highly structured instruction in vocal technique—personalized for your individual needs—for measurable long term results
About Sven
I'm a singer and choral conductor with 20 years experience as a full-time performing musician. I have taught class voice and individual singing lessons at the New England Conservatory of Music and have been a Teaching Artist with San Francisco Opera for nine years. As artistic director of Lacuna Arts (SF), I conduct the 24 voice a cappella Chorale and present workshops in ear training, sight singing, and music theory for choral singers. My students have gone on to major in voice performance at the college level and to perform as soloists with local choruses.
*** Lesson Details ***
I teach classical singing technique based on a scientific knowledge of vocal anatomy and the physics of sound—and not on flashy gimmicks.
Through guided practice, you will learn to:
-take a long
-initiate the vocal tone with an onset that is neither breathy nor pressed
-manage breath efficiently so you never feel like you "run out" of air in the middle of a phrase
-connect from pitch to pitch and vowel to vowel for a seamless legato
-sing any dynamic from piano to forte
-increase your vocal range from top to bottom with balanced resonance and smooth register transitions
If you study with me, you will learn why common expressions like "breathe from the diaphragm" are essentially meaningless (we can only breathe from the diaphragm). And you will come to understand why things like trying to "bring the sound forward" or "send the voice to the back of the room" are physically impossible (sound doesn't move like that).
Whether you are interested in singing opera, choral music, or musical theater, you will learn a foundational classical singing technique that will allow you to make the artistic choices you want with confidence, poise, and finesse. Students must be serious about improving their singing and commit to a minimum of 60 minutes of at-home practice between lessons.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the living room, upright Kawai piano, sitting area, mirror, music stand, Edirol/Roland digital recorder
*** Travel Equipment ***
Must have piano
*** Specialties ***
classical, opera, and "legit" musical theater

I rate Sven 5 stars because aside from being a very educated (musically and socially speaking) person, he also welcomes you into his class with a mix of kindness and funny personality super willing to teach you but at the same time wanting to push you and get the best out of you.
I was very impressed by how much knowledge he always has in his hands, with his wonderful credentials but mostly with how motivating it was to be learning from someone you feel knows what he is doing, and because of that, earns your respect and makes you want to work harder and make the best out of the lesson.
As I mentioned before, I went to Sven with the very specific goal of preparing my portfolio to apply to my dream music school, and not only he gave me the confidence to arrange my existing material, he motivated me to create new material.
Not only I completed my task but I gathered months of knowledge in a matter of 2 weeks.
Very happy and thankful to have had the opportunity to study and work with him.
Super recommended as a teacher, and very cool person :).

I love the art of singing classically and I am trained in the bel canto style.
About Liesl
Music is a gateway to the soul, and part of what builds into their own self-identity. I currently serve as the music director for the adult choir and children’s programs at a Lutheran Church in California.
My music degrees from Westminster Choir College and San Francisco State University have helped me grow as a vocal soloist and professional performer as well as an educator. I have been a featured artist at many concerts and events around Northern California,
Education is important to me, and although I have my Master of Music in voice teaching and performance, I often attend workshops, trainings, and other continuing education programs so that my students can receive the best training I can offer.

Singing has been my passion since the age of 4. The voice is very special - it empowers us to live the lives we desire, communicate with others, and express ourselves. It is my mission to help others discover and develop their voices, thereby freeing them to use it as they choose.
Beyond the functional voice, I teach performance skills, musicianship, music reading, foreign language diction, phonetics, and so much more! I have a Bachelors in Music Education, a Masters in Performance, and a performance resume ranging from jazz to opera.
I love working with singers of all ages and experience levels. I know how to engage with children and adults alike for a productive, enriching musical experience, so whether you are a sings-all-the-time 2nd grader, a recreational karaoke buff, a devoted choral singer, or an operatic baritone, you have a place in my studio.
About Paige
I have a Bachelors in Music Education with a K-12 certification in Vocal Education, as well as a Masters in Performance. I have a strong musical background, having sung in the Texas All - State Choir, University Interscholastic League, and National Association of Teachers of Singing.
When I am not teaching, I actively perform in the Greater Bay Area, singing jazz, choral music, and opera.

I access singing and speaking through movement and resonance. We discover the way your body moves freely, opening up the breath and getting it to flow freely. Then we discover how to access your resonance with that freely flowing breath. Singing and speaking comes easily from there. Lessons with me are a combination of yoga class, anatomy lesson, and actually making sound. I find that if we see our voices as another part of the body that we're training, we see that singing is a movement technique, and looking at it that way actually gives us the freedom to make art with it.
About Gwendolyn
I am also a 200 Hour Certified Yogalign teacher. Yogalign teaches the body how to come into natural, functional, comfortable alignment and strengthens it to stay there. I use it while teaching voice, but I also love to teach it on its own.
In voice lessons, I constantly incorporate alignment practices because we use our whole bodies to produce sound. A free breath, which means good alignment, is the foundation of good voice technique.
I believe
With public speakers, my goal is to help people feel at home in their bodies and command the room with their voices while giving presentations. I have given seminars teaching scientific researchers in Berlin and Potsdam, helping them to present results in ways that are both informative and inspiring.
Students in each area can expect to progress steadily week to week, provided they do the assigned exercises in between. The voice, the body, and language skills are all muscles we must train daily to expect any progress.
I look forward to working with creative students who have a passion for self-discovery and honest self-expression. Let's have fun!

About Patrick H.

I approach my teaching by finding every singer's true and honest voice, and then exploring ways to make that voice as free and beautiful as possible. In the course of our lessons I will utilize techniques to explore breath control, resonance, range and freedom of not only the voice, but the body's ability to express while performing.
Every person that is capable of speech is capable of singing beautifully, and I fully embrace that mantra as a teacher. With that approach, I teach a wide variety of styles, ranging from Music Theater to classically informed Operatic Singing. Let's make some music!
About Patrick
I love working with students of all ages and have been teaching since my undergraduate in 2010. Speaking of school, I hold a Bachelor of Music from The Pennsylvania State University in Voice with an emphasis on Vocal Pedagogy. I also hold a Master of Music from The San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where I continued my work in Pedagogy and Vocal Anatomy / Physiology.

About Victoria R.
CloseHello and congratulations on your decision to find the RIGHT voice teacher for your unique needs. I have been teaching voice for 27 years, both locally and internationally, and have studied voice for 40 years. I teach all styles, ranging from classical to musical theater, R&B to pop and jazz. I can help you cross-train and learn to sing multiple styles authentically. I also still study voice and perform frequently (again, classical to classic rock), so I understand the needs of all types of singers. I challenge all of my students at their own particular levels by prescribing vocal exercises for quick and longer term solutions, then applying it to their chosen songs. Our lessons are always fun! I treat all of my students like they are going to be on the big stage, regardless of experience, and also provide regular performance opportunities for them.
About Victoria
You can finally overcome your vocal obstacles, eliminate vocal tension, add more resonance and depth, and have more fun singing! I can help you find your *true voice* and explore your full potential. Being a true “vocal detective” and vocal technician, I develop and prescribe vocal exercises based on your individual needs, and then apply it to your song. I teach you how to practice correctly, and we both witness the prog
Perhaps you want to cross-train and explore other vocal styles? Maybe Classical to Pop, Musical Theater to Opera, and more? Great! I love cross-training singers! I can teach you the tools to sing in other genres smoothly and authentically.
I can help you with audition preparation or putting on a stunning (killer) performance. My students regularly win prizes in competitions. Many have gone on to pursue professional careers in performance, or as voice teachers and choral conductors. I also provide consistent performance opportunities and offer affordable group voice classes.
Every singer is unique. Singing is the most personal art form. It is my privilege to bring out the natural voice that lies within you and develop it to its fullest potential.
