Dr. Spranza is one of the best piano teachers in the Bay Area. My two daughters take weekly lessons with her. She encourages them and empowers them to do their best. She teaches them both theory and practicals. They have participated in an informal recital and are now registered to take part in the MTAC Certificate of Merit program.

As parents, we see a big improvement in our daughters' piano playing skills. They even practice on their own, without us telling them to. All thanks to Dr. Spranza.

First clarinet lesson today with Mack Ruck. I'm a rank beginner, which is why I chose Mack. I figured that a band and orchestra teacher would have encountered many of me over his career in the schools, and know how to work with different styles of learning. He also would be able to explain stuff simply from the very base level. I was really right! I came out of the lesson knowing how to read and play middle C through A (not very well, but that's why we practice). I learned ways to make the note actually sound, what you can do to screw up the sound or make it clear and on-key. Not too shabby for starting the half hour without being able to make a sound on the clarinet. So he's a great teacher. He's also the most patient guy on earth, with nerves of iron!

About David
I've studied with some of the finest trombonists in the US and completed my Bachelors degree in Trombone Performance at the University of Arizona. My performing background is a balanced mix of classical and commercial ensembles. I've played in symphony orchestras, pit orchestras, show bands, jazz bands, chamber music, and dixieland to name just a few. It all starts with learning the basics and that's how I approach trombone, bass trombone, euphonium, and tuba with my students. I have several years experience with my private studio, in-house lessons, as well as teaching brass at a performing arts high school. Students learn relaxed technique, production of a beautiful tone, and overall musicality.

*** Lesson Details ***
I place an emphasis on building embouchure, breathing, posture, musical interpretation, sight-reading and theory.

I encourage relaxed technique while enjoying the process of making music.

All of the above can be applied to any style of music the student is interested in exploring.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio is located in a relaxed setting near a creek. For the teaching of brass instruments, not much equipment is needed though I have a metronome, tuner, digital recorder, sounds system, and plenty of music to get started.

Learn how to master the art of tuba playing with a current Juilliard student. David Freeman, 21, has studied with Alan Baer of the New York Philharmonic for the past 4 years, and is expected to graduate from The Juilliard School in 2018. Originally from Los Angeles, David has had the pleasure of taking lessons with and working alongside many of LA's top tuba players, including Jim Self, Norm Pearson, Jeff Anderson, Scott Sutherland, and John van Houten. His lessons focus on preparing students of any level to take auditions, apply for schools/colleges, and play in bands/orchestras.

About David
David currently attends The Juilliard School in New York City, pursuing a bachelor of music degree in tuba performance. His primary teacher is tubist Alan Baer, of the New York Philharmonic. Before his acceptance into Juilliard, David studied and worked with many professional musicians throughout Los Angeles, CA. He has had the privilege of taking lessons, attending master classes, and performing with some of the world’s best tubists including Jim Self, Roger Bobo, Norm Pearson, Jeff Anderson, and John Van Houten. He studied primarily with freelance trombonist Amy Bowers, of USC.

Though he is a full time student and member of the Juilliard Orchestra, David also has had many performance opportunities outside of school. In 2014, he performed the Vaughan-Williams Tuba Concerto with the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, and since then, he
has had the pleasure of performing with the Brooklyn Symphony, Mannes College, Weill-Cornell, Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, and the Altino Brothers at Carnegie Hall.

David's brass quintet, Apex Brass, regularly performs in prestigious venues all across New York, including Alice Tully Hall, New York Supreme Court, Morgan Library, and various museums. In the summer of 2017, the quintet took off to Japan, where they competed in the 9th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. Shortly after, Apex was invited to Tianjin, China, where they performed at the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Juilliard-Tianjin campus, and gave a recital at the Tianjin Conservatory.
