April S.

Bronx, NY

I'm a 'classically trained' voice teacher with extensive training in dance and drama;
a liberal arts degree from Columbia University/Master of Arts Education from City College of NY.
Before settling into a music career, worked as a dance instructor, for the City of NY and received congrats from John Lindsey, then mayor, for outstanding achievement.
As an actor, performed in several off-Broadway plays and was a principal in the “Broadway tour”, ”Pulitzer prize ” winning play, “No Place to be Somebody.” I've performed through the years as a vocalist with a trio and as a ONE WOMAN SHOW at various night spots, concert halls and social events. As a voice coach I've had the good fortune to teach the skills and techniques of the art of singing.
Singing is the joy I share as a performer and as a teacher. Anyone can learn to sing; and do it on a superior level. It takes desire and the willingness to practice the skills necessary until the goal is achieved.
The journey is worth it!

WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn 5 Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
1. Pitch
2. Rhythm
3. Breath
4. Voice
5. Diction
Pitch
Tone is the use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.

Technique is number 1! And before you even get to the vocal work, Breathing technique is key! So we will begin with that, and work forward. The Ultimate goal is to get your Technique working so well for you that you don't have to think about it, it begins to happen automatically. Ive been teaching voice privately over the last 5 years, and doing vocal workshops as well.

About Lothair

Hi,
I'm Lothair E, originally from Chicago. I'm a great lover of all music! I've been singing since I was 5 years old. Got my BFA in Musical Theatre from Carnegie Mellon University, and have been singing and acting all over the world for the last 27 years. I've worked extensively in Europe.. Germany , the UK, and New Zealand. In the States I've done Off Broadway, and regional theatre. Roles I've played are Papa the Old Steam Train in STARLIGHT EXPRESS 2,976 performances, Sister Mary Hubert in the Original Off Broadway production of NUNSENSE A-MEN, The Voice of the Plant in LITTLE SHOP OF
HORRORS as well as many others. Its important to enjoy the work you are doing. We can have a good laugh while working, but I can also push a little harder when necessary.

Lothair is an amazing teacher. He is very attentive and quick to gather your strengths and weaknesses. If there is an exercise that is giving you a hard time, he is patient, but actively tries to find tricks and tips to help you better grasp the concept. He is very thorough when teaching breathing and singing techniques. Lothair gives positive feedback, as well as constructive criticism, which is essential when honing in on a skill such as singing. Not only is he a great teacher, he is a wonderful person and brings so much joy to every class. As a naturally shy person, it typically takes a while for me to feel comfortable around someone, so I was pleasantly surprised at how effortlessly he made me feel at ease. I am so grateful to be able to learn from Lothair.

Deborah C.

New York, NY

Dear Future Students,

I want to make your voice shine! My goal is to help you reach your goal of being a singer. I will help you anyway I can. We're going to have lots of fun learning different techniques. However, the most important things is getting to sing not only great, but also very healthy so that you can have a long career.

About Deborah

I have so many different things I teach. If you are looking for a voice teacher, I definitely can be of help. I have been singing all of my life. I sing in many different genres like pop, gospel, R&B, and classical. I can even help if you want to be an opera singer, as I am studying to be one myself at the Aaron Copland of Music. First things we would start to do is learn how to breathe. After the student understands good breath, then we will apply it to actual singing.

I also teach Italian, and have taught the language for 3 years in a private school. I lived in Italy for a while and I jus
t love the language. If anyone needs a tutor, I can help!

I also teach art history, and art as far as drawing and painting. So if any parent wants for their child learn how to express themselves through painting or drawing, I can do that as well!!

I love to do all of these things, as I have a great passion for them! I hope I can inspire someone else.

I have had 5 lessons with Deborah so far and I intend to continue for many years. She is hands down one of the best teachers I have ever had.

She not only makes you feel comfortable and confident with your voice, but she knows how to challenge you to bring out notes and tones that you never knew you could sing. Whether you are a novice or more experienced, she really knows how to tailor the lessons to your goals and expertise.

The location of the lesson is great as well. There is a piano there and ample space to stand and sing. If I could give her 10 stars, I would.

I have had three lessons with Deborah so far and in this short amount of time I already feel like I'm learning so much. What I love about her is that she really caters the lesson to you. If I'm not grasping something, she'll change her approach so that I can understand. She can be nit picky, but I think it's a plus because it means she won't sit there listening to you do something wrong. She'll stop you and correct you so that you don't fall into bad habits and potentially end up damaging your vocal cords.

She's very encouraging and will point out what you're doing well along with what you need to work on. At the end of each session she asks you to tell her what you like about the lesson/what she can improve on to help you for the next lesson. You can tell she cares about her students. On my first lesson, she said I'm welcome to send her recordings or text her with questions to avoid practicing anything incorrectly in between sessions. I'm looking forward to my fourth lesson coming up this week and would highly recommend her to other students.
