I have been playing trumpet since the 4th grade, about 20 years now. I received my Bachelor in Trumpet Performance from the Peabody Conservatory and my Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the Bob Cole Conservatory at California State Long Beach. I have performed all over the United States and abroad and have performed a wide range of musical styles in a variety of musical settings; from classical solos, to contemporary chamber orchestras, to big bands, to top 40's wedding casual bands, to reggae, ska, rock, Latin, Persian, and more still. Whether you just want to learn a bugle call for boy scouts or want to prepare for an audition, competition, or recital, I will provide a comprehensive learning experience for the trumpet. I could take you from a beginner to playing for a living if you would like.

About Matthew
Music has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, when my father would record my brother and I singing. I always loved singing and learned many of my favorite songs as a child.

I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, which has led me all the way to receiving my degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education! I was lucky enough to attend one of the nation's top music schools, The Peabody Institute, and I now work toward my Master's degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have enjoyed performing in everything from big-band-lead to principal trumpet in the orchestra, leading brass quintets and brass ensembles, and much more! The trumpet has been a huge passion for as long as I can remember now!

While I was learning songs as a child, I decided I wanted to join a band! Now here we are 10 years later and
I've have the fortune of performing as a lead singer in bands across the country, and let me tell you there is no bigger thrill than getting in-front of a crowd full of cheering fans, performing music you love.

I've also been playing the guitar for just under 10 years. Playing the guitar has been both a complete joy, but also a fantastic learning experience. I have been learning songs of my favorite artists and even written my own material,and having the opportunity to immerse myself in my favorite music and create music of my own has taught me so much more about music and being a musician. I hope to impart this experience onto all of my students.

Whether it's trumpet, voice, or guitar, I love all things music and my #1 objective is to for my students to learn how it feels to experience what music REALLY has to offer, so to you reading this, let's make some noise!

*** Lesson Details ***
For starters, understand that you're going to have a blast! Within months of working together, I'll have you playing your favorite songs, or feeling prepared for that upcoming audition. I remember what it was like to have second thoughts about auditioning and performance, and I'll make sure those thoughts are a thing of the past for you!

During our lessons, I enjoy addressing the material you have to work on, whether in school or just for your own enjoyment. At the same time, I will present music and materials of my own, and I encourage you to do the same!

I have always enjoyed learning from my students as they have learned from myself, and I could only hope to express how rewarding it is when I see a student of mine progress from week to week and achieve their own goals.

I would provide utilities including music stand, metronome, some external source of pitch.

I expect the student to bring any and all assigned music/material they wish to work on. The student will also begin the lesson prepared with basic necessities, including a pencil (please, no pens) and all music assigned from prior lesson (if this is a first-lesson, bring any/all music you currently have and/or are working on). Vocal students will bring a bottle of water. Trumpet students will have their own valve oil and mouthpiece (if not originally included with your horn).

Trumpet methods include (not limited to) Arban's, Clarke, Sachs, Rubank, Getchell, Adam, Schlossberg, Colin, Bai Lin.

Vocal Lessons

I've been taking lessons with Matt for about 2 months now. Right away it was a very comfortable environment and vibe, which is important, especially as a beginning, aspiring singer. Takes the lessons slow and easy going at first, then jumps into exercises and focuses on directly what style the student is interested in. Very awesome dude, would definitely recommend! Thanks Matt!

Dr. Spaeth is currently working with Palen Music Center. He is also teaching at the University of Tulsa as an adjunct faculty member during Spring 2018. Spaeth maintains an online music studio through TakeLessons, where he teaches several instruments privately and in group settings including saxophone, guitar, oboe, music theory, flute, clarinet, and piano.

Dr. Carl Spaeth taught at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. His duties included graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class.

Prior to working at OSU, Spaeth was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. His responsibilities included directing the annual SDSU/Brookings Optim

Spaeth completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance at the University of Kansas in 2014, and his Master of Music Pedagogy and Performance from Oklahoma State University in 2011. He graduated from Harrah High School in 2002, earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2008, and was a 5th-12th grade Head Band Director at Fairview Public schools. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Spaeth was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Spaeth was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Spaeth has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Spaeth went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Spaeth was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Spaeth was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Spaeth's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen, Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Spaeth performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr., Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Spaeth's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. ​Spaeth enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. His compositions that have been performed include his big band arrangement of Cat Battles by Joshua Redman, September in the Refrain (alto saxophone and electronics), Funk-o-matic (jazz combo), Smooth (jazz combo), and The Deadline Arrives at Dawn (alto saxophone and electronics). As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Spaeth performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Spaeth directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

​Dr. Spaeth is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Spaeth performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Spaeth performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale. In April 2017, Spaeth performed solo tenor saxophone and orchestral clarinet in Ethan Bortnick's national PBS Special called "Generations of Music," which featured special guest, Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul and Mary.

Miles McAllister is a Southern California-based performer and educator. He is a member of the nationally and internationally touring brass quintet Presidio Brass (presidiobrass.com). He is also 3rd trumpet of the Santa Barbara Symphony and a member of the Disneyland Band at the Disneyland Resort. Miles is an active freelance performer and has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, Pacific Chorale, Long Beach Symphony, San Diego Symphony and Pops, New West Symphony, California Philharmonic, Redlands Symphony Orchestra, Riverside Philharmonic, Golden State Pops Orchestra, San Bernardino Symphony, Pacific Brass Ensemble, and many other groups throughout Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County, and the Inland Empire.

He can be heard on Star Wars: Rogue One, Star Trek: Discovery, American Dad and True Believers: The
Stan Lee Story. From 2011-2013, he played lead trumpet for Carnival Cruise Lines in numerous showbands performing in their full-scale production shows and live variety sets. He appeared as a soloist with the Redlands Symphony where he performed the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto and at the Redlands Bowl Festival performing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto. He has also performed with Persian pop singer Shahkar, Mannheim Steamroller, Chris Botti, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

He earned his Master of Music in Trumpet Performance at California State University Fullerton in 2015 and graduated from the University of Redlands in 2011 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance.

As an educator, Miles is energetic and keeps lessons positive, varied, and always with a goal in mind. There is a constant emphasis on building fundamentals and using those as a foundation for making great music. Not everyone learns the same way so it is his aim to be adaptable to the student's needs to help them understand and process the concepts behind good trumpet playing. He has taught all ages and skill levels, privately and in group settings, and can be a valuable asset in helping you achieve your musical pursuits. Hi, I'm Sandra and I have been teaching in the Bay Area since 2006. I have a passion for working with young students, especially those with special needs, in a fun and encouraging environment. I design individualized lesson plans and your child will have clear direction of weekly goals. How does your service stand out?
​My studio requires students to practice a minimum of 30 minutes every day with wee
kly progress reports, weekly listening to music for their instrument with evaluations, semester auditions, and recitals. I require students to video record each practice session so I can verify practice time as well as provide suggestions to maximize efficiency. I encourage involvement with outside music ensembles and we take field trips to watch professional musicians. Any student with enthusiasm is welcome in my studio!!

What do you enjoy about the work you do?
I love getting to know all different students and seeing them grow. I look long term for satisfaction with my job, it barely feels like work. I get to make music daily with really cool kids, what could be better than that?!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start wherever the student is. We work on fundamentals regardless of ability, and I assess what level the student plays to make a decision on what materials we use.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching when I was in high school to help my band director out. I always wanted to be the type of teacher that was similar to my mentors; compassionate, hard working, enthusiastic, and patient. I began teaching professionally when I was in music college and continued to enjoy working with all types of students.

What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 6 and as old as 70. I work with special needs in any form. I work with students that practice really hard to attain a specific goal and others who are only trying to get better for band music.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who can thoroughly answer your questions and will also be flexible to meet your needs. Make sure the teacher still takes enrichment classes to keep current with research, their instrument, and to help develop better and newer ways of teaching.

I offer in-person and online lessons ranging from 45-90 minutes.

Ms. Laverty has been my son’s private trumpet teacher since the summer of 2012. She is patient, kind and very supportive of his efforts in playing the trumpet. In large part, she is the reason that my son enjoys playing trumpet and continues to thrive as a musician.

From the beginning she tailored her lessons to include the music that my son was interested in and also added increasingly more complex music to work on and master.

Sandra has taped him playing during lessons to show him how and where he can improve in body position, quality of sound and other nuances. She regularly uses her laptop computer to show videos of performances that support the lesson and also assigns various Internet sites to view for exposure to other musicians and styles.

Sandra regularly provides opportunities for my son to perform in public. He has performed at the annual CMEA event at San Jose State University, and other smaller events where he played solo on stage. They have both joined in at a local café for practice in improvisation, as my son loves to play jazz. This has really helped in his jazz solo opportunities at school. She has also organized a quartet of student trumpet players to work together on various music pieces and then they all performed together for family and friends. This was a unique experience for the children to practice and play together and perform as a group.

My son is also interested in basketball and baseball, and Sandra has been very flexible in scheduling lessons to accommodate my son’s athletic and school schedules. After about 6 months of lessons, she offered twice a week lessons to capitalize on my son’s enthusiasm and increase the speed of musical advancement so his confidence soared and he wanted to play more because he liked doing something he felt he was good at. He kept this schedule for about a year and then back to once a week to allow for more time for other interests.

During middle school, my son played trumpet in both the Advanced Band and also Jazz Band classes. This past summer, Sandra again offered twice weekly lessons to get ready for his high school debut. As a result, he was chosen to play first chair in the high school jazz band. He was also one of only two freshmen that were accepted into the most advanced band class (also known at Wind Ensemble) at Lincoln High School.

I recommend Sandra Laverty, without reservation, for any trumpet teaching opportunity.

As a performer I have played in the Los Angeles and Orange County area for the past 3 years as a member of big bands, jazz combos, and 4 piece brass ensembles. I have taught in both one on one settings as well as full ensemble classes and have seen great progress and success in my students in each. Overall my focus in teaching is on sound quality, technique, and stylistic relevance.

There I studied under several talented teachers including Dr. Tim Labor and Dr. Barbara Bennett, as well as Trumpeters Don Clarke, Richard Chasin, and Joshua Welchez. Since graduating I have been engaging in some freelance work both as a one on one private instructor, as well as a technician for Azusa High School's Jazz Ensemble.

John is a great instructor, having his own background in trumpet playing and a high understanding of how to play the instrument. Having received lessons from him for a year now, I can say I have really improved alot thanks to him. John is very patient, and very accommodating.

Music education is my passion. Currently a certified New York State N-12 music teacher, teaching instrumental music in a school district on Long Island. I have been playing piano since I was 5 years old and performed a pair of recitals at Carnegie Hall and other fine performance halls. In addition to the piano I play multiple instruments and teach several such as the cello, violin, trumpet, clarinet and saxophone. I am excited to start offering my teaching services on trombone, euphonium and the rest of the instruments from the brass family here at takelessons.com.

I have played with notable groups such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and am a former member of renowned Axiom Brass Quintet. I studied with Jay Friedman and other members of the Chicago Symphony at Roosevelt University for five years. My teaching philosophy falls into the Arnold Jacobs Song and Wind school of thought. I teach a lot of mouthpiece buzzing, and fundamental exercises to get my students playing with golden singing sounds!

Currently I am starting my second year in the DMA program at the University of Iowa where I am also a graduate teaching assistant in the trombone studio. In addition to the teaching I do at the University I am also a low brass teaching partner a
t West Music in Coralville.

Currently I am affiliated with two professional orchestras in the Eastern Iowa area. I am the second trombonist in Orchestra Iowa based out of Cedar Rapids, and will be filling in as an interim second trombone for the 2017-2018 Quad City Symphony season. I have been playing in professional orchestras for the last ten years and can teach you orchestral style, and audition preparation.

In addition to my orchestra playing, I was also a member of Axiom Brass Quintet from 2012-2014 where we were the first prize winners at the International brass competition held in Passau Germany.

As a soloist, I was also the grand prize winner of the Chicago International Brass solo competition in 2012 on euphonium.
Currently, I am also an active member with the New Chicago Brass, a modern brass ensemble based out of Chicago. I am comfortable teaching all brass instruments for all ages and skill levels. I look forward to answering any questions you may have in regard to taking lessons on a brass instrument.

It is important that the private instructor is completely engaged in the student’s learning and enjoyment of their trumpet playing. If the student isn’t enjoying their time, it is important to find out what’s wrong and how to adapt to that student’s specific needs and wants to positively influence their learning and motivation to learn. Music education between multiple different students is going to be different for each student. It is important for the music teacher to learn from their own teaching and accustom to each and every student to make the learning environment more welcoming and compelling for them. Grant Barker is currently pursuing his Master's of Music Performance at University of Northern Colorado. He is receiving his studies from Philip Hembree. Grant just recently graduated from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana with a BM in Music Performance where he studied with John Rommel and Edmund Cord. He is currently the Third Trumpet in the Longmont Symphony and a member of the Bierstadt Brass Quintet. Grant has performed with the Georgia Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, and side-by-side with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra. He has performed as a selected concerto competition winner with the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra.
