Larry and his wife are so friendly and knowledgeable. I came away from my first lesson feeling much more confident in my ability and encouraged to develop it further. They critiqued my current ability without being mean or hurtful, and they gave me plenty of positive feedback on the things I'm doing right. Being self-taught will only get you so far. Having an actual instructor who can create a plan based on your specific needs is invaluable. I highly recommend.

I have a Ph.D. in Math and have been teaching college math courses and tutoring HS math courses for over 40 years. My top subjects are Statistics, Probability, Calculus, Discrete Math, Finite Math as well as HS AP and pre-calculus classes.

I tutor in-person as well as online. With online tutoring I can be contacted on short notice and if I am free we can connect immediately so I can give homework assistance or help prep for an exam.

For In-Person tutoring I tutor in my home office, in your home or at a mutually agreeable location. I am near Queens College and St. John's University if meeting on campus is convenient. (Travel charge might increase for a longer travel distance or time. Upper level or graduate courses might be at a higher hourly rate.)

I have been successfully tutoring students for as long as I have been
teaching. My goal is to give my students the ability to understand the mathematical concepts that will enable him or her to do well in their particular course.

I know that math does not come easily to everyone and I tailor my tutoring to go at a pace that is appropriate for each individual.

It is just as important for a tutor to listen to the student as it is for the student to pay attention to the tutor.

Dr. F. was extremely patient with my son. He always made sure to go over the questions until my son was able to do them on his own. We were able to contact him and get online help right away which was great when my son was stuck on a homework assignment.If anyone asks if I would recommend him I would give an emphatic yes!

I am a doctoral-level student and haven't taken a statistics course since being an undergraduate over 15 years ago. I am so impressed with Madi as a piano instructor for a simple reason-- she has both a real love and natural talent for music AND she knows her technical stuff-- music theory and how to teach different ages. Too many teachers are either/or that way so I really connected with how she balances both the artistic and music loving aspects with solid technique on the piano. I definitely would recommend her as a piano instructor.

With classes like calculus we often find that examples in the book or in class are only addressing the most basic form of a problem and it feels like our homework is on a completely different topic. This is when one-on-one lessons may be most beneficial.

I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.

One of my favorite classes in high school was calculus. When we go in depth into it understanding the different aspects of calculus will be second nature. Carnegie Mellon University statistics so calculus is a big part of my major.

I am a student at Carnegie Mellon University and have been teaching or tutoring for close to a decade now. This includes paid and volunteer private tutoring, classroom teaching, teaching assistant, and even a summer camp for elementary and middle-school students to learn computer science and programming skills. I also competed in math club during high school and was particularly successful in my senior year competing in statistics (6th place in the individual Nationals statistics event).

To some parents these might seem like useless facts but as an experienced teacher I can tell you that connecting with students on unrelated topics has an invaluable effect on the student-teacher relationship and will make for a smoother, unfiltered learning atmosphere. Not to mention it's much more exciting to refer to a sports analogy for a word problem rather than the unrelatable problems people are unfortunately used to ("person A buys x ft of fence...").

I have been working with Mary Anne on my computer programming skills for the last three months, and I have had a wonderful experience with her thus far. She has helped me with programming in both Matlab and Python, and on a variety of different projects. She is very good at explaining how to use the software, but more importantly, she is very patient when actually troubleshooting my attempts at coding. I make a ton of mistakes while writing, but Mary Anne is always great about helping me correct them without making me feel bad for making so many silly mistakes.
