Daniel R.

Somerville, MA

About Daniel

I love to sing, and I love to teach. Private lessons are a great place for both. Whether you're already passionate about music, or just dipping your feet in the water, I can personalize lessons to meet your needs. For me, seeing a student grow as a musician is a reward in itself. But the biggest rewards should be yours: a stronger voice, a deeper understanding of music, a whole body involved in making music, an enjoyable effort, and a growing independence to handle musical and technical difficulties over time.

My background:
I am an experienced tenor vocalist, with over 11 years of pri
vate vocal study, a BA in music from Williams College, and further study in vocal pedagogy (how to teach voice) with a Longy professor. I sing currently with the Cantata Singers, Labyrinth Choir, Stämbandet, MetroWest Choral Artists, Terpsichore, . I have taught voice on faculty at Camp Encore/Coda, music composition with Classroom Cantatas, and private voice lessons out of my home studio, currently in Somerville. I've also taught for 2 after school programs and 3 summer camps. I've studied piano, both classical and jazz, for a total of 15 years. I have studied a variety of musical topics at college, from theory and composition to singing and conducting, to music technology, recording and engineering. I've performed and directed in diverse styles ranging from early music to broadway musicals, jazz to classic rock, American to Swedish.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your voice is simultaneously the most natural, intuitive instrument we know, and among the most complex. Every person's voice is unique, so lessons are not about fitting your voice to some imagined ideal. Rather, lessons are an opportunity to learn how to utilize your strengths, minimize your weaknesses, while maintaining your own unique sound.

You'll learn how to:
- Use your breath effectively to support your voice.
- Reduce tension, to keep your voice healthy and help your voice last longer.
- Make more sound with less muscle work, through resonance.
- Involve your whole body, to produce a fuller sound.
- Make good artistic choices, which reflect your own unique perspective.
...and much more, according to your goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio room with full weighted keyboard and seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can reliably reach students 5 miles away, traveling by bike or public transit depending on the student's location.

I prefer students to have a piano or keyboard, though we can work without one if necessary. My keyboard is too bulky to be carried around for each lesson. If a keyboard is not available, we can work without one, and I will bring a tuning fork for starting pitches.

*** Specialties ***
I sing in a variety of styles, including classical, broadway, and jazz, both sacred and secular, from around the world. I have extensive knowledge of music theory, and 15 years experience as a pianist. Although I do not currently teach piano, my ability to accompany vocalists during lessons is very helpful for students.

Daniel R is absolutely a terrific instructor. He provides clear, concise instructions. His use of voice exercises are extremely helpful and if not correctly done, he changes them for comfort. He does reuse the exercises the next visit so you, the student, are eventually able to grasp them comfortably. His skillful playing is terrific also, when improvising music. He is highly knowledgeable and very helpful.

Kristen B.

Boston, MA

I've been teaching this genre since beginning my vocal studio in 2005. I usually teach this as a supplement to basic vocal technique, unless a student is particularly motivated to concentrate on musical theater.

About Kristen

I want to dispel the myth that only a select few are "gifted" with beautiful voices. Singing is like a sport; it is a skill requiring refined muscular coordination, which anyone can improve with practice and focused instruction.

My teaching experience encompasses students of all ages and abilities. My specialty is in classical voice, with a focus in opera and art song. I get a deep feeling of satisfaction from watching my students achieve their personal singing goals, and have sent many on to receive top ratings at vocal competitions and college music scholarships.

*** Lesson Detai
ls ***
My students describe me as "strict but nice". I encourage my students to set their expectations high, and then provide the tools to reach those goals over time. I love to work with musicians of all levels, as long as they are curious and committed to a "work hard/play hard" philosophy.

Repertoire will vary depending on your musical background and your interests and goals. I am comfortable teaching and performing folk song, art songs in German, French and Italian, and operatic arias. We will choose music together to find pieces that will aid your vocal development and that you enjoy singing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, music stands, rehearsal rooms, seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
My focus of my undergraduate and Master's studies was in operatic vocal performance. I also have experience with choral and vocal jazz.

Excellent ability to teach the new or accomplished vocalist.

Kristen is wonderful, she is able to make her instructions understandable to the beginner and inspire him to try new things. It's refreshing to see my young son focusing his style with a beautiful classical edge.

As well as repertoire selection and preparation.

Including warm-ups, repertoire, vocal technique, performance practice, breathing, phonation, pitch, diction, and musicality.

About Mia

I am a professional singer and actress with opera and musical theater credits. Singing is my passion! I love to sing, and I LOVE to teach others to sing! The human voice is the most natural instrument of all, and helping others to bring out the beauty of the natural instrument that lies within them is something to which I am very devoted. I like to make students feel comfortable and at ease in lessons, and you will find that I am very warm and friendly!

Every student is unique, with their own strengths, their own areas for improvement, and their own preference for certain styles of sing
ing. I can help you find what style makes your heart sing!

I have a broad range of credits, including the Broadway National Tour of Fiddler On The Roof with Theodore Bikel (Tzeitel understudy), and Off-Broadway in Fiorello (Marie) and The Rose Tattoo (Flora). Among my many regional credits are Oliver at the Chiswick Park Theater in Sudbury, MA (Nancy), Camelot with Noel Harrison at the North Shore Music Theater in Beverly, MA (Nimue/Guinevere understudy), and Is There Life After High School with Desi Arnaz, Jr. and Sharon Lawrence at the Burt Reynolds Theater in Jupiter, FL. I've been taking classes with Mia for a year now, and she has been the best teacher anyone could ever dream of. I was terrified of trying acting for the first time, I thought because I was starting off late in the game I may be judged, or criticized, but as soon as Mia greeted me she made me feel as though I was immediately family. She is supportive, encouraging, and will give 110% at training you for any type of acting you wish to pursue! She even met with me for multiple classes per week before big auditions. I can proudly say I am now accepted and will be attending my first choice conservatory for a BFA in Contemporary Theater! Mia has the warmest, most beautiful heart of gold that I've ever seen. Thank you for absolutely everything you've done for me, Mia. I can't wait until you can see me in my shows!

Mia helped me to prepare my audition for a prestigious arts high school. I was shy and nervous, but by the end of my classes with her I was ready to audition. I nailed the audition and was one of twelve to enter the theater program that year. I can't thank Mia enough! She brings a grace and energy to her teaching, along with her incredible experience as a professional performer.

Singing lessons for students interested in incorporating his or her technique into Broadway singing. Lessons would include ear training, technique training, acting, and learning musical theatre repertoire.

From 2013-15, Sara lived in Southern C
alifornia, where she began her graduate studies in classical voice and opera at the University of Redlands. Two lessons in and I've already seen a dramatic change in quality. I've been with vocal coaches who seem to change their teaching styles almost every other week, and that can be detrimental to any student. I can tell Sara is confident in her abilities and techniques, and I recommend her to any singer, beginner or veteran.

Jennifer K.

Quincy, MA

I believe that healthy singing is the basis for singing any genre of music from Baroque to Broadway. Therefore, I stress the basic bel canto principles of singing with every student: breath support, natural vocal placement, and musicality. Every student will have the opportunity to develop musical skills such as sight reading, ear training, music theory, and diction, but all in the context of a fun and relaxed environment. Most importantly, singing is fun and good for the soul!!

About Jennifer

Hello! My name is Jen and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2003 and have loved helping my students find their singing voice, become more confident in performing, and discover the joy of music! I graduated from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2001 and earned a degree in Vocal Performance. I'm a caring and supportive teacher who is always looking for new ways to inspire and challenge my students. I believe that with a good singing technique, you can sing any style of music. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

I have been working with Jen on music for over ten years. Just recently, in the last 6 months or so, I went to her to help me tackle a specific problem in my voice. Within just a few lessons, she developed an insight into how to help me, and we began to make real progress. I now have a specific pathway in which I am confident that with persistent work, I can overcome this problem. Jen has real insight into the human voice, and true compassion and patience when working with others.
