Caitlin C.

Winters, CA

I love working with all ages and experience levels! I specialize in early music and can teach Baroque violin as well. I typically use Suzuki books for my younger students and beginners, but if you have specific requests I love incorporating them into lessons! I can't wait to meet you!

About Caitlin

I am a professional violinist and violist living in Winters, CA, frequenting Sacramento and the Bay Area. I have a passion for performing many different styles and instruments and want to share that with my students! Nothing makes me happier than igniting the drive for music in my students and seeing what music can do for them. I have Bachelors and Masters degrees in music performance from the University of North Texas and the Eastman School of Music, and I am Suzuki trained. I have spent most of my life surrounded by Suzuki teachers and students and am very comfortable with the method! I also
love to teach with the traditional methods and am willing to find what works best for each student individually. It is most important to me that the lessons are fun! I find that everyone learns best when they are engaged and truly enjoying themselves. Each and every student should be able to experience what learning music can do for them, and I wish to pass along my knowledge and passion in every lesson.

*** Lesson Details ***
Expect lots of questions! I love to engage my students by asking them questions about their own playing. We learn together, solve problems together, and play together. The lessons are about YOU. I am willing and able to change my teaching style based on what will yield results most efficiently and with the best quality. A lot of my teaching is done with the Suzuki violin books. If there are any specific songs or pieces you want to learn, we can make that happen! In our first lessons, we will decide together your personal, individualized goals and how to achieve them the best way.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have my own instruments and teaching materials/books. I supply tape for fingerboards and bows as well.
I expect students to have their own instruments and to buy the music books (most likely Suzuki) that we use in their lessons so they can practice.

*** Specialties ***
I am Suzuki trained and can teach all levels in the Suzuki method. I can also teach traditionally, without Suzuki method if the student/parent prefers. I also specialize in Baroque performance practice, and can teach Baroque violin, baroque viola, and viola da gamba.

Being the parent of a 5 year old daughter, my wife and I were quite careful on choosing what we considered to be a good violin teacher, especially given the fact we would be bringing this person into our home (in-home lessons). From the beginning Caitlin demonstrated being capable of teaching a child, making every effort to make classes fun, and to encourage our daughter to practice. Her professionalism, patience and dedication were visible in all her lessons. We were quite sad to hear she was moving outside of NY. Searching for a new teacher proved quite difficult as she set the bar quite high.

In summary, Caitlin not only met, but exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend her.

Irish, folk and Bluegrass styles, tunes, scales, improvisation techniques

About Marc

I've been playing music since I was 14 years old. I studied classical guitar at State University in Buffalo, NY. and also studied guitar at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I love just about every style of music. I mostly play Celtic, Bluegrass, American traditional, jazz, and classical. I also love to improvise.
My goal is to get my students results so they feel that they are really making progress. I do this by incorporating practice exercises, ear training and some music theory.
Music theory and reading music can be intimidating for beginning students. So I like to get you pla
ying first and add theory a little at a time so you can better understand it through experience and it makes learning more fun.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio has a piano, acoustic guitars, mandolins and other instruments.Students receive sheet music and written materials.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Sheet music and other written materials.

*** Specialties ***
I play a lot of Irish fiddle tunes and also know a lot of American Folk styles, popular music and some jazz. I play some classical pieces on the mandolin and some bluegrass. I consider improvisation one of my strengths.

I have been playing the mandolin for about four years now and have had several different teachers, of which Marc is by far the best one I have had. I wish I had started with him. Marc is very patient and works with you to bring out your best effort. He challenges me with interesting music to play, helps me to understand the piece and shows me different ways to finger the notes. When I started with Marc two months ago I was playing hornpipes and dances and now I've moved up to Bach and Vivaldi. Marc is also an accomplished instrument maker.

Larisa K.

Hercules, CA

Violin, viola instructor, performing art.
Classical music. Mostly traditional Russian method of violin teaching, also Suzuki.

About Larisa

Began violin lessons at age 8.
At age 15 was accepted into the elite program at the School of Music in Odessa, Ukraine.
Continued on to one of the premier music Universities in the world: Kiev State Conservatory, where I received a Masters degree in Teaching and Performing arts.
Throughout my higher education I have held Violin Instructor positions first at the Kiev Music School and then at the Conservatory.

My Professional Career in Ukraine and USA includes performance with numerous symphony and chamber groups, such as Kiev Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera,
San Jose Symphony.
I am passionate and dedicated to my Art which is reflected in my teaching style and in the results my students consistently achieve.
My ultimate goal as an instructor is to convey to my students the beauty of making music. I define success to be the ability to see the joy that playing for yourself and others brings to you and your audience.

*** Lesson Details ***
My Method and Goals:

Proper technique is the key to producing extraordinary sound and growing as a violist. I ensure that my students gain solid understanding of these fundamentals first and foremost.
A significant part of the first few lessons will be devoted to developing proper posture and hold of the instrument. A good violinist must be relaxed to prevent muscle tension and produce those rich, spellbinding notes. Soon the instrument begins to feel like an extension of the hands, and students begin to progress much quicker, seeing (and hearing) surprising results.
I can follow the Suzuki method if requested, but much prefer principles of the Russian School. I will be happy to discuss the benefits of each with you.

*** Studio Equipment ***
on ground floor of townhouse w/ seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student has to have his own instrument. I can provide the music sheets

*** Specialties ***
Classical music. Mostly traditional Russian method of violin teaching, also Suzuki.

A Great Violin Teacher

My daughter has been taking lessons with Larisa for three years and has made incredible progress. She began as a viola player and Larisa gave her lessons on that instrument as well. She was very helpful in making the transition to violin. Larisa works on technique as well as musicality so that the student develops into a well rounded musician. Larisa is the type of teacher who communicates clearly so that the student is able to immediately grasp the new concepts. She is a wonderful violinist and is able to demonstrate by playing beautifully as well as explaining. Larisa is extremely knowledgeable about the different periods of music and composers and shares this in her teaching. She has an easygoing personality and my daughter immediately connected with her. I would highly recommend Larisa for your student.

Perfect balance of professionalism and passion

Larisa was not our first teacher but she is no doubt the best one. She is highly professional, she accentuates the right positioning of the hands, but the music and emotional expression is on the first place. She combines the best of the Russian music teaching tradition with very attentive and fun environment for kids. She is very sensitive to child's needs and structure her lesson very individually . Not to mention her excellent communication and reliability. She also has a very positive attitude and my daughter is always looking forward to her violin lessons. Thank you, Larisa!

Turi M.

San Rafael, CA

I am comfortable teaching all ages and levels of the violin. I specialize in younger aged children (4-6) and enjoy watching them succeed in learning how to play the violin. For these students, I utilize the Suzuki method which integrates parent involvement and ear training. For older students, I take a more traditional approach and start with note reading.

Rachel P.

Napa, CA

I believe that each student learns differently so my teaching style is groomed specifically for each student. I put a lot of focus on correct physical set-up when you're playing and emphasize natural movements to set each student up for musical success.

About Rachel

I have a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music degree with an outside field in string pedagogy from Indiana University.
I travel the world as a performer, playing in solo, chamber music and orchestral settings but I also really love to teach.
I teach at the collegiate level at Pacific Union College and Napa College, have an active private studio (both violin and viola) and also teach group violin classes, string orchestra and a pre-orchestra music program with an El Sistema program.
I studied pedagogy with Mimi Zweig and teach primarily through her
method (a combination of Suzuki and Rolland ideas) but have also picked up my own style along the way. I offer lessons for primarily classical style violin and viola.

Why Are There Different Violin Sizes, and Why Does it Matter?
One of the main concerns that violin students and their parents typically have is purchasing the right-sized violin. And once kids are in their teenage years, trying to keep up with growth spurts can be extremely difficult, especially considering how much violins cost. Even adults can run into problems when selecting the right size. Fortunately, after a little research, selectin

Introduction to Violin Music Notes
The violin is often considered by musicians to be one of the most challenging instruments to learn. Its roots trace back many centuries and it was clearly a definitive instrument in shaping classical music all over the world. One of the reasons it is considered a difficult instrument to learn is that it's a fretless string instrument, making violin music notes appear to be inexact, yet fingering must still be done with precision. The reward for learning this sweet-sounding elegant instrument, ho
