James P.

Petaluma, CA

About James

I've played keyboards and sang professionally for the last 25 years. During that time my home has been in the San Francisco Bay Area but I have performed all over the country and have toured several times in Germany, Switzerland, and Japan. I’m a two time winner of the West Coast Songwriters “Song Of The Year Award” and I write music and lyrics as well as record and produce songs for myself and others.

Over those years I've developed a wealth of knowledge and experience that I’m very excited to share with my students. I want you to tell me what your musical dreams are and we will develop
a plan to reach them and I will be honored to guide you there.

*** Lesson Details ***
I see music lessons as a partnership between the instructor and the student. I like to start this partnership by helping each student clarify their goals. Then we can proceed to plan our path to the stated goals. This plan will of necessity be unique to each student.

Obviously, expectations for the lessons would depend on the student’s starting point but I would say that for a child piano student who is just beginning, it would be reasonable to expect that within 3-6 months they would be able to play songs by reading the music. These would include some songs of their own choosing as well as some that I might recommend. For adult piano students, although reading is highly encouraged, our goals might take us in a different direction.

For songwriting students, we might choose to forego working at the piano entirely and instead take our lessons into my recording studio. It all depends on our goals and the path that we choose to get there. We might spend an entire lesson on lyrics. But I really like to see a student leave each lesson with some concrete progress on their song, and preferably with it documented on a recording. Depending on the level of the student, after 3-6 months I anticipate that we would have at least a few songs written and demoed.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Room: 2 vertical pianos

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to provide a piano or appropriate keyboard in a well lit room. I would also expect a bench and music stand.
I could provide a digital recorder and a metronome.

*** Specialties ***
blues, jazz, pop and rock

I came away from my lesson with James feeling so happy and knowing that he will be teaching and encouraging me all the way going forward. I am actually lost for words to express what an incredibly positive experience I had today. I am also looking forward to my grand daughter taking lessons from James now too. I feel I got lucky that James is the teacher that was found for me.

Alexander M.

Occidental, CA

About Alexander

I have always been a lover of music, literature, and philosophy. I was fortunate to receive an excellent education in these subjects at academic institutions like Berklee College of Music and New York University. After college I took immediately to teaching and found I had a knack for it. I have taught music, language skills, and ESL to students of all ages and backgrounds, one-on-one and in groups. I know how to tutor students in test-taking and analytical skills for academic success. I have also had a successful career as a professional guitarist, appearing on television with Bob Weir of the
Grateful Dead and performing with popular bands such as Kai Altair and Cayucas. In addition, I have had several poems published in journals across the nation, one of which was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Teaching is my main passion and I have found that every one of my students has had their own unique intelligence, which with proper instruction can be formed into a tool of success.

Stephen is the perfect teacher for my 14 year old son who is a beginner on trumpet. My son enjoys trumpet as a hobby, and plays in his school band. Stephen's lessons are fun and low pressure. He is remarkably calm and professional, and he doesn't waste any lesson time. My son looks forward to his lessons with Stephen.

Giorgia G.

Rohnert Park, CA

About Giorgia

I started my solo and backup singer career at the age of 12, working for RG Recording Studio (Italy). When I was 15 I founded a children's choir (ages 5 to 15) called Voci di Pace. I trained them as soloists and as an ensemble, as well as conducted them through the professional recording of dozens of CDs. I also trained and conducted students for the recording of highschool musicals.

I began my conservatory bachelor degree training in cello and chamber music in 1997, and graduated 2010. Since then, I have studied singing technique with pop star Silvia Mezzanotte and with opera singers Chia
ra Fiorani and Noa Frenkel.

I love to teach singing, singing in Italian and Italian diction to students of all ages and backgrounds who are ready to explore their own souls and bodies and to learn how to be themselves through sound and music.

Giorgia is an awesome teacher! I was nervous about singing in front of people, but Giorgia creates a comfortable environment and makes every lesson informative and fun. I have a much better understanding of the fundamentals of singing and I feel more confident. Unfortunately I am moving out of the area, otherwise I would definitely continue lessons!

Giorgia was my first teacher in singing when I was just 8 years old. Since then she has always been a model for me: her talent, her competence, her determination really impressed me. She is able to teach very delicate and complexed topics with genuine irony letting your hair down. I strongly recomend her as a teacher, and I will always thank her for letting me able to apreciate at best music.

Giorgia is amazing! She has an incredible ability to make you feel safe to be vulnerable and open. I was very shy with my voice and Giorgia was the very first person to be able to make me sing in front of another person. She takes you through the basics and explains very constructively how things work. I can recommend her to anyone who is wanting to discover their voice!

Michael M.

Rohnert Park, CA

About Michael

Hello! My name is Michael McClean. I have been teaching independently for many years, beginning in high school as a tutor in Math and Sciences while studying on through AP Spanish and Calculus at Folsom High. I spent a year after this in an internship at my church, running the Middle School youth ministry. Into college I began work as a music instructor, studying music education for all woodwind and percussion instruments and teaching in both group and private settings. I also spent a year studying German and musical pedagogy in southern Germany. I have a B.A. In Music and minor in German Lang
uage from Sonoma State University. My girlfriend and I have been together since high school (nearly 10 years now) and are new to the San Mateo area, following an opportunity for her in the thriving Tech industry here. We have two cats and love meeting new people, playing board games and going on adventures. Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions - my goal in teaching to ensure that a concept is not only memorized, but understood to its core for easy replication and application. I look forward to working with you!

Michael was a great piano teacher to our 8 year old son who was brand new to playing any instrument. He was engaging and easy going. His lessons were structured and made sure a strong foundation was being set. Our son was playing and reading music within 5 sessions. We were disappointed to learn that Michale was moving away after 5 lessons but are glad we got off to a great start with him!

My boys loved having Mike as their piano teacher. He is very dedicated and easy to work with, really great at teaching based on each kid's level and personal style. After more than 5 years working with him, they were so bummed when Mike moved out of the area and could not continue.

What Age is Best to Start Learning Guitar?
Is there a best age for learning guitar? We asked guitar teacher Linda L., who has taught young children, teens, adults, and seniors for her take...
