Alaina C.

Roslindale, MA

About Alaina

ABOUT ME

I began taking both voice and piano lessons at the age of 11, after years of sitting outside my older sisters' clarinet lessons and wishing to study music, myself. I fell in love with music at my very first lesson, and knew that it was what I would do with my life. I went on to attend New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where I received my Bachelor of Music in vocal performance, and then onto Longy School of Music of Bard College, where I am currently working on my Masters in vocal performance and continuing piano as a secondary instrument. I am the co-owner of The Creativ
e Musician and have experience teaching piano students ranging from 4-year-old beginners to experienced adults and voice students ranging from novices to conservatory-bound high-school seniors. I am currently located in Roslindale, MA, and am available to teach both in my studio and in students' homes in the Roslindale/Jamaica Plain/West Roxbury area.

LESSON DETAILS

First and foremost, I always strive to make lessons engaging, enjoyable, and gently challenging. Mastering something that you find difficult is one of the most rewarding aspects of music lessons, and I believe that all students are capable of surpassing their own expectations and surprising themselves with their abilities. I try to create a welcoming and creative learning environment where students will feel comfortable exploring new techniques and ways of thinking about music.

Musical literacy and a healthy technique are vitally important for both pianists and singers in any genre, and I hope to impart this to my students while helping them to discover the joy of music and performance. I tailor lessons to help each individual student reach his/her goals, and welcome all ages and levels into my studio.

STUDIO

My home studio has a grand piano and a seating/waiting area for parents and siblings.

STUDENT MATERIALS

I will provide reference books and other teaching materials that will be used in lessons. I expect my students to have a piano (or full-sized keyboard with 88 weighted keys, an attached pedal, and a proper bench) for home practice and to reimburse me for books to be used at home.

Exceptional!

My daughter started piano lessons at age 8 and switched to Alaina when she was 10. The growth has been exponential! Alaina is an incredibly talented musician and has a real skill for teaching. She is very gentle and patient, yet knows how and when to challenge a student. The music is engaging, interesting and makes learning fun. My daughter loves playing and continues to be inspired by Alaina's talents and passion. i would highly recommend Alaina without reservation!

Learn to sing any style of popular music.

Professional voice users and intermediate-advanced singers should sign up for "Music Performance" or "Speaking Voice."

About Anne

"Anne M is an experienced and supportive teacher, a jazz vocalist, pianist, composer and lyricist with a conservatory degree in jazz voice from Manhattan School of Music and advanced studies with prominent, NYC jazz piano, music theory and songwriting instructors. She is currently attending Boston University, Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and working toward becoming certified as a speech-language pathologist and vocal therapist."

*Note for Spring-Summer 2015: As I continue in my graduate school program my time is limited, but I will try my best to accommodate any s
tudent with a strong interest in improving and maintaining a regular weekly lesson schedule. Pay-as-you go scheduling is not encouraged because of time constraints and lack of consistency for maintaining steady progress and reaching your goals. Weekly students are more successful!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello!

Thank you for your interest in piano, singing, or public speaking lessons. My philosophy is based on teaching 5 important things that performers must practice:
Singers/Speakers -- articulation, breathing/phrasing, rhythm, tone and a personal connection to the material.
Pianists -- technique, tone, rhythm, mechanics, and expression

I am a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and received my conservatory degree and additional training in New York City. I can prepare you to audition, perform, present, and have fun performing better at school, at work, at home and on stage

As I train to become a certified voice therapist, I am able to help singers and professional speakers improve the health and longevity of their voice. I can work with students who have asthma, nodes, hoarseness, English as a second language, stuttering, or those other language difficulties.

Schedule your lessons now. You always have the choice to determine if you've found the right teacher. Then, a weekly lesson time will be confirmed so that steady progress can be made.

Speaking, singing, performing, and music are for all! I look forward to sharing our voices and music together.

Let's get started!
Ms. Annie

Thank you Anne. I get the most from you that one should play piano with the body in a natural state. "Nature commended should be obeyed."

I think it is incredible that you keep learning new things!

Wish you all the best in the future.

Returning to fundamentals as an adult learner is very difficult and challenging but, at least in my case, very necessary. Annie has been a wonderful piano and voice teacher guiding me through this process - patient and kind, tolerant of my poor practice habits, and able to help me work on all aspects of my music. I would highly recommend her to any prospective student, and hope to continue working with her well into the future.

Phil B.

Cambridge, MA

Everyone is born with their own unique voice which, over the course of a lifetime, acquires its own unique habits, tensions, fears, limitations, and strengths. I firmly believe that anyone can sing once they understand the basics of vocal mechanics: need, thought, breath, and sound. Together, we'll work to release old habits and tensions, strengthen the vocal muscles and reconnect with the true voice deep inside you.

About Phil

Hello! My name is Phil B., I'm a working theater artist, musician, composer, and educator based in Somerville, MA. I've taught performing arts to students ages 2-75 for the last six years with organizations like the American Repertory Theatre, Citi Performing Arts Center, 826 Boston, Boston University, Puppet Showplace Theatre, and Cambridge Public Schools.

My private lessons are completely flexible and designed to meet the needs and goals of each individual student wherever they are in their own unique creative journey.

GUITAR: Are you looking to finally play that dusty guitar that's b
een sitting in the corner forever? Has your child been begging you for lessons? Maybe you played a long time ago and want to tune up your skills, or be able to play music at your school or place of worship, or you're a singer who's looking to accompany yourself when playing gigs. I've taught students of all ages the basics of guitar from posture to theory, reading, chords, strumming, picking, and relaxation techniques to make this instrument feel like an extension of your own body.

VOICE/SINGING: Everyone is born with their own unique voice which, over the course of a lifetime, acquires its own unique habits, tensions, fears, limitations, and strengths. I firmly believe that anyone can sing once they understand the basics of vocal mechanics: need, thought, breath, and sound. Together, we'll work to release old habits and tensions, strengthen the vocal muscles and reconnect with the true voice deep inside you.

SONGWRITING: Is there a tune you can't get out of your head? Maybe that perfect rhyme seems just out of reach, or the next chord sounds all wrong? I've written countless songs for children, crafted original English lyrics and translations for foreign artists, and composed music for poetry and prose. My feedback system will help you communicate your thoughts and emotions clearly through words and music while fostering your own unique style, sound, and personal aesthetic.

ACTING/STORYTELLING: Looking to nail that next audition? Hoping to deepen your relationship with text? Do you get nervous when asked to speak in public? In private acting/storytelling lessons, we'll discuss tools and strategies to overcome onstage jitters, analyze and interpret text, connect with the body, and release blocks and tensions in order to let any story tell itself through you.

I am able to travel to anyone within walking distance of an MBTA station/stop or host students at my home studio between Porter and Union Squares in Somerville.

My goal as a teacher is to help each student recognize and actualize their own latent ability, passion, point-of-view, and spirit through performance. Every artistic venture is a new journey, and I'm eager to walk a part of it alongside you.

My studio teaches singers from beginner to advanced levels who are eager to properly use their own voice, master the fundamental notions of a healthy singing technique and how to potentiate themselves as unique artists. If you're preparing for an audition or just curious about your voice, I'll help you. The process that allowed me to become a professional Opera Singer gave me the clear notion that as a student you want to have the balance between clear/accurate concepts and a positive experience.

About Paulo

I'm a professional guitar player, an Opera Singer and also an experienced and supportive teacher. I will meet your personal goals choosing the right method for your own pace and focus on helping you to develop your artistry. If you want to know more about me just visit paulolapa.com

*******************************************************************************

GUITAR: I have a ten year experience career teaching guitar - privately and throughout official schools - to students of all ages, from curious toddlers to contemplative seniors. Prior to move to the United States, I taught at A
MVP Musical Academy (Portugal) where I also got my conservatory degree in Guitar performance. Relying on a fundamental classic technique I can guide you through every musical genre that you wish to approach and enlighten you with the best musical foundation that there is. Whether you want to learn a specific song/repertoire or you want me to guide you trough the keystones of this instrument I will always lookout for your personal satisfaction and development in the process.

I'm a recorded artist with two albums as a member of the AMVP Guitar Orchestra: Contrastes (2003) and Plaisir (2005) and appeared at prestigious venues in Portugal, Saint Peterburg (Russia), Paris (France) and Frankfurt (Germany).

SINGING: My voice studio teaches singers from beginner to advanced levels who are eager to properly use their own voice, master the fundamental notions of a healthy singing technique and how to potentiate themselves as individual artists. If you're preparing for an audition or are just curious about what you can do with your voice, I'll be glad to help you. The process that allowed me to become a professional Opera singer gave me the clear notion that as a student you want to have the balance between clear and accurate concepts and a positive experience.

Because singing was always a passion in my life I also pursued my advanced studies in Classical Voice, and as a result I graduated from Aveiro University (Portugal) in Music and Vocal Performance. My goal as a voice teacher is to help you understand the basic fundamentals of a healthy singing voice: breathing technique, clarity of tone, balance between natural resonators and clear diction - regardless of what genre you're singing. I can also assist you in the proper diction of the romantic languages (Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese).

After completing my studies in Portugal, I moved to Boston where I developed a relationship with the VOICExperience Foundation and the Savannah Voice Festival led by the great Opera legend Sherrill Milnes. While in the United States, I have performed in musical concerts, opera and musical scenes, private performances and outreach events in Savannah, Georgia, New York City, Tampa Bay, Florida and Hilton Head, South Carolina.
In Savannah I've been working regularly - throughout a series of Masterclasses - with a group of teenagers from Bethesda Academy introducing them to the Opera world and showing how to use their own voice and body as a way to fully express themselves.
