Megan A.

Fairfax, VA

About Megan

I grew up on Long Island New York and am currently finishing up my music education degree at George Mason University. I have been playing flute for 13 years now and it's time I share my experience and love for music with others!

To me, music is an outlet and it's important that my students fall in love with music while also learning about it. Music has always been a driving force in my life and one of the greatest things I've been involved in. I hope to give my students the same opportunities I have had and make music an important part of their lives as well.

A typical lesson with me w
ill be structured like this:
Emphasis on basics (scales, studies, tuning, etc)
Sight Reading and Ear Training
Learning techniques through pieces

I had a lot of bad habits that developed over years so it will always be my goal to make sure this isn't the case with my students. Playing music should be fun, never too hard or painful. I will put a big emphasis on posture and building proper habits from the beginning.

My recommended length of time for a lesson is one hour. 30 minutes is not enough time once a week to really develop habits properly and really get into the heart of the music we will be working on.

I am really looking forward to acquiring more students!

Megan is an excellent flute teacher. I thought it was going to be difficult for me to learn how to play the flute but her method and patience has helped me and I am convinced that anyone can learn music with the right teacher. I highly recommend Megan for flute lessons.

Megan is working to get our 5th grader up and going on trumpet. He's a challenge, but she's up to it. She's pleasant, punctual and proficient. A great teacher.

Annie did a great job figuring out my daughter's competency level, as she had been taking lessons with a different teacher previously. Once she had that figured out, she was very adaptable, and worked hard to provide a lesson plan that would work for her. I highly recommend Annie.

Brianna S.

Annandale, VA

About Brianna

I am currently pursuing a BM in Trumpet Performance at George Mason University, studying under Professor Phil Snedecor. I have been playing trumpet for 14 years, and have orchestral, wind band, chamber, marching band, and pit orchestra experience. I have been teaching privately since 2012.

It is extremely important to me that my students reach their full potential, being the best musician they can be while still retaining their passion for music. I remember the first time I ever picked up a trumpet; it was one of the most unforgettable experiences.

I emphasize teaching and solidifying f
undamentals while creating a fun and musical environment for my students. I also believe that ear training is imperative in developing musicianship.

I am available to teach both 30 minute and 1 hour long lessons.

Learning trombone from Brianna was a great experience for my son, who is going into 6th grade this year. We wanted him to have a few lessons before starting band in middle school, and Brianna was the perfect person for the job. She taught him the basic skills he would need to succeed in the middle school band, and she really helped him become interested in music.

My daughter is 9 and a bit shy - played piano but never flute. Melissa jumped right in on our first lesson, went through the basics, and while doing so assessed her abilities (like ability to read music). Before she left, my daughter was playing some basic notes using the form Melissa taught her. As I write this, she is already practicing on her own after left with some challenging but fun practice. Only the first class, but a great "gut feeling". My wife and I both enjoyed Melissa's kind personality but most importantly our daughter enjoys her. We're optimistic for a great learning experience.

Do I Need to Learn Scales on the Ukulele?
New to the ukulele and curious if you'll need to learn scales? Music teacher Aaron B. shares the pros and cons of studying ukulele scales... The ukulele is mostly a chordal instrument and usually does not play solos or single note melody lines. So, the use of scale patterns on the neck is not essential. However, knowledge of scales and harmony is absolutely essential in the comprehension of music. Scales help us understand which notes work well together and why. Each key has its own innate
