I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of them had fun while learning and improving on their instruments.

I am very enthusiastic and can teach students how to read. If they do not want to read music, they can learn to play by ear. I can also show them where to put their fingers. During piano lessons, I often accompany students on guitar and suggest a scale for improvisation, so they can play the blues. During drum lessons, I often play bass so they can learn to groove.

Most excellent first guitar lesson to where we actually played a song together. I'm blown away. What fun! I only hope I can remember the chords when I practice on my own, and I look forward to my next lesson with Mike. I can already tell I'll be signing up for more lessons. Great teacher, and I can say that because I tried to learn some years ago with another instructor, and he made me feel like I'd just never get it and may as well give up. Mike erased all that negativity for me in 30 minutes. Thanks, Mike!

Jill graduated with her Bachelor's of Music Degree in Performance Violin and Viola from the Cole Conservatory of Music at the California State University, Long Beach as a music scholarship student and on honor roll. She also studied piano at university and privately and studied jazz im

Jill has performed at the Segerstrom Concert Hall, Walt Disney concert Hall and Soka Performing Arts Center.

Jill also attended the Montecito Summer Music Festival and Soka's Chamber Arts Festival to study and perform string quartets and piano quintets.

Jill also is classically trained and performed professionally with the Dana Point Symphony, Montage Civic Orchestra, Brentwood/Westwood Symphony, Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church orchestra, Vanguard Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Irvine. She also worked as a violinist for Irvine Valley College.

She performs classical, pop music, and jazz and plays reggae music, top hits, movie music, and rock for professional violin events as a solist and with a violin and cello duo.

Jill is patient and has a variety of students and able to adjust to each student's personality and needs.

Jill has performed as a solo violinist at the Orange County Fair in 2007 and 2008 with a Bluegrass band and was a concerto competition winner in 2004 performing Haydn's Violin Concerto No. 2 with the South Orange County Chamber Orchestra as a soloist.

Method books used:

Piano students learn from the Faber & Faber books, classical piano collection books, Bastien method books, Snell, Hanon exercises, and scale books by Bastien.

Violin and viola students use Suzuki method books along with reading music and playing all standard violin and viola literature outside of the Suzuki method. Students learn vibrato and shifting to other positions and learn from etude exercise books, scale studies using Carl Flesch books or Essentials for Strings books, and Sassmanshaus Early Start on violin, a fun method book for young violin students.

Etude books used: Wolfahrt, Kreutzer, Rode, Dont, Fiorillo, Gavines, and exercises from Schradiek and Sevcik. Composers and literature taught: concertos by Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Hoffmeister, Stamitz, Mendelssohn, Wieniawski, and Kabalevsky to name a few. Bach Sonatas and Partitas and Bach cello suites for viola. Sonatas by Beethoven, LeClair, Vivaldi, Frank, Brahms, and more! Jill can also teach pop, fiddle, and has studied jazz improv and jazz theory.

Private violin students can participate in the Certificate of Merit program testing in Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach.

Students also learn to read music (Sight reading) and learn rhythm.

2 optional recitals per year for students.

Jill can help students with orchestra auditions for local youth orchestras.

She has helped students get into All State and All Southern Youth Orchestras, join youth orchestras that summer tour Europe, helped students with Certificate of Merit, and auditions and acceptance into the Orange County High School of the Arts and college auditions.

She has taught at various music studios and coached music at high schools and middle schools in orange county.

Brian discovered his talent and passion for teaching while still in college, and has been teaching guitar and piano in Southern California for over 20 years. Brian also has over 10 years experience teaching piano and guitar to blind and autistic students.

A lifelong musician, Brian received his first musical training at the age of 4 and 5 years when his actor/singer Dad and musically talented Grandma taught him to sing and play the mandolin. He began piano lessons at age 5, and formal guitar instruction at the age of 10 years.

By the time he was a 14-year-old high school student, Brian was performing as lead guitarist in rock bands around Southern California
, developing mastery of rock guitar and blues performance and improvisation. Brian went on to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from California State University, Los Angeles.

Passionate about all kinds of music, Brian's studies include choral music and conducting, Gregorian chant (at the Monastery of St. Pierre de Solesmes, France), and Master Classes with Andrés Segovia and Christopher Parkening. In 1984, he participated as a member of the Honor Choir for the ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which included recording of original music by Philip Glass for the Olympic Games under the direction of David L. MY APPROACH:
I focus on four areas that I think are essential to being a good music teacher:

• the uniqueness of each student;
• the fact that enjoyment (fun!) maximizes learning;

EACH STUDENT IS UNIQUE:
My first interest with each new student is to discover how he or she learns, and then to apply appropriate teaching techniques to maximize their potential. I gear my lesson plans to the individual and strive to optimize the learning potential of the student.

ENJOYMENT MAXIMIZES LEARNING:
In a lesson with me you can expect to never be bored, to laugh a lot, learn a lot, be positively engaged emotionally and challenged intellectually. I believe that learning is maximized when the student is enjoying the experience, and is faced with challenges appropriate to their skill level. I aim to make learning music fun, choosing musical selections to learn in the style and genre that relate to the student's interests and aspiration.

TECHNIQUE & UNDERSTANDING OF MUSIC THEORY TO BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE:
When my students perform in concerts, recitals, juries, auditions, recording sessions or simply for friends and family, they have self-confidence because they know precisely the "how" and "why" of everything required to perform well. My goal with students is to build a solid foundation in instrumental technique and thorough understanding of Music Theory at their appropriate level.

PERFORMANCE:
On a monthly basis, all my students practice performing pieces they are working on during the lesson time, with family/friends as an audience if desired and appropriate, and/or using digital recording to help the student develop a critical ear for their own playing.

Guitar students should also have their own guitar. I can advise on appropriate instruments and can help students find a suitable guitar for their learning level and price range.

I have approximately taken ten or twelve lessons. I started from scratch, and Brian's input and guidance has helped me to move along pretty fast in my learning. My ear is becoming more selective. My fingers are more and more flexible. My idea of learning piano was to do so, in order to play for me and maybe one or two more people. I've learned with Brian that even if that is the case, I must still handle myself, as if I am going to be part of a band. This is teaching me the importance of counting and keeping the rhythm for me and for others. It basically helps me to have a structure. Thank you Brian

I just finished a series of online upright bass lessons with Dr. Norman. It's wonderful to have a lesson without toting the bass around town. Dr. Norman is impressive in skill and knowledge. There was nothing musically he didn't know, couldn't explain, or demonstrate on the bass. He has a keyboard at hand to play chords or emphasize a particular key, and he is proficient on that too. Dr. Norman is A++.

Dr.Chang Lu is both an active musician and dedicated instructor in Los Angeles. Born into a family of musicians, she was introduced to piano at the young age of four, and the flute at age of nine. She has given performances on both instruments throughout her music career. Having attended elementary, middle and high schools that were attached to a music conservatory, she has been a professionally trained musician since a young age. She started to provide private flute lessons, piano lessons, aural skills and music theory classes already while in high school in China. In the US, Dr. Lu has appeared in many Hollywood movie sound tracks, she has also performed as principal flutist with Beverly Hills Symphony Orchestra, Hollywood Sinfonietta, Los Angeles Sinfonietta, Debut Symphony Orchestra, San Jose Youth Symphony, Fremont Flute Ensemble, US
C Thornton Wind Ensemble, Thornton Symphony Orchestra, Thornton Opera Orchestra and various chamber ensembles. Dr. Lu has worked with many renowned conductors such as James Judd, James Conlon, Carl St. Clair, Gerard Schwarz, H.Robert Reynolds, Sharon Lavery, Larry Livingston and Michael Powers. Chang has just had a concert leading the Thornton Baroque Sinfonia Ensemble performing a Telemann Flute Concerto.

Dr.Lu graduated with a Doctoral of Musical Arts Degree from USC Thornton School of Music in flute performance studying with Jim Walker, former Los Angeles Philharmonic principal flutist. She also earned minor degrees in Music Theory, Orchestral Conducting and Early Music. Dr. Lu has been a successful teacher teaching at USC as an adjunct flute instructor as well as piano and music theory teaching at several music studios. Dr.Lu’s students have been awarded several prizes in national competitions, such as 1st prize in the SYMF competition in July 2016.

Lesson Details:

As a teacher, I love to see my students take pride in their improvements and strive to be a leader. I have taught many students at all levels. From teaching them how to read music while providing the fundamentals of piano playing, to college level of auditioning for significant competitions. I particularly like to focus on students who are interested in band and orchestra at school. It’s the joy of teaching to see kids marvel at different tones and musicality they can produce.

Chang is a very dedicated and serious instructor. She is extremely passionate about teaching and learning; it shows in her students' growth. As a teenager, I learned to play figured bass on a harpsichord in baroque ensembles for many years. My knowledge is classically informed and branches out into every modern style.

Junewon is not only fascinated by jazz guitar playing but also jazz harmony, arranging, and composing. “Isn’t It Love”, one of his composition has been released by recording of New York City based jazz guitarist, Peter Bernstein in 2012.
Currently, he plays guitar with Shekinah Worship Band every Sunday at Sa-Rang Comunity Church in Anaheim, CA, while he is working on his debut album by composing, arranging, and rehearsing with his trio.

I really enjoyed our first lesson. He was clear and had materials for me, and even thought ahead of if I had studied on my own, which I had! I would recommend him to anyone. Loads of fun with great homework to boot!
