The second you put your reed on your mouthpiece, you shape your sound. I like to alternate mouthpieces for unique new tones for different styles. Whether you are a beginner or have played for a few years, I can help you learn to play through passages, improvise over chords, and find your distinct tone. Let's jam!

About Brian

Brian is great for kids and adults!

My 10-year-old showed interest in learning piano, and Brian is great! My 8-year-old thought it looked fun, so we added him, and Brian does a great job with him. In fact, my 40-something husband was so impressed, he signed up, too! Brian is terrific with all of them. Everyone is learning at his own speed and each is improving. Brian adeptly teaches according to skill, interest, aptitude, and attitude. I'm so impressed! I heartily recommend for anyone looking for a music teacher.

Saxophone is my primary instrument and the one I am the most excited about. I've been teaching saxophone for a year and my students have gone on to perform in area-all-state competitions and concerts in the NY area. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play a few folk songs and as time goes on you'll be able to read treble clef. I specialize in classical, typically use Tune-A-Day or Jump Right In books, and have the following tools available for your lessons: metronome, and laptop. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

Robin was early to our first lesson. She worked with my son easily, he felt comfortable with her. She helped him with his fingering and gave tips for the difficult notes. We look forward to working with her for the next month.

Saxophone:
A family of woodwind instruments, saxophones are usually made of brass and played with a single-reed mouthpiece similar to that of the clarinet. Like the clarinet, saxophones have holes in the instrument which the player closes using a system of key mechanisms. When the player presses a key, this typically causes a pad to close over a hole. There is soprano, alto, tenor, bass and baritone saxophones. The great thing about learning saxophone is it is almost the same fingers as flute and clarinet! We will start with the basics of learning finger placement, breath control, notes, reading, rhythms, songs, theory and improvising.

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

This teacher misrepresented her ability to teach the C system chromatic button accordion. I don't believe that she has ever played one. I asked her before purchasing a set of classes if she knew this instrument and was competent to teach it, and she said she was.

She didn't have one, so she could never demonstrate anything I asked about. She didn't know the key layout. She didn't know the conventions for numbering fingers. She didn't know the basic home key scale pattern.

I waited until I'd finished four classes with my new teacher before writing this so I'd have a good basis for comparison. He is immensely better at teaching this than she was. It further convinced me that she never should have represented herself as competent to teach this particular instrument.

The saxophone is easy to start on (if you know the right tricks) and tough to master. Wherever you are on your journey with the instrument, I've been there, and I can help. We'll sort out your fundamentals- tone, time, technique and intonation- while learning your favorite tunes and music I recommend for you based on what you like and want to learn. We improvise, compose, transcribe, and arrange so that you can understand music and express ideas fluently in any medium, the same way you can read, write and speak your native languages. The ultimate goal is to give you all the tools you need to create music you love- whether that means covering something you heard on Spotify or improvising new music from scratch.

I've played saxophone for over 15 years, studying first with Dann Zinn in the Bay Area, and then George Garzone and Shannon LeClaire at Berklee College of Music. I've taught the instrument and music to people since I was 18. I learned the instrument through an obsession with ...

Ethan has always shone as the most impressive of all my mentors in my eyes. Even since I started working with him four years ago, he has always put in the most effort for each of his students, and still continues to outdo himself. A great quality of his that proves more difficult to find out there is his raw passion and skill for leaving no bit of knowledge behind in sharing with his students. Whether it’s advanced music theory skills or pro-level composition techniques, he never fails to demonstrate his talent for spreading knowledge and helping his students learn. Ethan is an astounding instructor, mentor, and friend, and I hope other students can experience the same learning opportunities that I have.
Ethan
Of all the instructors I have ever had, there has never been one that I felt cared about my growth as a musician as much as Ethan. Not only did he help my growth as a saxophonist, but myself as a musician and enjoyer of music as an art. He helped me find what I wanted to sound like and the music I wanted to make. Along with this he was able to answer every question I had eloquently and clearly. Beyond the music he also had served as a great mentor throughout some of my more difficult years and I would recommend him to anyone looking to discover more about both music and themselves. Also pretty funny guy.

I have studied saxophone, jazz piano/theory, and songwriting with Ethan for over 2 years, and he is the best music instructor I've ever had. He cares so much about his students and helps us thrive. Not only is Ethan my teacher, he is a friend and a mentor.

I first met Ethan through my school's jazz combo program, and my interest in music immediately grew in the presence of his friendly persona. Ethan organized life changing jam sessions and master classes that I will remember forever. His teaching approach is project based which gives his students something to walk away with. With his guidance, I have become a stronger musician and a wiser person. Thanks Ethan!

Choosing a Neck Strap | How to Play Saxophone Tips

Learning how to play saxophone starts with the right equipment--namely, a quality neck strap! Read on for some helpful advice from Brookings, SD teacher Carl S...    The saxophone is a unique instrument for many reasons. One example is that the saxophone is the only band instrument that uses a neck strap. Unfortunately, the neck strap is often the most overlooked aspect of playing the instrument.
