My lessons are very student driven and revolve around developing students innate music abilities to help them connect and experience success as well as enriching their lives with music. In my lessons students will develop music appreciation skills by listening to music, understanding basic music theory concepts, growing a knowledge of historical awareness in music all alongside learning the instrument of their chosen preference. The pace set for the sessions is rather relaxed and is highly dependent on the student but, students are guided throughout the sessions to eventually achieve their goals. My main teaching approach is: Let me use my skills and knowledge to help figure out what works best for you!

I can help beginning students on bassoon learn the basics.

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
music, band, orchestra, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, string bass, piano, Percussion

Bassoon is based on a simple set of rules and techniques that must be learned and applied. I'm a professional teacher with a unique ability to perceive what students understand and how they understand, which I use to efficiently build students' knowledge, saving them both time and money.

About Joshua
I am a tutor who earned a music teaching degree, substitute taught, and didn't become a school teacher. I held professional tech retail jobs and am supplementing my life with my passion - education.

Whatever subject or instrument I teach, I celebrate students' successes; and I enjoy helping learners have new aha moments.

The majority of my students take guitar, bass guitar, or Spanish lessons. I am an educator and help my students learn other skills and knowledge sets too.

I went to Ohio State University for college, earned a BA in Music Education, and graduated Cum Laude. I also spent 4 years in the Ohio State University Marching Band.

Through my healing journey, I've developed patience, insight, and understanding for my students' learning processes.

I'm excited to help you incorporate new skills into your life!

In search of helping our 10 year old son build some self-confidence we sought out clarinet lessons this summer. He started playing in school last year, and it was something our reluctant son liked "enough" to want to build up some competency. Joshua has been amazing! He finds just the right amount of challenge to encourage my son to practice, but not get discouraged. My son looks forward to his lesson each week and told me that he isn't even sure he wants to switch to saxophone next year because he is having so much fun playing the clarinet. Joshua is amazing with children, and has spent time getting to know our kiddo and find out what will work best for him. Patient, calm, and inspiring--very talented instructor.

I whole-heartedly recommend Joshua for anyone of any age and any skill level who wants to enrich their life learning guitar. I appreciate the fact that he makes the time and has the patience to adapt to my needs. Joshua is flexible in scheduling - especially for those unforeseen incidents - which is appreciated.

Being an adult beginner with music lessons, Joshua eases my frustration on immediately wanting to play perfect notes and chords. I look forward to continuing lessons.

I am a double reed (oboe and bassoon) specialist and have played both for over 16 years. My instrument of choice was bassoon in college and I continue to play for community orchestras. I tutor the double reed students at Hughson High School and Ross Middle School during the school year. Proper bassoon embouchure, technique and selection and adjustment of reeds is something most public school teachers overlook. Trust a specialist!

I teach oboe primarily through the tried and true Rubank method and the Ferling studies. Students will learn how to properly care for the instrument, how to read music, music theory, instrument technique, practice techniques, ear training (how to play by ear), reed adjustment, and repertoire. I also employ custom exercises specifically for oboe to help my students progress the fastest.

Kyle has given me contra bass, aka upright bass, weekly lessons from August 2015 through May 2016. I have never played a string instrument prior to this, although I do play piano and have played the flute, bagpipes, and piccolo over the years. I did not need education in reading music.

Kyle was able to take me from sounding like a lower octave version of Jack Benny (a mid-20th century comedian famous for his howlingly horrid violin playing) to a level where I know how to hold the instrument and the bow, the fingerings, bowing technique, and how to get a very respectable sound from the instrument.

He also installed the strings when I received the new instrument, found a manufacturing flaw in the bridge height that the manufacturer subsequently paid to repair, and diagnosed a resonance issue with the instrument that was corrected with a balance weight on the string below the bridge.

Classically trained Bassoonist and Music Educator. I plan my lessons so students acquire the fundamental techniques and habits necessary for orchestral and wind band performances as well as solo and chamber repertoire.

About Antonio
Antonio first began his path in music on the alto saxophone and soon after took up the bassoon in high school. Since then, Antonio has studied bassoon under the direction of John Campbell, while pursuing a degree in Music Education.

As a future band director, Antonio's passion lies in working with young students to not only develop quality instrumental technique and expression, but also in the development of a strong character. He is staunchly dedicated to traditional and emerging methods of music education and pedagogy, and actively applies these principles to lessons with his students.

I have performed as a bassoonist with the CSULB Symphonic Band under Jeremy Arnold, CSULB Symphony Orchestra under Johannes Müller Stosch, and Bellflower Symphony Orchestra under Joseph Taylor.

His background in rehearsal techniques and broad musical knowledge have been indispensable during our rehearsals, and he has often pointed out ways in which I can fine tune the expressionistic or technical aspects of my playing. I am an active performer and teacher of bassoon, and am still an active learner on my instrument. Lessons with me are fun, engaging, and informative on this unique and often difficult instrument. I strive for my students to love the bassoon and enjoy working on their craft, whether a beginning band student or an aspiring professional. I earned my Bachelors of Music in Bassoon Performance from Sacramento State University and am currently earning my Masters of Music in Bassoon Performance at University of North Carolina, Greensboro. I also can help with reed making and adjusting, I make all of my own reeds and have for years.

About Jack
Jack Fanning has been teaching the bassoon since 2015. He is currently available to teach lessons online, or at the student’s home (and is ready and willing to travel within the NC Triad area). Jack aims to make each lesson fun, enjoyable, educational, and informative. He has helped middle school and high school students win positions in youth orchestras and honor bands in California and North Carolina.

Jack studied bassoon performance with Dr. David Wells in Sacramento, CA, and is currently studying bassoon performance with Dr. Michael Burns in Greensboro, NC. The tutelage of these great bassoonists fostered a love of music education and sharing the magic of bassoon playing with younger students.

Jack is an accomplished bassoon reed maker and makes his reeds available to purchase for his students. The importance of a good reed to
a young bassoonist is paramount; it is key to making great music and being successful from day to day.

I couldn't be more happy with the bassoon lessons that Jack has with my daughter. The online lessons are so convenient and a great way to work with this fantastic teacher. Jack's teaching style is extremely positive and supportive. He encourages my daughter to push out of her comfort zone and grow as a musician. The progress that she has made with him is incredible. He is very knowledgeable about music and integrates music theory, sight reading, and rhythm studies into their lessons. You can see that he loves playing and teaching the bassoon and that excitement carries over to my daughter. She never wants to put her bassoon down after their lessons! Lessons with Jack have been the best thing we've done to support her playing bassoon.

Jack is an AMAZING bassoon player and FANTASTIC instructor. He has taught my young son for over a year. We audited other music teachers who said they taught bassoon but really only knew the basics of teaching bassoon, their real expertise were other instruments. I was particularly impressed by Jack's ability to relate to my 11 year old son. He makes learning the bassoon not only informative but engaging and fun. Jack not only teaches classical bassoon music but is open to teaching modern pieces that my son wanted to learn. (I mean, how cool is it that my 11 year old kid busts out the Star Wars Cantina Song on his bassoon.) Jack plays bassoon regularly with orchestras which gives him real world experience that he passes on to his students. When I have seen him play professionally, it amazed me that someone so young could show such majority and skill with his musical instrument. Jack is also a great problem solver. When my son has problems with a piece, Jack is able to hear the problem and give my son techniques on how to fix them. When my son had problems with the instrument itself or the double reed, Jack was able to show my son HOW to fix them and not just fix it for my son himself. I highly recommend Jack has an instructor for students both young and old.

My daughter has been taking lessons from Jack since August 2017. Along with helping a student with performance, he educates the student on bassoon history and the unique qualities of the bassoon. He is great at starting at the student's level, but will challenging the student in subtle ways. At times he can be very entertaining. He shows his mastery of the bassoon (occasionally performing to demonstrate the nuances of a difficult piece of music). My daughter has enjoyed learning from Jack.

About Jaquain
Praised by the ‘Baltimore Sun,’ (Baltimore, MD) “ I relaxed in my seat as the singing tone of the bassoon rose above the orchestra. Sloan’s solo took the audience on an aural ride that seemed to defy the laws of time...”

Jaquain Sloan is a freelance bassoonist in the greater Los Angeles area. Before uprooting to Los Angeles, he freelanced in Baltimore, MD. There he performed with the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, Occasional Symphony Orchestra, and Symphony No. 1. An avid performer, he put on many solos recitals attracting audiences from pre-k to retirees introducing many of them to the sweet, dark, devil that is the bassoon.

Sloan strives to make the bassoon accessible to anyone who wants to listen. He has arranged many popular pop tunes for bassoon quartet and quintet in hopes listeners will see how versatile the bassoon can be. He ha
s performed various orchestral and chamber concerts at venues on both the east and west coasts including The Hollywood Bowl, Royce Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Bovard Auditorium, Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall, Hilda and Douglas Goodwin Recital Hall, Leith Symington Griswold Hall, Joe Byrd Hall, and the Cohen Davison Family Theatre.

Sloan is currently pursuing his Master in Bassoon Performance Degree at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles, CA under the tutelage of Shawn Mouser. He received his Bachelor of Music Degree from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University where he studied with Phillip Kolker. When he isn’t bandaging himself from reed making mishaps, he can be found singing with his award winning acapella group the SoCal VoCals, or with the Chancel Choir of Pasadena as a Bass Choral Scholar.
