Jeff, an experienced guitarist with 15 years of live performance experience and 7 years of teaching experience. I pride myself in my ability to make lessons as fun and informative as possible.

I customize my lessons to the student depending on their skill level/goals. So whether you want to shred solos, understand songwriting, or just want to be able to strum through your favorite songs, I can help you get there!

I like to find fun ways to teach songs and link it together with music theory, so that my students can play music as well as understand it. This can help you to figure out songs on your own in the future.

I specialize in teaching Blues, Jazz, Rock and Fingerstyle. All ages welcome!

Please message me if you are interested.

About Jeff
I am a professional guitarist and songwriter for one of the most renowned San Diego live bands. I have been teaching lessons for the last seven years and have performed professionally for 12. I currently have around 30 students at a local music school and play live several times a week.

Guitar students can expect to improve from week to week, with an ever growing understanding and appreciation for music. My teaching experience allows me to be aware of how students improve their playing with an emphasis on consistent progression and smart milestones that give students a feeling of accomplishment that minimizes frustration.

I tailor my lessons to the students skill level/interests. If you just want to have some fun learning to play chords, THAT’S OK! If you want to delve deeper into diatonic harmony, half diminished chords, and modal in
terchange, then let’s get down on it!

Some of the styles I regularly teach: Rock, Blues, Indie, Folk Alternative, Jazz, Raggae, R&B, Country

I teach lessons to all ages.

If any of this sounds interesting to you, don’t be shy! Send me a message, because I can’t wait to help you become a better musician!
