About Glynis
Glynis has been reading music since before she knew how to read words. Her mother started teaching her piano lessons at age 3, and she started taking voice lessons at age 7. She learned from an early age to practice every day. She has taught all levels and ages of piano and voice for many years. Glynis specializes in jazz voice, but has a very strong classical and musical theatre background. She is an arranger, composer, educator, and singer. She received her AA in Professional Music from SWCC (school for music vocations), her BA in Jazz Studies: Vocal Performance at CSU Sacramento, and her Masters in Jazz Studies: Vocal Performance at the Bob Cole Conservatory at CSU Long Beach. She teaches college and high school vocal jazz ensembles as well as many private students in many areas of music.

My teaching philosoph
y is to have a safe, positive, fun, and effective learning environment for all of my students. I believe it is important to be a well rounded musician, therefore I love my students to have a solid understanding of what they are doing. I strongly encourage all of my students to learn theory along with piano or voice, so they understand what they are doing. Each student is unique, therefore each student has a different lesson plan. I do expect that my students will practice during the week in order to grow, since this helps them reach their goals. I do let students pick most their own repertoire, since it is very important for them to be motivated and enjoy their assignments during the week. I can teach from early Baroque music to modern day and everything in between. Music is expression, therefore I believe it is very important for my students to love what they are working on.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons are in my house with my upright Yamaha piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring a keyboard, but it is necessary to have a piano or keyboard at home to pracitce on if you are a piano student.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz voice, with a strong background in classical and musical theatre. I also specialize in piano, music theory, songwriting and arranging.

Glynis is the best teacher! As an adult student, I have unhappy memories of childhood instructors with punishing demeanors, who would give you a hard time with every mistake. Glynis is the most supportive, encouraging teacher I've ever had. I especially appreciate her rigorous background (Master's Degrees in music, a lifetime of piano and music theory) and her familiarity with the pieces I'm interested in learning (Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, Bach, Chopin). She has introduced pieces to me that I hadn't heard before, that I now love to play. It's so nice to be able to sit at the piano and play something that actually sounds like an adult playing!

Glynis is very adept at tailoring her teaching methods to what I need on that particular day. Sometimes I haven't had a chance to practice as much as I'd like, and she is very patient, helping me based on where I am in that moment. When I do have the time to work more diligently on a piece, she listens thoughtfully, praising the good parts and offering gentle suggestions on how I could improve. She sometimes will paint visual pictures for me of how the music should sound ("make it sound like children running through a meadow"), which is silly but also useful! Glynis knows how to bring out the best in my playing, and shows genuine enthusiasm when I master something hard. My playing has dramatically improved over the past few months, and I've really enjoyed spending time with Glynis at the piano.

I'd recommend Glynis to any adult looking to improve their piano skills. She is absolutely fantastic.

Glynis is able to not only quickly assess where a student is at in his or her skill level, but also where that will fit with what the student's goals are for music education. She easily and smoothly integrates both practice and theory into the lesson while incorporating fun at the same time!

About Yolande
My given mame is Yolande but most people know me as Yoly.
I was born in London, England where I began my first years of intense piano study with the Royal College of Music.

Growing up immersed in a family of the fine arts, a passionate path to encompass all creative outlets has been inevitable. In 1986 I emigrated to the United States, where my love for the piano in particular led me to pursue and complete a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in piano studies at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. In 2000 I moved to Californa and began my full time piano teaching career.

I currently reside in Burbank, California, where I offer lessons to all ages and levels at my private studio. I am a member of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers, Music Teachers National Association of California and National Guild of
Piano Teachers. Through these associations, I am able to offer my students the opportunity to participate in the Certificate of Merit program and/or the National Guild of Piano Teachers Auditions as well as to perform in competitions, concerts and at my own private group recitals. I feel truly blessed to be able to use my gift of creating and teaching music to help enrich the lives of others. During my 15 years of teaching I have had a wide variety of students that continuously inspire me to keep growing on all levels. Alongside my full time teaching career, I continue to follow my passion and love for my own artistic development through song writing, musical composition, poetry, writing and art.

~Lesson Plan~

Lessons are structured specifically to cater the needs and desires of each individual student. I always create a positive environment in which the student feels comfortable enough to ask questions. Mistakes are all part of the learning process and it is important that my students do not feel pressured or embarrassed about not being perfect. As individuals we are free to learn at our own unique pace.

I recommend a 30 minute lesson for the younger student who is not involved in an examination process. Even 30 minutes can be overwhelming for some children and especially beginners, but our time is divided equally among technical, practical and theoretical exercises. For the older and more advanced players 45 to 60 minute lesson are suggested.

~Studio Equipment~

I have a beautiful conservatory grand Estonia piano as well as a Korg Triton 88 key weighted electronic keyboard.

I am 38 and started taking lessons from Yoly in 2012. I’m not sure if I can adequately summarize why taking lessons from Yoly is an overall uplifting experience but I will try.

Yoly’s teaching style or teaching method is not the typical one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, her style/method is personalized to the needs and desires of each individual student. Because she takes the time to listen and understand what it is you want to achieve with piano, she is able to tailor your lesson time so it will be of most value to you. One attribute important to me that she encompasses and reflects throughout her personalized teaching style is her patience. She instructs and guides with persistence but also with kind patience. She encourages without being pushy and she has the unique ability to motivate you just by her being present. It is obvious Yoly enjoys sharing her gift because she uses her knowledge to teach with enthusiasm and encouragement.

I was lucky to also learn a bit of piano theory from Yoly, which I found to be extremely helpful by instilling a balanced understanding of the piano, piano playing and music which in turn lead to an understanding of why it is necessary to practice scales!

I currently live in San Diego but if I am ever scheduled to be in the LA area, I am sure to schedule a lesson with her. Basically, the bottom line is - Yoly is an inspiration. Anyone who begins to take lessons from Yoly will quickly find out just how fortunate they have become.

About Matthew J
I have been playing guitar for 14 years and teaching guitar and bass for 7 years. I have worked as a private and group guitar instructor at several music education establishments in the Chicago, Los Angeles and in Eugene, Oregon as well. I have also worked as a band coach for youth groups, where I taught them cover songs, helped them write their own songs and prepared them for live performances.
I studied at Columbia College Chicago majoring in Classical Guitar.
I started taking private guitar lessons as a teenager for several years and played in my high school jazz band along with original rock bands. While in high school, I was able to study with popular Chicago rock virtuoso guitarist Kevin M. Buck, where I first learned music theory and was inspired to be more studious with the guitar.

I have performed in rock/modern ban
ds for 12 years as an electric guitarist and also for 4 years as a solo acoustic guitarist mixing Bossa Nova, Classical Guitar and original compositions into my performance repertoire.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a patient teacher that's passionate about guitar and helping students reach their musical goals whether they are casual players or serious musicians. For beginners, I use Hal Leonard instructional guitar books along with paper handouts and sheet music. I believe it's important for everyone to learn the fundamentals of music to create a strong base of skills in order to continue playing and learning music throughout one's life. For more experienced players, I like to teach various modern rock/pop songs, classical guitar songs, picking patterns, finger picking patters, improvisation, scales and music theory. I teach nylon string acoustic, steel string acoustic guitar and electric guitar and bass
I believe the most basic goal for a guitar student is to be able to play a song in it's entirety, whether it's by themselves or with other musicians/music students. I believe that some of the most important music skills are learned while actually playing with other musicians. It is crucial when learning an instrument to be able to play in 'real time'; playing music with a steady sense of rhythm.

*** Specialties ***
I teach Classical Guitar, Brazilian Jazz, bass guitar, rock, pop, blues, funk and folk guitar using method books, sheet music and guitar tablature.

About Jeremy
Hi! My name is Jeremy. I started playing guitar at the age of 14 and by 16 I knew I wanted to play music for a living. I played in bands all through high school and studied music in college, graduating from Azusa Pacific University in 2013 with a Bachelor's in guitar performance. In May 2017 I will complete my Master's in guitar performance, also at APU. I have had the opportunity to study with great teachers including Tom Hynes (Kim Richmond big band, Disneyland), Steve Cotter (Joey DeFrancesco), and Adam Hawley (Jennifer Lopez, Backstreet Boys, Lalah Hathaway)

I'm currently a professional musician, playing guitar and keys. I have been very fortunate to perform or tour with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Ethan Bortnick, Martha Reeves, and Melissa Manchester. I gig regularly with corporate/wedding bands and perform in many styles inclu
ding: pop, funk, blues, R&B, jazz, gypsy jazz, Latin rock, solo guitar, classical, and Christian worship music. I have also played in pit orchestras for musical theater and done sidelining work on the pilot episode of a TV show.

I started giving private lessons in 2012 and have taught guitar and piano to students from age 8 to 45, all skill levels. Looking forward to hearing from you!

About Lance
Lance is available for in studio lessons, ready to help you conquer all of your singing goals. Lance has been singing for the last 17 years and teaching since 2013.

Besides teaching, Lance works as an actor and songwriter in OC and LA. He has been featured in productions such as Les Miserables, Bonnie and Clyde, Pirates of Penzance and many others. He is also currently working on his EP, slated to be released by the end of the year.

Although having a classical background in his vocal study, Lance comes at each student with a fresh slate and tailors every aspect of the lesson to the students needs. Everything from warm ups and exercises to song selection. Every student has their own plan that they can work at their own pace.

Lance attended Fullerton College and received his AA in Theatre Arts. While he was receiving his educati
on, he worked closely with the schools music department and performed with their Chamber Chorale, and with the "Cabana Boys" a full band with brass section that specialized in jazz, island, and rock music, performing at venues such as the opening ceremonies for the NAMN trade show.

After graduation, he continues to pursue learning to hone his craft, attending seminar with groups such as the Institute of Vocal Advancement and taking classes at The Songwriters School of Los Angeles.

No matter your prior training and experience level, Lance will bring all of his knowledge and tools to bear to help you reach your singing goals.

About Christina
My name is Christina and I am very passionate about the vocal arts, specifically Opera. Opera was a surprise in my life that I discovered in college. It moved me to a point where I knew it was what I wanted to pursue. Though singing classically takes great patience, discipline, and perseverance, that 5 minutes on stage projecting pure vocal freedom and expression make it well worth it. The classical technique can provide a great foundation to healthy singing, which can ensure a long vocal life.
Along side opera, I believe basic knowledge in piano is extremely beneficial in improving musicality and an understanding of each piece. Piano greatly improves sight reading and ones ability to learn music quickly and efficiently. It can allow one to develop an understanding of harmony and context within each unique piece of music.
I have recent
ly started teaching and would love to help and guide those interested in music, specifically classical voice, opera, musical theater, and piano. I would love to share the great joy it brings me with others and pass down what I have learned over the years. I have completed courses in music pedagogy and education alongside my degree, and believe in shaping my lessons around each individual's learning style so that each student may continue to grow while having fun.

About Kevin
I'm a full-time musician, recording artist, and studio drummer who has been studying and playing for over 17 years.

I played in the UCLA jazz and latin jazz programs, as well as in the UCLA marching band. Since then I've been a part of a group called Sure Sure. I write, record, and perform live all of our drum and percussion parts; we currently have 140,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

I like to tailor your lesson to whatever your goals are. I can teach you rudiments, we can learn one of your favorite songs, or I can show you exercises to improve your skill. I'm happy to talk about your drumming goals and then create a lesson plan to help you get there.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Kevin has been teaching my daughter Ellie for 9 months now. I found him through an old UCLA friend who's also part of the music scene here in LA. Ellie started as a percussionist in her middle school concert band and used to bang around on the set after rehearsals, but now that she's in 7th grade she decided to join the jazz ensemble. So we wanted to get her proper training on the drum kit. She always looks forward to her sessions with Kevin (we try to fit in a weekly session around club soccer and chess - yes, I'm breeding a Renaissance Woman), and she has seen astronomical growth in her abilities since she started with him last summer. As a musician myself, I can tell you that Kevin is a consummate drummer (check out his band Sure Sure!!) and teacher, not to mention a responsible (and hilarious) young man. He really emphasizes control and syncopation with Ellie, and her band teacher has been super impressed with her growing talents. Rumor has it she's even getting a drum solo at the spring concert...

Hello my name is Dakota Daugherty and I am currently a full time student at the California State University of San Bernardino for saxophone performance. I have about 13 years of playing experience and will be pursuing music through graduate school. I have musically grown so much in the last few years and I realize that because music is so important to me, I want to help share it and keep it alive.

I want to help beginning and intermediate saxophone players who are interested in music learn it in a way that does not intimidate them. We grow best when we love what we do, so I want my students to enjoy each lesson so they can't wait to open their case again. At the same time our goal is to understand how to practice smart and be self-dependent learners.

I will help with whatever aspect of playing may need it, whether it is technique (bre
athing, articulation, fingers, embouchure), reading, theory, or even listening. I will also help with any specific music you might be working on, such as a piece for a performance or audition. I want to stress that our focus will depend on the goals and needs of each individual student. Further details can be discussed before or at the first lesson. I'm eager to teach so please don't hesitate to contact me. I am not selective to age either. If you are in the area and are in need of some instruction I am here for you!
