I have been teaching music theory part time since 1972 and full time since 1998. One of the most important aspects of learning music theory is going beyond "what to play" and teaching you "why you're playing it". Once you have a grasp of basic theory concepts, you'll be able to learn new songs twice as fast, and with a great deal more accuracy!

Jesse Torre began studying guitar at the age of ten, and in his studies has developed an unwitting passion for playing and teaching. Bay Area native Jesse has studied with classical guitarist Angel Miguel Lejarza Leo, flamenco guitar virtuoso Jason McGuire, and has worked under the mindful instruction of classical guitarist Nicholas Goluses at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, New York. There Jesse completed his Bachelors in Music (Classical Performance) with distinction, and was honored with a Performer’s Certificate, demonstrating excellence in guitar performance. During his undergraduate studies, Jesse performed in masterclasses led by the prestigious GFA winner, Tengyue Zhang, and Bach expert, Paul Galbraith. His time at Eastman has given him a strong background in music theory; he is an advocate for the written and aural analysis of music, and stresses the importance of composition and instrumental exploration. As a performer and teacher, Jesse specializes in ...

About Jesse

I love music and have been composing and performing for many years. And although I love to compose and perform, teaching is probably my favorite aspect of working in music. I get the most joy in teaching when an individual learns something new, or when things start to "click" so to speak. Further, I

Jesse is an excellent teacher. He is calm, warm and incredibly patient with my 6 year old daughter. After having a thoughtful discussion about how we should start lessons, we agreed on an approach that would further encourage her natural enthusiasm for music. She loves it. Jesse has also been very flexible with offering zoom and in person classes. I have been really impressed with how well he holds my daughter’s attention even over zoom. He is a wonderful teacher and I could not recommend him more.

Jesse masters the art of making teaching be FUN! He is an incredible musician, but knows how to connect with kids to open up their world to love and learn music. My 6 year old son and 7 year old daughter both do ukulele lessons with Jesse, and it’s a highlight of their week. As a parent, I’m excited to have them learning an instrument, and at the same time, I see it building their confidence too. Being brave to practice singing and playing the instrument, despite feeling nervous about it. Jesse has a beautiful way of connecting to the kids with humor and encouragement, so they feel both comfortable and confident. I’m so happy we started music lessons with Jesse, and honestly cannot recommend him enough!!

Jesse structures lessons for the skill of the student and the direction the student wants to go in. Emphasizing the students abilities. He is knowledgeable in all aspects of music. Jesse explains concepts well and also ensures the student understands what is being thought. Great guitarist and great teacher.

Brian is great for kids and adults!

My 10-year-old showed interest in learning piano, and Brian is great! My 8-year-old thought it looked fun, so we added him, and Brian does a great job with him. In fact, my 40-something husband was so impressed, he signed up, too! Brian is terrific with all of them. Everyone is learning at his own speed and each is improving. Brian adeptly teaches according to skill, interest, aptitude, and attitude. I'm so impressed! I heartily recommend for anyone looking for a music teacher.

I had no clue how to play a bass guitar. I was fortunate thru the college he was teaching at to be honored to have Scott teach me at my beginner level, the basics of bass guitar. His patience with me was much appreciated as again, this was new to me and at the time being 69 years old, I wasn’t a quick learner. After several sessions, I was able to play basic cords, study the notes on the frets thru his lesson plan. I was sad that Scott left the college for NYC, but was very happy for him as he wanted to pursue his masters degree. Thanks to his patience and excellent teaching skills, I was able to continue lessons with another instructor and not embarrass myself as I had minute skills that helped me become a little more than a beginner. I am still going at it and loving every second but it was Scott’s patience and teaching skills that kept the fire lit to continue pursuing my love of the bass guitar. I can’t thank Scott enough and I wish him well with his goal of a master’s degree.

"As a preface, I am a beginner-intermediate music producer, so very much of what I make is still rather amateur. I have spent tens of hours watching different YouTube videos and reading blogs about music production trying to learn how to get better. If I had to put a time frame, I'd say I've been producing as a hobby for about 4 years now.

Anyway, I had a 1-hour lesson with Mark and I feel like I learned more about mixing in that 1-hour than I have in the months watching YouTube videos. Mark is super knowledgeable about music production and its techniques and he had answers to all of my questions. If you're on the fence about booking, I would highly suggest booking with Mark as he is professional, knowledgable, and easy to understand as he breaks down his methods in a beginner-friendly manner - things some other producer mentors struggle with I feel.

I would definitely book again with Mark in the future. If you want to level up your production, Mark is your best bet."

"As Jim states on his bio, he teaches from age 8 and up. I'm one of his "up" students who's been playing guitar for a few years, but never took time to learn theory because I thought it was too confusing or difficult to learn. After being stuck in a rut for the past 30 years, I finally realized that I could be a guitar player, instead of just playing guitar, by understanding WHY I'm playing what I playing. I planned to take a few lessons to see how it would go. That was 4 months ago. Now when I pick up my guitar, I have a plan and am excited to learn more each week. Jim's approach to teaching theory makes it clear for anyone of any age or expertise. If you're young and want to learn the right way, Jim will teach you the right way. For us older folks, I found out you CAN teach an old dog new tricks... I highly recommend Jimmy!"

Why You Should Learn (At Least a Little) Music Theory

One of the most common weaknesses for amateur musicians is a lack of music theory knowledge. Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine.
