YOUR MUSIC:
Because this is a passion art, we will work with music that YOU LOVE, and that you can poor your passion into -- for children this can mean silly songs and your favorite cartoon and movie themes -- for adults this can be Led Zeppelin, thrash metal, Vivaldi, Muse, the
white stripes ... I can be a guide, but ultimately you CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE!

MY APPROACH:
is tailored to each student, as I get to know you, we will figure what your strengths are as a musician. My teaching is centered around developing skill from understanding -- TEACH A MAN TO FISH -- I want you to find the principals of playing RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME music, with EASE. My teaching style can be both analytic, intellectual, and conceptual as well as intuitive, spontaneous and creative -- as musicians work in both modes. I have had experience with Alexander technique, injury prevention and rehab, and Eurythmics, so you will have someone here to guide you toward good habits and physical awareness.

CORE:
After 3 - 6 months you can expect to have an intuitive understanding of fundamentals such as chord charts, standard notation, tablature, music theory fundamentals, basic scales and how different styles of music are built, healthy guitar technique, and a nuanced approach to your own learning process.

STYLE:
Each student will develop skills in multiple styles of their choosing -- that might be; intensive Classical training -- singing and songwriting -- finger picking -- rock and metal -- folk -- jazz -- latin -- blues -- etc. We will approach each style from the ground up, and find a way to bring your creativity and personality out. No dogma, no copy cats, just expression.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student should provide chairs, music stand, and own instrument -- I can provide a guitar for trying.

*** Specialties ***
Improvisation, beginning Jazz, Rock, beginner to advanced Classical and BASIC voice training, experience with pre-K and elementary level, as well as adults, and college bound level.

Through a combination of standard textbooks ("Pumping Nylon" by Scott Tennant, "The Christopher Parkening Guitar Method", and other graded classical studies), we will explore the basics of classical guitar method with a strong emphasis on technique and form. About Aidan
I have been playing guitar since I was 10 and loving music my whole life. I have been in numerous rock bands, high-school jazz band, classical guitar duos, trios, chamber ensembles, and even played mandolin in a bluegrass band. I received my Bachelor of Music at Guilford College as a student of Kami Rowan. During my third year of study there, I was nominated for the Guilford College Art Award as the outstanding student and performer in the music department. In February of 2010, I had the honor of being a member of the guitar orchestra during a performance of Shingo Fuji’s Concierto de los Ange
les, alongside soloist, Grammy winner, William Kanengiser. I recently completed my Master of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music where I studied with Jason Vieaux. There I was awarded the Rosalia Ablan Memorial Prize for my accomplishments on the guitar. In addition to guitar performance, I have studied music theory, jazz theory, and pedagogy extensively. I am a native of San Francisco and have been teaching privately since 2007. No matter what a student's interests are, I can give them a rock solid foundation in technique, performance, reading, and theory.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons I make it a priority to create an easy-going, non-intimidating environment, so that you, the student, can focus on your goals and learning, approach music at your own pace, and really look forward to coming in to lessons. Whether you are interested in electric, steel-string, or classical, Metallica, Mozart, or anything in between, I can teach you technique, musicianship skills, and songs that fit your personal interests.
For beginning students I like to teach a mixture of basic theory, music-reading, and chords/scales. Soon after, the student can begin to bring in songs that s/he is interested in, and I can start to build lessons around specific styles/pieces. I teach all levels and all ages, and I would love to share my passion and knowledge with you, and gain you skill and confidence on the guitar, as well as a deep understanding of music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room w/ seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical guitar, and am very familiar with the teachings of Aaron Shearer. His methods and practices provide the basis for how I teach technique and how i approach learning pieces. I also supplement his ideas with those of Pepe Romero, William Kanengiser, and Scott Tenant (particularly their views on technique).
I am also more than comfortable teaching pop/rock guitar on steel-string or electric, and TAB-ing/teaching songs the student brings in. Whether the student prefers classical or popular s/he will get a good foundation in music theory and music reading.

4 years of studying classical guitar at music school equipped with the fundamental skills to play and teach beginner to intermediate classical music. Students can expect to learn aspects of fingerstyle playing and left hand fretting technique by playing pieces from Bach, Villalobes, and Segovia.

About Rory
I've been playing guitar for over eleven years, teaching for seven, and have a Bachelor's in Music from the Thornton School of Music at University of Southern California. I've taught all ages and covered everything from theory to improvisation, transcription to technique.

My aim is to contribute to my students’ knowledge of music and technical ability on their instrument, as well as encouraging their passion and creativity. I tailor every lesson to each individual student, no two people learn at the same pace. Besides learning songs and scales, my students will learn effective methods of pr
actice, proper instrument and hand care, and other essential skills for an aspiring musician.

Another goal is to give my students the tools, motivation, and confidence to practice and pursue music on their way, outside of the classroom. I whole-heartedly encourage students to bring in music that interests them, although I also have a stockpile of popular and fun songs to pull from, each of which teaches different techniques at different levels.

Any time a student shows an interest in a new area or brings in music that’s unfamiliar to me, I take it as an opportunity to expand my own knowledge and skill. As such, I’ve learned and taught lessons on electric bass, ukulele, and keyboards as well as guitar and I’m comfortable in a multitude of styles: jazz, rock, classical, folk, funk, hip hop, reggae and more.

Most of all, I want to share my love of music with my students. I first connected with music because it brought me joy. Although I take music seriously, I also believe that learning, playing, and performing should be liberating and expressive.

My daughter has been learning guitar with Rory for over three years now. Couldn't have found a better instructor than Rory, he is the best guitar teacher out there. She really enjoys playing guitar and Rory has worked with her on sharpening her skills, she has become a good guitar player in such a short time.

Thank you Rory, you're the best.

About Ian
