I teach test taking skills with any subject

About Ilona
For my tutoring sessions I use skills that include goal-directedness, I teach how to organize learning in small steps and how to set them up; I always strive to motivate and engage my students to make the learning interesting and fun; I also use self-control skills to teach how to avoid distractions and I use different focusing strategies. I use positive mind set skills to teach how to use failures as a learning opportunities.

I have a Master's Degree (2012) in teaching English to speakers of other languages, and Bachelors in Music Education (2010), both from Florida Atlantic University, as well as degree in violin performance from Poland.
I studied piano in Poland for 10 years & taught both piano & violin for over 20 years. I also teach flute & cello for the past 5 years, as I studied them during my Music Education program.

I
teach music for over 24 years using the traditional and Suzuki methods. I am a fan of the Essential Elements 2000 for string instruments, and the Alfred's Piano Library for piano. Alfred's piano library can be used for any age as they also have books especially made for adult learners. I also like their music flash cards.
For teaching music theory I mostly used Master Theory.

I personalize every lesson, and always set goals for my students. Most of my violin students are members of the Florida Youth Orchestra as well as Gold Coast Youth Orchestra and my piano students participate in Pompano Beach competition and the annual Piano Guild auditions.
I teach any age and any level, and always stress that learning a new instrument is very similar to learning a new language, it needs a lot of patience, persistence and repetitions. My lessons are customized to my students needs, and are work in progress as they needs may change over time. I always remind my students that music can give them instant gratification when they learn to play favorite songs.
I always encourage my students to tell me about their music preferences, so I can incorporate them in their music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
All my tutoring sessions include reviews of previously learned material and if possible the use of technology. I use students books but often bring extra study materials if necessary.
All my lessons include: technique: I like to use the Finger Power for piano students and Essential Elements for my string students, and scales for both.
music theory: I use Master Theory or other books such as Hal Leonard's Piano Note spellers & Piano Music Theory books for younger ages, music flash cards to support learning notes and musical terminology, and of course the fun part performance.

Besides Essential Elements 2000 for strings I also use String Tunes and Fiddle Runners to add more fun to the lessons. For piano students I use Holiday Treats book, which comes in 2 different levels: Beginner & Intermediate, so my students have a new songs for a specific holiday.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I always bring violin with me to be able to show what I teach.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The students needs to have their books and assigned material ready for tutoring. Instrumental students needs to have their music books & instrument available as well as a pencil. I always stress with my students to be organized and prepared for their lesson, this way they will be able to focus better during the lesson. I bring my violin with me. I also ask that the room where the lesson takes place to be free of any distractions, such other siblings or any other noise. The quiet environment helps in faster learning.

*** Specialties ***
I tutor most K-12 subjects and prepare students to take ACT, SAT, GRE tests.
Music genres: Classical, traditional, Suzuki, Popular, Celtic, fiddle, Blues

Chris taught one lesson to my son, then he cancelled the following week's lesson and never returned numerous phone calls, emails, and text messages. He didn't respond, then the following week at our next scheduled instruction he called me 30 mins before the lesson asking if he could move the date.

Needless to say, it was very unprofessional of him, and we intended to end our relationship with him as my son's instructor.

The thing got worse when he proceeded to schedule my son for a weekly reoccurring lesson for the next year. I've had to manually cancel each lesson, at least until Jan 2015.

I would strongly warn you against signing up with Chris if you expect an instructor who is reliable and responsive to your communications. I'm sorry it didn't work out, but the other problem is that this was my son's first experience to music lessons, so it was a bad first experience.

We're giving 3 out of 5 stars since that seems fair. With regards to the lessons themselves, Chris certainly met our expectations with our son's violin lessons. However, with regards to communications and scheduling, it could have been much better. More than once my son was waiting on Skype after receiving the "You have upcoming lessons" email from TakeLessons. Chris needs to learn how to cancel the lessons ahead of time. He rarely responded to emails (was trying to get him to stop showing our email openly to all his other students, really needs to learn how to use BCC). He never returned phone calls. Due to the canceled lessons, our TakeLesson pay date came prematurely, and since I waited until our son's paid lessons were completed before paying for new ones, we got dropped from the schedule and lost our time slot. Too many frustrations led to finding a new teacher.

I am qualified to teach test preparation for the CBEST because I just took it this July and I was able to pass it on my first try. I received a score of 60 on the math section, a 50 on the reading section, and a 47 on the writing section. I also completed the test an hour and a half early. In order to pass the CBEST, you must have a combined total of 123. My combined score was a 157. I have tutored a CBEST student in preparation for the math section and her score went from a 28 to a 38 after only three lessons.

About Megan
I worked at a Kumon math and reading tutoring center for three years. I love helping children with their schoolwork, especially those in the elementary grades. I have worked one on one with students and with small groups of students. I recently graduated from Cal Poly Pomona as a Liberal Studies major and I am continuing my education to attain my Multiple Subject teaching credential. I would like to become an elementary school teacher in the future. I have tutored students as young as pre-K all the way through the eighth grade and I am very passionate about helping others.

Elementary Math
I have tutored high school students in math outside of the tutoring company I work at. I have taught students between the ages of 4 to 10 through both one on one instruction and group instruction. I have also taken classes at Cal Poly Pomona tha
t include Mathematical Concepts for Elementary School Teachers: Number Systems, Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Viewpoint: Algebra, and Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Viewpoint: Geometry. I am currently tutoring a second grader in adding and subtracting, two third graders in multiplication and division, and two sixth graders in pre-algebra. I have also tutored an eighth grader in math before.

Elementary (K-6th)
I am qualified to teach students at the elementary grade level because my Liberal Studies major at Cal Poly Pomona has given me the necessary background and skills to become an elementary school teacher. I have taken math classes at Cal Poly Pomona that are from a teacher's viewpoint. I am currently enrolled in classes that will go toward earning my teaching credential. I have worked with students between the ages of 4 to 10 in both math and reading through one on one instruction and group instruction. I have tutored many students at the elementary level. I have taught and tutored a three year old, two second graders, two third graders, one fourth grader, and four sixth graders. I have a very positive relationship with both my students and their parents. I like to have feedback from parents and be informed of how my students are doing in school. Many of my parents have told me about the heightened confidence they see in their children. When I tutor students, I like to bring in extra material for them so they can really understand whatever they are working on. I have many reading books, worksheets, and flashcards that I provide for my students.

Phonics
I am qualified to teach phonics because I have worked at a reading tutoring center for three years and have been able to help students between ages three to ten improve their reading skills. I taught a three year old to recognize all of the letters of the alphabet out of order and we are currently working on understanding all letter sounds. I use a lot of worksheets and repetition so students can recall what they have learned very quickly. I also like to use hands on activities and games.

Reading
I am qualified to tutor students in reading because I have worked at a reading tutoring center for almost three years. I have helped students learn to read by working with them through both one on one and group instruction. I have worked with reading students between the ages of three to 13. I really enjoy teaching students in the lower grades and seeing them grow from learning their ABCs, to knowing letter sounds, and then blending sounds to form words. Each of these steps is important for students to master so they can form a strong foundation and confidence in reading.

Study Skills
I am qualified to teach study skills because I have always been a very good student in school and have been able to maintain a high grade point average. I have learned how to manage my time and how to study for tests. I have never turned in a late assignment as I know my limitations and how to distribute my time to the tasks that need to be completed.

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lesson changes as students learn new material. For some of the students I have tutored, I have helped them sharpen their skills by revisiting topics. For other students, the lessons have been for test preparation or homework help. I like to use a lot of repetition because I feel that repetition allows students to really learn and understand what they are working on.

*** Specialties ***
I provide my students with many worksheets, resources, and books that will help them achieve their learning goals.

I tried different learning centers and other similar programs through the school to help my child meet her academic needs and improve her school performance, but she was still facing a lot of difficulties. I can honestly say that I prayed for a tutor/teacher like Ms. Megan. She is simply the best. She has such a positive and encouraging approach to teaching. This wonderful unique individual thinks outside the box. She was able to identify the areas that my child was having difficulties in right away. We dreaded the school year before meeting Ms. Megan. At the end of the school, my child received not only the usual attendance award, but I 'm so happy and proud to say that she also received 3 academic achievement awards. Ms. Megan truly has a gift for teaching. I Thank GOD my prayers were answered. :)

I have taught 30+ test prep students, ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, ASVAB, GED, TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, etc. Using my broad teaching expertise and coursework in mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry) English (reading, writing, grammar) and Science (biology, chemistry, physics), I have helped prospective university students (juniors, seniors and even sophomores) get the scores they need to gain acceptance to their top school choices. Let me show you how successful you or your child can be.

A recent success story from one of my students was an increase of 4 points on her ACT, for a composite of 30. That's 16 individual points within four subjects!

About Matthew
Dear Parents and Students,

May I be a personal tutor for you or your child? I have been successfully tutoring for over 12 years. I have great references, and I am one of the top tutors because I am so easy to work with. I teach in person, or via TakeLessons classroom, telephone, Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, Join.me, Appear.in, Screenhero (remote desktop, screen sharing) interactive whiteboards, as well as email attachments (PDF, Word, Excel, etc.) I graduated with honors, Summa Cum Laude from Case Western Reserve University, where I made the Dean's List. I also earned a Provost Academic Scholarship for my excellent test scores, including 34 in ACT mathematics and 780 in SAT mathematics.

In addition to teaching for Cleveland schools, I currently teach 20 private sessions each week, 1st through 12th grade, as well as college stud
ents and business professionals. I have also served on the faculty at Cuyahoga Community College.

I am patient, friendly and many students tell me that I explain concepts more effectively than their teachers. I am available weekdays or weekends, days or nights, throughout the entire year. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have regarding my experience and teaching methods. While it should go without saying, I have a clean background that has been verified by the FBI and BCII. Let me know if you would like to set up an introductory lesson to design a customized strategy. There is no obligation to continue unless a customer is 100% satisfied.

I am one of the Top Five Tutors for:
1. most diverse subject matter
2. widest student age range
3. farthest geographical regions
4. largest client base
5. most hours taught monthly

Test Preparation Help

About Zaky
Hi, my name is Zak! Music is a beautiful thing. It has the so much power. It can be used to send a message, move and inspire people. Music can impact emotions, it is a beautiful and powerful thing!

Music, and teaching have always been a big passion in my life. The ability to take knowledge of a subject that you have, and show, share, and shape someone and pass on that knowledge to them. It is an amazing feeling. I am a passionate, and caring instructor. My teaching style is encouraging, motivating, and educational. I fully believe that you can do anything you set your mind to, and I use that by showing my students that I believe in them.

I use a curriculum that was taught to me, and has been used in schools and universities. This curriculum fits all age groups and skill levels. Starting with Rock, moving to Funk, ending with Jazz.
When drumming playing with music, learning improvisation, and playing by ear is important. I also focus on this, having students learn their favorite songs, and learn to play with new music as well. This keeps students interested, and adds a fun personal element to their lessons. I also have implemented use of a teaching app, so while practicing if students have a question they can ask me right then so to not forget, and I can give feedback. It also has a practice tracker tool. If you have any questions feel free to email me.

I look forward to meeting you, and helping you reach your music goals!

Zaky is great with my son who has a history of brain injury which causes him to have short term memory problems. In just a few weeks he has much more confidence in himself and is even a slight bit ahead in band class. He is now able to help some of the other students which he loves. There are very few things that at school that don't overwhelm him, and Zaky has helped him find success in music.
