Jesus G.

Chicago, IL

About Jesus

Jesus Garcia has more than 15 years experience teaching piano and 5 years teaching the Suzuki piano method, with dozens of his students playing successfully in recitals, competitions, and auditions around the Chicago area.

He completed his Masters of Music in Piano Performance with a scholarship from Roosevelt University, Chicago, Il. Renowned Mexican pianist Jorge Federico Osorio and Dr. Ludmila Lazard were his advisers and professors. In addition, during his program at Roosevelt University, Jesus took a course aimed at developing figure base and harpsichord performance with Dr. David
Schrader.

In 2012 he was certified piano Suzuki teacher by the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

Mr. Garcia performs solo recitals and lieder by Rachmaninoff, Shubert, and Schumann with his wife the soprano Darina Assenova in festivals such as “Shubertiade”, which is organized by Pianoforte Foundation in Chicago and Make Music Chicago.

He often performs in Cultural Festivals in Mexico and United Sates, and has performed with major orchestras as a soloist and as accompanist.

All his piano students are active as performers. Jesus always encourages them to perform in public, looking for piano festivals, competitions, recitals, auditions and any opportunities where they can showcase their talent. His students have been accepted in pre-college music schools in Chicago.

*** Lesson Details ***
I focus on the basic piano technique skills when I start with a new student, it includes good posture of the body, good hand shape, firm fingertips, loose arm weight, good position of each finger, and flexible wrist. I always look for a rich tone production when playing each key of the keyboard in order to create a beautiful musical discourse throughout the piano piece.

When the student is from 3 to 6 years old I use the Suzuki method. When the student is older than 6 I combine the traditional and Suzuki method having great results with the student's performances.

My Philosophy: All my students learn to play piano in an artistry, confident, and joyful way.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in living room with upright piano, couches, bookshelves, etc. Parents can sit in on lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide copies of some piano works. But I also expect my students to buy their own books and have their own instrument.

*** Specialties ***
For beginners I use either the Faber or Thomson method. I can teach the Suzuki method too. I specialize in Classical music, but I can also teach pop music for piano.

My girls started taking lessons from Mr. Garcia at age 4. He is an excellent instructor and keeps lessons and weekly practice assignments fun and challenging. He uses a combination of methods to best suit the interests of each of my daughters. They really look forward to their weekly lessons. I have seen significant progress in their piano skills. Mr, Garcia is very good at acknowledging their accomplishments which is extremely important for young, beginning piano players. I highly recommend him.

Tracy B.

Berwyn, IL

About Tracy

I have been teaching individual and group lessons for 12+ years. Many of my students have won trophies at the Granquist music competition and also play in local youth orchestras. My own youth string ensemble plays publicly at many popular local venues several times a year. I enjoy exposing my students to the finer points of being a professional musician such as the camaraderie, team work, creativity (creating harmonies, tailoring arrangements to fit student’s level) and of course, stage presence. I am very proud of my students. It is so gratifying to see their confidence build with each new
skill they master.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching is to combine fundamentals with “adventure.” I encourage students to experiment with their instrument and have quite a few budding composers. No two students learn in the same way, so I don’t use the same strategy for each individual. I believe music should be fun and rewarding. I like to expose students to many different types of music, i.e.; jazz, pop, blues, folk and of course, classical. Students are more likely to practice music that speaks to their personality.

My teaching environment is very laid back. I expect my students to practice, but I don’t read them the riot act if they show up to a lesson not having practiced much the week before. I encourage them to practice more the next week and I give them strategies for how to fit practice time into their schedule along with the most efficient way to practice their pieces.

I encourage parents to sit in on their child’s lesson, but I don’t require it. The more a parent is informed about their child’s goals, the better they are able to assist, support and facilitate the student’s practice. Involved parents contribute greatly to a child’s success.

I love teaching adults too! It is never too late to learn an instrument and the rewards carry over into all aspects of life. As with children, music makes us all smarter. Research proves this. We learn complicated spacial and math skills without even realizing it; we’re having too much fun!

I have annual recitals for private students. I speak Spanish.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement studio finished and separate from house

*** Travel Equipment ***
Sometimes music. I can refer students to instrument rental or purchase places, but do not have instruments to provide. I can obtain music for the students if they prefer, otherwise I will tell them what and where to buy.

*** Specialties ***
I use Suzuki and other books for material, but my teaching is more traditional. I use actual bowhold from start. My own invention - pinky AND thumb houses. Music reading is introduced fairly early. A little at a time and it's painless.

I’m an adult with a fair amount of previous musical experience but absolutely none with a stringed instrument. Tracy’s approach for that kind of beginner is ideal. She is firm about establishing sound fundamental technique from day 1 and building on it with practice pieces that provide just the right amount of challenge. She is encouraging and phenomenally patient. If technique problems or incipient bad habits arise as more complicated material is taken on, she is all over them and always has corrective measures to pull out of her (extensive) bag of teaching tricks. I would recommend her to anyone interested in learning a new instrument.

Tracy got the ball rolling right away! Only a 30 minute lesson, but more than enough to give me the tools to keep learning over the week. You can tell she really knows her stuff, and she has a bunch of ready to go instructional papers for beginners like myself. (I'm an adult beginner, 26 learning piano for the first time!) She gaged my learning speed on the fly and was tailoring the lesson to my needs as we went, which was really cool. Great teacher, very flexible and talented. I would definitely recommend her!

In 35 years of playing and hanging around wannabees, John is the genuine musician! Anyone really wanting to learn correctly needs John. I recommend him 100%.
