I teach beginning to advanced levels, including music theory, proper hand and finger technique and ear training. Pick the style of guitar playing you want to learn and I'll teach you how to perfect your abilities and have fun with it at the same time!

About Steven
Have you always wanted to learn how to play the piano, guitar or electric bass? Or maybe you've just felt like brushing up your musical knowledge and playing skills? Now’s your chance to fulfill those dreams!

About Me: San Francisco Bay area pianist/guitarist/bassist; I've been playing music for over 50 years. I'm classically trained with a solid foundation and knowledge of music theory, and have over 40 years experience teaching, recording and performing. I have done session work and/or performed with members of Journey, Santana, Jackson Browne, Eddie Money, The Doobie Brothers and Greg Allman to name a few, and am currently teaching piano, theory and bass to Mike Dirnt, the bassist for Green Day. Let me take my education and experience and pass them on to you!

My main goal as a music instructor is to pass along my love and kno
wledge of playing music to my students, always vigilant for sharing shortcuts that will help the student to achieve their lesson goals faster. Some teachers teach only out of books. I am not such a teacher. Books solve the problem of learning music in generalizations and by their very nature, cannot take into consideration personal issues a student will encounter.

Most students are able to learn enough of the necessary mechanics at the first lesson to actually play something before they leave that lesson. This is important because they realize that playing music IS possible. I always enjoy the look on their face when they realize they have actually “played” their instrument at their first lesson.

I am not the sort of teacher who yells and screams if the student comes in unprepared. I realize that people come to me for a variety of reasons and I work with them with whatever they bring in. I am patient and if a student is not understanding a certain aspect, I bring into play alternate approaches. Not everyone assimilates information in the same way. Learning music should be an enjoyable adventure for the student and I venture to say that my students enjoy coming to their lessons. We have fun, and we learn.

My current rates are $40 per half hour, $60 per 45 minutes and $80 per hour, and believe me... you will get your money's worth! Also I should note that due to my current students, plus teaching at a private school in Sausalito and recording sessions, my time constraints only allow me to teach lessons out of my home studio in Alameda. Hopefully this will work for you as well!

About Mark
I have played on tour with several professional bands, playing rock, pop, blues, African, metal, and country. I now perform live in various bands and record original music as often as possible. My music has gotten airplay in many countries.

I started playing guitar at age 9, and recorded 2 singles in the LA area by age 14. I was a music major throughout High School and College. I also learned a lot by educating myself at the Brand Library in the Los Angeles Area, which specializes in the arts. I specialized in advanced music theory and improvisational techniques.

I have enjoyed teaching music lessons since 1978.

I custom tailor a lesson plan to fit your individual needs and goals! I can teach you songs you'd like to learn instantly when I hear them on your iPod, mobile phone, cassette or CD that you bring in. I ca
n explain musical theory and concepts many different ways, to make sure you understand them. I am very friendly and patient.

Sometimes I might inject humor into the learning process to make it an enjoyable learning experience, and to help you remember the important things.
I love the satisfaction of seeing my students grow musically proficient and and seeing the JOY that it brings them. Many of my students have gone on to become professional. I am well-versed and well-equipped to teach many styles: Rock (including all sub-genres...Tribal Ambient neo Punk, etc), Pop, Blues, Jazz, Alternative, Country, R&B, New Age, Ambient, Electronic, Metal (and a few plastics and wood as well).

*** Lesson Details ***
I will develop a personal lesson plan for each individual student. During your lessons, I might cover topics ranging from learning how to play, starting from the basics (if you are a beginner), to choosing music that will inspire you on your level, to improving your technique, ear-training, music reading (if that's what you'd like), reading and understanding tabs (if that's what you'd like), knowing what it is that makes certain chords and notes sound good together for writing your own music, as well as guitar maintenance and adjustments, getting a good tone, amplifier settings, effect pedals (settings & placing them in the most effective order), recording tips, and where to get a decent pizza. Haha.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room or Studio, both very comfortable. Amplifiers, guitars, effects pedals, bass, ukulele, balalaika, drum set, PA system and recording equipment. This is a very serene and peaceful environment with no distractions!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide guitar, bass, or ukulele and amplifier when necessary, teaching tools. The student provides their guitar and paperwork I give them.

I currently have 5 albums out under my name. A song of mine is on a major new age compilation, and several of my songs have been played on the radio in several countries, and several internet radio programs throughout the world. I have played on other people's albums...some of which have received major radio airplay in Europe, and gone to #1!

Been working with Mark for 2 years now - electric and acoustic; it's time I share just how much learning and fun is going on! Some lessons we pick apart songs to understand how/why they work. Some lessons are thematic - modes, signature changes, turnarounds, etc. Crazy impressive guitar skills, explains theory and conjures up relevant examples, very adaptable, and extremely patient. From Classical to Jazz, and lots of World Music in between.
Guitar was my main instrument until I began playing Bass in bands in 2000. Since then Guitar is still my main 'go-to' for practice at home, teaching music theory, and composition.

About David
Hi there, and thanks for viewing my TakeLessons profile! I am excited to be a part of the team in Berkeley, CA.

I started teaching lessons while in music school for Classical Guitar in 1996. From 1998 onwards, I played with a variety of musicians from Africa and Latin America, as well the as great American traditions of gospel, funk, jazz, and bluegrass. All the while, I continued to study music theory and composition, on my own and in private lessons with both well-known players and local professionals. Flamenco and Indian Classical music have also been great interests which I am still involved with.

Though guitar is generally my "go-to" instrument, I often use a MIDI keyboard for composition, and studied/performed on bass for 10 years. The last few years, I have begun to develop my voice as well.

Since 2006, I have been teachi
ng music theory and composition at Ex’pression College in Emeryville. This is a digital production environment for the arts, and my students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are musicians/aspiring musicians, and some are primarily interested in working with technology; but all are audio enthusiasts and love music!

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether you are a complete beginner or have been playing gigs for years, are very young or old, I have something to offer you!

How we structure lessons depends in part on you and your goals, as well as your learning style. Having taught music for over 15 years, I have a large amount of resources at my disposal, and can either teach from a method book, or a variety of materials, some of which are my own creations.

I also like to use technology as a teaching aid, and can show you how to use your own computer, keyboard, or music production application (garageband, etc) to practice and create music at home. Another thing that I offer is to make recordings of key parts of the lesson, either as an audio or video file, or both. These can be shared with you through email, dropbox, or a flash drive if you bring one along to your lesson.

Please contact TakeLessons if you have any further questions! I look forward to meeting and working with you or your child.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio: Front room with computer station, guitars, music stand. Waiting area with couches and table, and parents can sit in on lessons. Street parking available, no pets.

College: practice rooms and classrooms available with computers and MIDI controllers.

*** Specialties ***
On guitar and bass, I have experience in world music including Africa, Latin America, and Flamenco. I also love American traditional music, including funk, jazz, rock, and gospel. I specialize in teaching music theory and composition, no matter what instrument. Rhythmic concepts applied to any instrument are a favorite topic.

About Greg
I started playing guitar in the 5th grade and in middle school began playing in rock groups. At the beginning of high school, I started teaching in some of the local music stores in the area. While wanting more from my playing, I started classical guitar lessons with an Andre Segovia student, Rani Cochran, and soon started lessons from Warren Nunes, a top jazz guitarist in the Bay Area. While continuing to take lessons in both types of music, I majored in Music at the local college. There I played in the jazz band and in guitar ensembles. After receiving my A.A. degree, I took classical guitar lessons with Larry Ferrara at the Conservatory of Music in San Francisco. At this point I transferred to San Jose State University and received a B.A. in guitar performance and a B.A. in Psychology, graduating with honors. My latest performing exp
erience has been playing in the worship band at my church for the past several years. I enjoy teaching guitar and sharing what I’ve learned over the years of playing. We all never stop being students and learning new things on our instrument.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are provided in a comfortable, fun environment and are private and on a weekly basis. Initially the student will complete a questionnaire before the first lesson to allow me to better understand what experiences the student has had with the guitar and with music in general. Additionally, I try to find out what groups and guitarists he or she likes. Finally, discuss what goals the student has or put another way, what he or she wants to do with the guitar. When we have completed the first lesson, I will better understand what the student’s playing level is and be able to provide a lesson plan based on that level and current experience. The lessons are tailored to each student’s capability and desire to play/practice. The lessons will be challenging but not “out of reach”. The student will feel successful and see the difference in playing within a relatively short time.

I will assess the student’s progress each week, by reviewing the previous week’s work. Based on the student’s progress, I will advance to new material or stay within the same material. The student and I will agree on how much time the student will devote to practicing each week. The student will keep a three ring notebook for adding handouts as they are given. I usually use a guitar book, to have structure, along with supplementary material that fills in the gaps. It is vital to practice on a regular basis in order to improve.
I provide teaching with patience and motivation. Being a parent of a child with ADHD (I homeschooled for one year), I incorporate learning from my parental experiences into lessons as needed. There have been several studies done that show how early music lessons have longtime benefits.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio lessons are taught in a music room upstairs with large windows facing the street with guitars, amps, a computer, stereo and seating. The house has 3 cats which are kept separate from lessons. Street parking and/or driveway if needed.

*** Specialties ***
I've taught rock, blues, jazz, classical, contemporary Christian, and music theory. I try to get my students to play along with CD's and listen to others playing what they want to learn. I draw material from the hundreds of books I have collected over the years.

I have been teaching the guitar 8 years. I'm building a strong foundation of techniques.I specialize in Blues, classical &typically use MelBay books and also have the following to use the Sheet music.
In addition,I emphasize how to read a good sight reading.

About Esther
I'm Esther, a very enthusiastic musician. I started out teaching myself piano and singing in a choir at the age of 9. I moved to the U.S. in 1992 and studied music for 10 years receiving my B.M. & M.M in music at California State University of Sacramento. I studied and trained with Claudia Kitka & Jackie Victorino for voice and Kirsten Smith, Joan McDe, & Angel Mamn for piano. I have performed many solo concerts in the U.S. as well as South Korea.

I find a student's strengths and weaknesses using various ways to encourage each student. I am very patient, kind, flexible, and enthusiastic and I love working with children as much as adults. I strongly support basic skills: sight-reading, pitch and tone.

I have 30 years experience teaching kids and adults private piano and 14 yrs voice coaching (early period to contemporary). I sp
eak fluent Korean and English.

*** Lesson Details ***
My objectives: to help students powerfully communicate through the essence of music and aid the development of children and adults by finding their strengths and weaknesses and to develop their skills and show their musical talents. I emphasize basic skills, good sight-reading, and Solfege skills (Do-Re-Me...etc), vocal technique, vocal performance, and Alexandria technique. Students participate in their own recital and show their musical talents.

Lessons are held at either your home, or mine using composers from various time periods that speaks to the individual student.
Also,I do prefer to work a weekly student.
A beginner lesson may be 10-15 min. for warm-ups and scales, 10-15 min. theory and 10 min. playtime. In three to six months the student will be able to read sheet music and should be able to perform simple songs.

An intermediate lesson is longer, 45-50 min., with more focus on music from a specific chosen time-period. A specialty is preparation for voice and piano auditions for entering college.

I enjoy teaching children from age 5 up to adults. I also can teach beginner guitar.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, electronic keyboard, guitar.

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***
I teach the basic skills very strongly, and also encourage students and, challenge them, as well.
I also have new techniques for teaching voice and piano.

My approach to music education can be summed up in this favorite quote by composer Robert Schumann - "It is music's lofty mission to shed light on the depths of the human heart".

I offer all aspects of music education including guitar, bass, ukulele, arrangers piano and recording technology and I promise accelerated results.

I am a an honor graduate of the prestigious Berklee College Of Music in Boston. During my studies there, I was awarded, for three consecutive years, high achievement scholarships.

At Berklee, I started my career in music education with being offered the position of Ear Training Laboratory Manager. Later, I put together an ensemble class for four guitars and rhythm section called 'The Baroque Jazz Quartet' which was added to the advanced electives offered by Berklee.

I'm also known for leading a workshop c
alled the "Music Of Life Seminar". This work originated out of my collaboration with cellist and Senior Lecturer in Public Leadership, Ronald A. Heifetz who is the co-founder of the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard University.

I've studied privately with world-class musicians, the likes of; Tuck Andress on guitar, Kit Walker on piano. Herb Pomeroy for arranging, Mike Gibbs for composition, Mick Goodrick on guitar (ECM recording artist), the legendary Lenny Breau on guitar, Kai Eckhardt on bass, and in my formative years, Jazz great Charlie Byrd, among others.

I have played key roles in public performances with such notables as; acclaimed actress and singer Jill Eikenberry, keyboardist Raphael of the ‘Music To Disappear in’ fame, Grammy Award winning pianist Laura Sullivan, new age singer Sophia, among others. I have also performed in notable venues on both the East and West coast such as the Angelico Hall and the Berklee Performance Center.

I have co-produced, with producer Wayne Wallace of Bon Vivant Productions (Machete' Ensemble and Pete Escovedo Orchestra), my own album of instrumental music through the label Delvian Records called “Motion” were I was joined by some top players from the music community.

“When my students experience a greater and more inclusive sense of humanity and of their own and others beauty, I am filled up with joy. Imparting the energy and feeling of music creation is a shared experience of freedom unlike anything else. This is why I have a passion for music and music education”.

I highly recommend guitar lessons with Gary Norman. Gary is a tremendously talented guitar player and an equally capable, creative and thoughtful teacher. His knowledge of music theory is outstanding – a testament to his graduate degree from the Berklee College of Music, one of the premier music colleges in the country. Additionally, he is very creative in his teaching methods as he tailors his lessons to the learning style of the student. For me, I required assistance with understanding the basic elements and timing of a composition before I could move on to the rhythm and strum patterns and ultimately the melody and words. Most importantly, Gary is patient and attentive which makes learning or mastering your guitar stress free. Overall, my lessons have been well worth the time and investment - I'm a much better and more informed player now that I have been lucky enough to study with Gary.

I went to Garry for his high level of knowledge of jazz harmony and wasn’t disappointed. He broke down my questions into simple understandable terms and really cleared the fog for me. Garry is also a great player—I could sit and listen to his solo guitar arrangements all day!

Hello my name Is Ryan Pocan. I have been playing musical instruments since my early childhood. I specialize in acoustic and electric guitar. I love rock, blues and country music. I have played in multiple bands and am currently playing in a house blues band at a local club. I am also a songwriter and am currently working on a solo country blues album. I love teaching guitar and I am very calm, patient and understanding. I like to know what students are looking to learn from guitar lessons. If its just learning some basic chords and single notes to play or learning to eventually play in a band I can help! I like to see how students learn and will adjust my lesson plans based on your learning abilities. Looking forward to hearing from you!

I am a very patient artist, musician, acoustic guitar player and electric bass player. For guitar my lessons are a focus on chords and rhythm. Gypsy Jazz “le pompe” technique. Arpeggios and chord structure integration. Use of metronome to build and understand timing. How to read Chord charts and tablature. My lessons are great for a beginner to understand their instrument and how they can become an effective player in a band or ensemble. These lessons are great for all styles of music with a specialization in Gypsy Jazz.

About ALEXANDER
I have been playing music for 25 years.
During this time, I focused mainly electric bass but in the last 6 years I've focused on the Acoustic Guitar and play rhythm guitar, in a very busy World Fusion Flamenco Gypsy Jazz band, based in the SF Bay Area. I have learned a sure way to develop the building blocks for playing music. A way to practice and retain the information that you want to learn and quickly advance in your musical passion. I personally use these techniques and want to share them with you. Through patience and determination I will help you discover how to practice, develop technique and then enjoy and play music. I will answer your questions about your guitar from the simple to complex.
If you want to learn Gypsy Jazz, chords, rhythm and technique, how to play Blues, Rock, Funk or Reggae, or how to read chord charts and ta
blature, I want to help.
I am always excited to work with beginners, so if you are very new to your instrument we can discuss the geography and mechanics of it as well. We will start with the basics then build upon ideas that will give you a holistic understanding of the guitar and how to play music.

"Practice makes perfect" but you need to know "what" and "how" to practice, too make the most of your time.

I would not say that it is easy to learn how to play music or play guitar but that it is completely worth the time that you devote to it.

Music, is a gift that will always give back, you give it to yourself and then share it with your friends and loved ones.
Music, you will have it for life.

Check out the music that I play.

5 Reasons Why All Guitarists Should Learn Music Theory
Some guitarists have a lot of excuses when it comes to learning music theory. Guitar teacher Zachary A. shatters these excuses, busts a few myths, and shares why music theory is so important for guitarists after all... Music theory is a vast, almost unending, amount of knowledge. Many of music's greats studied and had schooling for decades. In all honesty I do not believe that you ever really finish studying, at least when you are dedicated and when you have the desire to learn music. The
Guitar for Kids: How to Help Your Child Love the Guitar
Many parents aren't sure how to best support their child in learning a new instrument. Guitar teacher Dylan P. shares his tips for parents to encourage their children to fall in love with the guitar... You can’t teach a child to love the guitar. You can lead them there, but they have to find it themselves. For a kid, guitar is a hard instrument to play. They have to dig their fingers into steel strings, make indents, and get calluses. They have to understand that each note has a letter, ea
Guitar Theory Basics: Understanding Keys
Curious about keys? Guitar teacher Alexander A. breaks down the guitar theory behind understanding keys... What key am I in? For most of the music we play this simple question yields a simple answer. I think the REAL question here is “why.” Why is a piece of music considered to be in the key of G major, or A minor, or any other key? I was in my 3rd semester of Jazz Harmony at Berklee when the instructor stumped the entire class with this question. I think the answer will surprise you. The
