Joshua F.

Allston, MA

Singing is one of the most challenging and rewarding areas of musical performance. It's so personal and expressive that a lot of us feel uncomfortable approaching the voice at all. I've been singing and performing for over a decade. Using proper breathing technique and customized warm-ups I can help you become the best possible singer you can be! The first step is always the hardest but I am confident that we can do it!

About Joshua

I eat/breathe/sleep music. From writing and conducting my first A Capella piece in high school to playing in bands that have toured around the world (The Fates, Ben Levin Group), I am a music machine! I value nothing more than finding that passion in others and working together to turn musical fantasies into realities.

From grade school to high school I took rigorous classical piano lessons. In 2006-07 I attended two summer programs at Berklee College of Music where I studied jazz/rock performance, and continued to study jazz piano at Washington University.

At Boston University, I stu
died classical music composition/theory, and was accepted to for a dual degree in Music Composition, Psychology, but decided to pursue music as a minor in order to allow more time for gigging. Since relocating to Boston, I have performed 250+ shows in various ensembles around the greater Boston area.

As your private instructor, I am here to give you the most rewarding, interesting, and enjoyable lessons in the UNIVERSE. My lessons are are catered to your specific goals and where you are at, beginner to advance, 5-1000 years old. I am here to get you to where you want to go, whether that's taking up a new hobby or becoming a beastly virtuoso. Together, we will do it!

In our lessons we will work on:

- Your favorite songs, any style
- Writing your own music
- How to learn music by ear
- How to read music notation and chord sheets.
- How to record/produce yourself
- really, seriously, ANYTHING YOU WANT!

I know what it's like to have a teacher that is uninspiring, or to be told that a certain kind of music is the "right kind to learn," when all you want to do is jam out to your favorite songs on the radio. I've been there. That's not what I'm about. I'll teach you how to play whatever it is you want to learn, whether that's the complete works of Bach or the latest One Direction song. Let's do it.

I started taking piano lessons with Josh a year ago and I am happy to say it is a great experience! Josh is an amazing teacher. He is only focused on what his student want and build his lessons around that to further their growth. Josh is flexible with scheduling lessons and is accommodating when lessons need to be changed or cancelled. He is overall a fun, interactive, and patient teach. I highly recommend him!

I had weekly lessons on introductory singing (warmup exercises, singing pop songs and choir songs, and reading music sheet) for 4 months.

Enjoyable, flexibility in learning what I wanted to learn, and building on what I practice at home = best instructor ever.

Alaina C.

Roslindale, MA

About Alaina

ABOUT ME

I began taking both voice and piano lessons at the age of 11, after years of sitting outside my older sisters' clarinet lessons and wishing to study music, myself. I fell in love with music at my very first lesson, and knew that it was what I would do with my life. I went on to attend New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where I received my Bachelor of Music in vocal performance, and then onto Longy School of Music of Bard College, where I am currently working on my Masters in vocal performance and continuing piano as a secondary instrument. I am the co-owner of The Creativ
e Musician and have experience teaching piano students ranging from 4-year-old beginners to experienced adults and voice students ranging from novices to conservatory-bound high-school seniors. I am currently located in Roslindale, MA, and am available to teach both in my studio and in students' homes in the Roslindale/Jamaica Plain/West Roxbury area.

LESSON DETAILS

First and foremost, I always strive to make lessons engaging, enjoyable, and gently challenging. Mastering something that you find difficult is one of the most rewarding aspects of music lessons, and I believe that all students are capable of surpassing their own expectations and surprising themselves with their abilities. I try to create a welcoming and creative learning environment where students will feel comfortable exploring new techniques and ways of thinking about music.

Musical literacy and a healthy technique are vitally important for both pianists and singers in any genre, and I hope to impart this to my students while helping them to discover the joy of music and performance. I tailor lessons to help each individual student reach his/her goals, and welcome all ages and levels into my studio.

STUDIO

My home studio has a grand piano and a seating/waiting area for parents and siblings.

STUDENT MATERIALS

I will provide reference books and other teaching materials that will be used in lessons. I expect my students to have a piano (or full-sized keyboard with 88 weighted keys, an attached pedal, and a proper bench) for home practice and to reimburse me for books to be used at home.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello!

Thank you for your interest in piano, singing, or public speaking lessons. My philosophy is based on teaching 5 important things that performers must practice:
Singers/Speakers -- articulation, breathing/phrasing, rhythm, tone and a personal connection to the material.
Pianists -- technique, tone, rhythm, mechanics, and expression

I am a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and received my conservatory degree and additional training in New York City. I can prepare you to audition, perform, present, and have fun performing better at school, at work, at home and on stage

As I train to become a certified voice therapist, I am able to help singers and professional speakers improve the health and longevity of their voice. I can work with students who have asthma, nodes, hoarseness, English as a second language, stuttering, or other language difficulties.

A variety of lessons for the beginner and the professional are available for customizing your goals.

Speaking, singing, performing, and music are for all! I look forward to sharing our voices and music together.

Let's get started!
Ms. Annie

Returning to fundamentals as an adult learner is very difficult and challenging but, at least in my case, very necessary. Annie has been a wonderful piano and voice teacher guiding me through this process - patient and kind, tolerant of my poor practice habits, and able to help me work on all aspects of my music. I would highly recommend her to any prospective student, and hope to continue working with her well into the future.

Opera Voice · In studio
Mark is a gifted voice teacher and I would highly recommend him for singers of all ability levels. I am a baritone who has an undergraduate degree in vocal performance and has been singing classical music, including opera roles, for 13 years. I am singing a couple solo pieces this summer (one English art song and one African-American spiritual) and was looking for a voice teacher to help me check-in on my technique. I took four lessons with Mark from June to July 2015.

Mark has an incredibly warm style. I immediately felt comfortable singing in front of him and hearing his feedback. He immediately zoned in on my “ah” vowel, which was too covered/dark. Over the next few lessons, we continued to improve the vowel and work to better release the breath. In my experience, modifying one aspect of the technique often reveals other areas than need work as well. Mark patiently helped me identify these areas and he provided some excellent tools and techniques to improve my overall sound. Mark’s instruction was consistently clear—he skillfully combined metaphors to describe how the voice works with explanations of vocal physiology. I definitely feel more prepared to sing these solo pieces next week!

I highly recommend Mark as a teacher for both new and experienced singers. It’s clear that Mark has a strong command of the fundamentals of singing and would be an excellent teacher for someone who wants to build a solid foundation. Furthermore, Mark would be a great teacher for more experienced singers that want to return to vocal training or fine-tune an established technique.

Before beginning voice lessons, I had my suspicions and often wondered how someone could improve your voice like any other instrument. After a few lessons with Mark, it quickly became clear how this is possible. Through Mark's incorporation of unique warm-ups, intensive training, and a bright attitude that maintains a fun atmosphere each class, I realized how, with the proper teacher, one is able to open up and improve upon their voice in ways that wouldn't have been possible without lessons. However, not only are lessons necessary, but the right teacher as well. I found that with Mark and I strongly encourage anyone else considering voice lessons to try to find a teacher similar to him, although I'm not sure how easy that would be.
