Somerville, MA

With my extensive solo performance and teaching experience, I believe all singers can find their unique sound through solid technique and creativity.

After several sessions (at least 10), students should have a basic understanding and awareness of the following characteristics with their voices:

*healthy breath control (understanding the differences between under and over supporting)
*healthy vowel shape: a, e, i, o, u
*awareness of their vocal registers and the differences between head, mixed, and chest voice
*an ability to descend from head voice into a healthy mixed register without flipping into chest voice
*3-5 new musical selections (give or take as needed)
*8-10 new technical exercises to use on student's own time
*an outline for personal practice
*developed musical instincts with rhythm, melody, harmony, intonation, and singing with accompaniment
*healthy posture
*performance etiquette

About Jessica

Hello! I am a soprano and I remain both an active performer of various concert repertoire and a teacher to students of all ages and levels. After receiving my masters in early music voice at the Yale School of Music and my undergraduate in voice/ music ed at the University of Michigan, I now make my living full-time as a musician. My biggest goal for teaching is to help inspire my students to find their own unique voices through the guidance of healthy vocal technique, proper breath control, awareness of the body, and sensitive musicianship.

Whether you are looking to continue on your v
ocal musical journey as a longtime vocalist, or beginning to explore your own musical voice, I am excited to meet you at your level and help you work toward your specific musical goals. My own performance background includes music genres from the medieval, renaissance, baroque, contemporary, folk, jazz, rock and musical theatre. As evidenced by my own versatile musical background, I appreciate and welcome a breadth of musical styles. No matter what genre, I believe in helping students sing authentically and healthily, and most importantly, have fun!

**As I am also a regularly performing musician, please note that weekly availability for lessons will fluctuate due to changing rehearsal and performance schedules. For this reason, I strongly recommend students sign up for Unscheduled Lessons, which we can then schedule on a week-to-week basis.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons may vary, depending on the needs and interests of the students, however a general outline remains consistent. Students can expect to be working on both a combination of isolated technical exercises as well as relevant repertoire in each lesson. An exercise usually precedes the repertoire to help focus on a specific technical issue (like breath, or legato, for example). It is recommended for more moderate to advanced students to consider 60 minute sessions as it is helpful to have more time to work on specific exercises and then implement them into repertoire. Beginning students may start with 30 minutes, and as time goes on, may wish to progress to longer sessions as desired.

There are other goals to seek out during lessons, yet ideally, these core values are largely focused on and understood by the student within the first set of sessions. While none of these concepts may be mastered immediately, it is important that the student gain an awareness of these traits and always strive to work towards them.

I had my first voice lessons with Jess, and she has helped me improve immensely in just a few short months! Not only is Jess incredibly encouraging, she also was very patient and was able to explain how to control my voice to produce a whole different sound than before - she also helped me become more aware of my body and how to place my sound. Many, many thanks!!

Jessica is a real professional and a great teacher!

Jessica impressed me from my first lesson with her professionalism and also her niceness. She is an active performer and really knows what younger singers are going through. She's not judgmental but she lets you know how you can improve. We get a lot done in every lesson. The hour just flies by! I really look forward to it every week.

Singing is one of the most challenging and rewarding areas of musical performance. It's so personal and expressive that a lot of us feel uncomfortable approaching the voice at all. I've been singing and performing for over a decade. Using proper breathing technique and customized warm-ups I can help you become the best possible singer you can be! The first step is always the hardest but I am confident that we can do it!

About Joshua

Hi! I'm Josh, a passionate music educator in Boston, MA. I have taught over 1000 lessons over the past three years to piano, voice, and theory students of all ages. From preparing for rock-vocal style auditions at Berklee College of Music to helping re-discovering the fun of classical piano lessons, there is nothing I enjoy more than working with students on achieving their goals. As a gigging musician and a lifetime student myself, I know what it takes to improve, master, and most importantly ENJOY your time at your instrument. Looking forward to helping you reach all your music goals!

Abo
ut me:
I eat/breathe/sleep music. From writing and conducting my first A Capella piece in high school to playing in bands that have toured around the world, music is my passion and my life! I value nothing more than finding that passion in others and working together to turn musical fantasies into realities.

From grade school to high school I took rigorous classical piano lessons. In 2006-07 I attended two summer programs at Berklee College of Music where I studied jazz/rock performance, and continued to study jazz piano at Washington University.

At Boston University, I studied classical music composition/theory, and was accepted to for a dual degree in Music Composition, Psychology, but decided to pursue music as a minor in order to allow more time for gigging. Since relocating to Boston, I have performed 250+ shows in various ensembles around the greater Boston area.

I'm 53 and play guitar pretty well but have only focused on singing in the last few months. Things weren't coming together like I wanted and I decided to take lessons. Josh has been fantastic to work with. He brings lots of enthusiasm even when working with a rank novice like me. I also appreciate how he has tailored his approach to focus on my individual goals.

I took piano lessons with Josh for several months in my home, and it was a really great experience. I have a significant classical background, and was taking lessons to learn more about jazz theory and performance. Josh has a tremendous knowledge of music theory and is also an excellent performer to boot. I made a ton of progress in a short amount of time, and I would definitely highly recommend Josh as a teacher!

Vasiliy M.

Somerville, MA

I work with people in regard to singing lessons since 2004 in both academic settings and private face-to-face instructions. The lesson's plans and general direction that it takes during the course of study substantially depends on the student's interests and preferences. Along with main subjects that motivates students most in taking voice lessons ( such as learning new songs from the contemporary popular repertoire, for instance), I will offer my prospective students basic training in general musicianship; this would enable people to sing, read written music, and understand the very basics of music theory. With such advantages at their hands, my students will be able to expand their singing repertoire and to move, probably, to another styles of music for singing and enjoying it for the sake of people's personal aesthetical development.

About Vasiliy

Hello,
I am Vasiliy M, Boston University School of Music Alumnus (DMA in Composition). We dwell in Boston since Fall 2002; before that time , we lived in New York, where I studied Composition at Mannes College, The New School For Music. I received both BM, and MM degrees from Mannes in 1999, and 2001, respectively. Before an arrival to US, in 1994, I studied Jazz Performance, Electric Bass Major, and Classical Composition, at Moldova State Conservatory, from 1988 to 1993, respectively.
I was raised in the family, where music is an essential part of its daily life; my father, Gr
igoriy, before his retirement, was a military band trombone player, and, quite naturally, I was exposed to music, and encouraged by my parents to learn playing an instrument of my choice, from my early childhood.
My mother, Anisia Kondrat'ievna, possesses both beautiful vocal abilities and perfect pitch , although she has never had a chance to develop her natural gifts any further. But I have heard my mother singing, and these moments remain one of the most touching and impressive musical experiences, that I have ever received, and remember to this very day.
Only after a considerable life experiences, abound of trials and mistakes, at the age of twenty five, I have come to a clear realization, that music remains my greatest passion, and that I would have to become a professional musician. With help and support of friends and colleagues, I have entered Community College in Soroki city, Moldova Republic, where I have studied Choral Conducting for Amateurs. I have graduated from school in May of 1988, having written a few instrumental and vocal compositions of my own, and, quite unexpectedly for myself, was invited, that summer, to visit Moldova State Conservatory, with the prospect of audition for the Composition Major. After the meeting with the Chair of the Department, I was offered an opportunity to be accepted to the Master Degree Program in Composition, provided I will have completed two years of preliminary studies of Music Theory, Music Harmony/Voice Leading, and many other related disciplines.
Why do I bring all of these facts to this Essay? I know for the fact now, that I was not ready for what was awaiting ahead of me, back then. There was no way, that I could cope with the demands of Composition Program curriculum. But I have had love for music, that my parents have implemented in me throughout my childhood; I have had natural abilities, that Heavens supplied me with: and I have had a chance to make my dream a reality, providing I do everything that I will have to, during the following years of struggles and study.
The decision was made, and my studies have begun. I have come through every mistake, defeat, and mind-barriers imaginable, and if it would not be a continuous stream of professional help and support, that I have received from my numerous teachers, mentors, and professors, along the years of study, my goals could never be attained to any modest, but real degree.
Whenever I have a chance to teach, tutor, or assist other musicians with their study, my past experience always reminds me, that any person may experience some difficulties of various nature with the learning material, from time to time, and that those difficulties should be addressed by student's teacher with the highly individual approach, however time-and effort-consuming it may be. Patience and respect, in regard to the students, have become as important aspects of teaching to me, as those of discipline and professionalism.
My studies have come to an end; I see now, that the world of music is an endless entity, for it has no boundaries, and we all have to maintain our further progress, in order to move to our chosen destinations, and to help others with their own advancements.

Sincerely
Vasiliy M.

*** Lesson Details ***
I would be more than willing to assist my prospective students with their various musical endeavors, and people's willingness to either play music instruments, take voice lessons, or to study Music Theory/ Musicianship disciplines will serve us as a starting point for our work. Through the diligent preliminary talk we will discuss various aspects of interest that my students have developed in relation to music, so we could plan and design our future lessons according to an initial discussion. My job and responsibility will be to make an intelligent assessment of my students' natural abilities for the given subject of study, to create vigorous learning atmosphere during our meetings, and to give my students professional instructions to the best of my humble abilities, for the benefits of their musical , aesthetic, and personal development. I will encourage my students to learn as much as they can, at the given moment, but I will not ever attempt to exceed people's natural capabilities. Participation in Music with love and fun should be as rewarding and valuable to the music amateur, as professional performing career ( with its highly demanding standards) stands for classically trained musicians. During our study sessions, we will work upon the goals and tasks that we have discussed at the beginning of our meetings. My ultimate goal as a teacher was and will always be to help my students discover and bring forward their best creative potentials through the intensive musical studies and practice, and, at the same time, to favor heir initial interest's transformation into a deep, serious passion.

Vasily is a wonderful teacher. He is kind, patient, and relates very well to our shy daughter. We have come to know Vasiliy as a very knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated teacher. My daughter was only 5 when she had her first piano lessons, and I was interested, most of all, in understanding whether her interest in music and the piano in a common room in our building was mature enough to begin music lessons - or not. Vasiliy gave me a very knowledgeable assessment of my daughter's readiness to begin studying music, and then went on to give her piano lessons that were right for her level and age. He definitely developed my daughter's eagerness to learn more, and left her looking forward very much to her weekly piano class. We can wholeheartedly recommend Vasily.

My studio teaches singers from beginner to advanced levels who are eager to properly use their own voice, master the fundamental notions of a healthy singing technique and how to potentiate themselves as unique artists. If you're preparing for an audition or just curious about your voice, I'll help you. The process that allowed me to become a professional Opera Singer gave me the clear notion that as a student you want to have the balance between clear/accurate concepts and a positive experience.

About Paulo

I'm a professional guitar player, an Opera Singer and also an experienced and supportive teacher. I will meet your personal goals choosing the right method for your own pace and focus on helping you to develop your artistry. If you want to know more about me just visit paulolapa.com

*******************************************************************************

GUITAR: I have a ten year experience career teaching guitar - privately and throughout official schools - to students of all ages, from curious toddlers to contemplative seniors. Prior to move to the United States, I taught at A
MVP Musical Academy (Portugal) where I also got my conservatory degree in Guitar performance. Relying on a fundamental classic technique I can guide you through every musical genre that you wish to approach and enlighten you with the best musical foundation that there is. Whether you want to learn a specific song/repertoire or you want me to guide you trough the keystones of this instrument I will always lookout for your personal satisfaction and development in the process.

I'm a recorded artist with two albums as a member of the AMVP Guitar Orchestra: Contrastes (2003) and Plaisir (2005) and appeared at prestigious venues in Portugal, Saint Peterburg (Russia), Paris (France) and Frankfurt (Germany).

SINGING: My voice studio teaches singers from beginner to advanced levels who are eager to properly use their own voice, master the fundamental notions of a healthy singing technique and how to potentiate themselves as individual artists. If you're preparing for an audition or are just curious about what you can do with your voice, I'll be glad to help you. The process that allowed me to become a professional Opera singer gave me the clear notion that as a student you want to have the balance between clear and accurate concepts and a positive experience.

Because singing was always a passion in my life I also pursued my advanced studies in Classical Voice, and as a result I graduated from Aveiro University (Portugal) in Music and Vocal Performance. My goal as a voice teacher is to help you understand the basic fundamentals of a healthy singing voice: breathing technique, clarity of tone, balance between natural resonators and clear diction - regardless of what genre you're singing. I can also assist you in the proper diction of the romantic languages (Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese).

After completing my studies in Portugal, I moved to Boston where I developed a relationship with the VOICExperience Foundation and the Savannah Voice Festival led by the great Opera legend Sherrill Milnes. While in the United States, I have performed in musical concerts, opera and musical scenes, private performances and outreach events in Savannah, Georgia, New York City, Tampa Bay, Florida and Hilton Head, South Carolina.
In Savannah I've been working regularly - throughout a series of Masterclasses - with a group of teenagers from Bethesda Academy introducing them to the Opera world and showing how to use their own voice and body as a way to fully express themselves.
