WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn 5 Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
1. Pitch
2. Rhythm
3. Breath
4. Voice
5. Diction
Pitch
Tone is the use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.
Lessons 8/9/10 Rehearsal for recital TBA
*Each lesson to begin with a brief review of previous. Copies of previous lessons/homework assignments to be distributed at each meeting

I am a classically trained singer living, working, and teaching in NYC. I have a degree in vocal performance from The University of Maryland at College Park. While in the D.C. Metro area I performed as a chorister and soloist at The National Shrine, Metropolitan A.M.E Church, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. My exposure to a wide range of music, from baroque to contemporary gospel and musical theater, has strongly influenced my teaching. My goal is always to help a student develop their own understanding and experience of singing in a way that is fun, interactive, and personal
while also progressively building a strong technique.

My lessons are generally split between technical work/ warm-ups and repertoire. I like to adapt my concepts to a students individual personality and capability, in that sense I am flexible about the approach taken to achieve optimal results. Every singer thinks and communicates differently and I see it as my job to figure out what will work best for you. I think that a foundation in a classical approach gives students the biggest toolkit which to work. Once the fundamentals are firmly established, that singer then has the ability to approach any style of music in a way that is healthy and secure.

Elliott is a magnificent teacher! I have been taking lessons from him for about a year now, and I don't believe I have ever made as much progress with any other teacher than I have with Elliott. Not only is he an incredibly skilled teacher but I feel he has a genuine interest in helping me succeed in reaching my goals as a singer. Perhaps his greatest asset as an instructor is in his approach. His teaching methods have been tailored to fit the skill level that I am at and are specific to the goals I wish to accomplish. I highly recommend him to anyone who is looking to advance their skills as a singer, whether it be for writing and performing your own songs to preparing for a broadway musical.

I have just completed my first five lessons with Mr. Archer and I must say that I made the best choice when I chose him as my vocal coach. I have no formal vocal training and Mr. Archer was able to work with me at my level. His lessons are productive, and with patience and encouragement I am begin to truly enjoy the experience.

I would highly recommend him as a vocal coach. He is a great person to work with.

Lessons take place at my home studio. Lessons may be recorded on my professional recording equipment or you may bring your own recording devices. This is an excellent learning tool. I teach my students how to extend their range, increase breath control and the freedom of their body in order to enable a free and easy produced vocal tone. I teach song repertoire to the student's particular musical style choices. I also work with students that wish to write their own songs so that their musical ideas can be heard clearly and precisely. A guitar is available for students if they wish to use it to accompany themselves. I teach my students how to deal with performance anxiety . Students are presented in recitals twice a year and performance classes are held once a month in addition to the private lessons.

I have so many different things I teach. If you are looking for a voice teacher, I definitely can be of help. I have been singing all of my life. I sing in many different genres like pop, gospel, R&B, and classical. I can even help if you want to be an opera singer, as I am studying to be one myself at the Aaron Copland of Music. First things we would start to do is learn how to breathe. After the student understands good breath, then we will apply it to actual singing.
