Ilona M.

Pompano Beach, FL

About Ilona

For my tutoring sessions I use skills that include goal-directedness, I teach how to organize learning in small steps and how to set them up; I always strive to motivate and engage my students to make the learning interesting and fun; I also use self-control skills to teach how to avoid distractions and I use different focusing strategies. I use positive mind set skills to teach how to use failures as a learning opportunities.

I have a Master's Degree (2012) in teaching English to speakers of other languages, and Bachelors in Music Education (2010), both from Florida Atlantic University,
as well as degree in violin performance from Poland.
I studied piano in Poland for 10 years & taught both piano & violin for over 20 years. I also teach flute & cello for the past 5 years, as I studied them during my Music Education program.

I teach music for over 24 years using the traditional and Suzuki methods. I am a fan of the Essential Elements 2000 for string instruments, and the Alfred's Piano Library for piano. Alfred's piano library can be used for any age as they also have books especially made for adult learners. I also like their music flash cards.
For teaching music theory I mostly used Master Theory.

I personalize every lesson, and always set goals for my students. Most of my violin students are members of the Florida Youth Orchestra as well as Gold Coast Youth Orchestra and my piano students participate in Pompano Beach competition and the annual Piano Guild auditions.
I teach any age and any level, and always stress that learning a new instrument is very similar to learning a new language, it needs a lot of patience, persistence and repetitions. My lessons are customized to my students needs, and are work in progress as they needs may change over time. I always remind my students that music can give them instant gratification when they learn to play favorite songs.
I always encourage my students to tell me about their music preferences, so I can incorporate them in their music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
All my tutoring sessions include reviews of previously learned material and if possible the use of technology. I use students books but often bring extra study materials if necessary.
All my lessons include: technique: I like to use the Finger Power for piano students and Essential Elements for my string students, and scales for both.
music theory: I use Master Theory or other books such as Hal Leonard's Piano Note spellers & Piano Music Theory books for younger ages, music flash cards to support learning notes and musical terminology, and of course the fun part performance.

Besides Essential Elements 2000 for strings I also use String Tunes and Fiddle Runners to add more fun to the lessons. For piano students I use Holiday Treats book, which comes in 2 different levels: Beginner & Intermediate, so my students have a new songs for a specific holiday.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I always bring violin with me to be able to show what I teach.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The students needs to have their books and assigned material ready for tutoring. Instrumental students needs to have their music books & instrument available as well as a pencil. I always stress with my students to be organized and prepared for their lesson, this way they will be able to focus better during the lesson. I bring my violin with me. I also ask that the room where the lesson takes place to be free of any distractions, such other siblings or any other noise. The quiet environment helps in faster learning.

*** Specialties ***
I tutor most K-12 subjects and prepare students to take ACT, SAT, GRE tests.
Music genres: Classical, traditional, Suzuki, Popular, Celtic, fiddle, Blues

I highly recommend Miss. Ilona!

My 10 year old boy/girl twins have had lessons with Miss. Ilona for several months. Miss. Ilona, who is classically trained, not only keeps a nice balance between theory and performance, but also accommodates my twins' interests in contemporary music by helping them with their Spring Choral Concert music.

Every teacher has a point of view, personal preferences, and methodological bias that may fit one child but may not fit another child as well. Miss. Ilona, however, constantly leaves her doors open to communicate and listen, and make an effort to understand how my twins feel about the lesson material. She constantly adapts the material and tries new approaches to make them better violinists.

What I like most about Miss. Ilona is that she is willing to provide her students with opportunities to participate in Fund Raising and charity events by donating their musical talents. This allows her students to give back to the community what they have learned. On April 17, 2015 my twins performed at Theosophical Society Fund Raising at Deerfield Beach. On May 30, 2015, they performed at Children’s Oasis International Fund Raising to "enable today youth be tomorrow's leaders” in Africa.

After those events, my son wrote in his essay, “What matters to me most is to make people happy by doing what I enjoy doing…… While we played, the audience was very happy and cheered us after each song. It really made us feel so good…… After the performance, many people came to us and thanked us to play music for them. It really made us feel appreciated and so special. When I hear people saying they raised a lot more money thanks to us, I feel so blessed. I am proud that I can make difference by doing what I enjoy doing……special thanks to my violin teacher, Miss. Ilona and my twin sister."

As Hillary Clinton said, "...it takes a village to raise a child (the traditional African proverb)" during her own presidential compaign during 2007, it seems to Miss. Ilona, raising a musical child is a collaborative business, a business that the teacher, the student and the parents have to run together in order to be successful. Collaborative decision making with a child requires a willingness to listen, negotiate and compromise. As Jessica Turner (music educator) argues music instructors know about teaching music, but when it comes to your child and how s/he learns, we parents are the expert. As an educator myself, I appreciate that Miss. Ilona lets me work together with her to ensure the fit and quality of my twins musical instruction. I feel fortunate that we have found such a great instructor for my twins!

I had looked at several people before settling on Andy for vocal lessons and I'm very happy I did. Even after a few lessons, I've noticed large strides in progress. He's very diligent and not complacent at all. He has stacks of books about voices and vocal faults- he's constantly trying to become better so you can be sure he'll do the same for you.

I've been very happy with my lessons so far and am giddy to see continued progress under Andy.

Kristin has been one of the best instructors that I've ever had. I started flute lessons with her with a lot of bad habits picked up from an instructor at the school was I was attending. I didn't know that they were bad until Kristin walked me through why they were bad. She helped me break the habits, and since then I've been doing much better. I haven't tripped up as much as I used to, and I really do attribute it to her. Now I just need to practice more. She's very patient, always with a smile on her face, and made me feel very comfortable, whether it was at her home or mine. She has also been very flexible with my schedule.

I would recommend her wholeheartedly to anyone!

Steve G.

Pompano Beach, FL

About Steve

Music has been a part of my life for over 4 decades. I stepped onstage when I was 15, and have been active in the music business ever since. I was raised in the New York / New England area, and played in many bands in the 70's and 80's, most notably the band AVALON. I moved to Florida in the late 80's and began to develop a one man show, using the emerging technology available. I called the show YIN YANG, the infinite possibility of Music. I chose the name, as it is the Oriental symbol for balance, and used it to represent the balance between the electric and acoustic, and the technology of t
oday with the classic music from yesterday. Midi guitar and guitar synthesis became my trademarks as I pushed the boundaries of how I could express myself on the guitar. Being able to play sax, flute, strings, pianos, even percussion on the guitar took my imagination to new places and enabled me to express myself in ways I didn't know were possible. I grew up influenced by the classic rock guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Alvin Lee, Duane Allman, and used their techniques to springboard me into developing my style. I am also influenced by some of the great guitarists of today, such as Satriani, Vai, Bonamassa, etc. I am fluent in electric and acoustic guitar, slide guitar, open tunings, modal playing, and guitar synthesis. I also can play and teach mandolin, ukulele, banjo, bass, and also harmonica and folk harp. I am working on the bagpipes now. I also give lessons on music technology, audio recording, and music software such as Sonar, Reason, and Finale, to name a few. Music is the passion that feeds my soul, and a decade ago I started teaching, to have a chance to give back to the next generation and share what I have learned along the way. I love bringing out the soul of each new student I meet.

*** Lesson Details ***
When I take on a new student, the first thing I do is to sit down and talk to them and find out a bit about them... their personality, what their influences in music are, what artists they like, and what they are looking to be able to accomplish on the instrument. Each student is an individual, so depending on what they like, I will frame my lessons around the styles and artists that they like, and will incorporate the fundamentals and the exercises around the music that they enjoy. I will use the artists and the songs that excite my students to frame the lessons that we work on. I use music software to create custom grooves for each of my students to practice to, and also sometimes use a video cam to film my student working on a particular lesson that they are having trouble with, so that when they go home, they have an example of themselves playing the lesson, so they can study it at home to get it right. I am a firm believer in learning all the rules. I am also a firm believer, when you know the rules, to break them all. You have to know the rules to be able to break them. I will provide you with everything you need to shine on your instrument. My teaching technique is something that I developed myself, is quite unique, and, if you follow my program, you will progress REALLY fast. But keep in mind, anything good is worth working for, and if you REALLY want this, you will grow in leaps and bounds. Most of my students have been with me on an average of 4 to 5 years, some 9 or 10 years. I look forward to meeting you and helping you make magic with music! Ciao!

*** Specialties ***
I have developed a curriculum that combines my knowledge of music software with my teaching technique. This enables me to create musical templates tailored for each student according to their musical interests, what they would like to focus on, and what their ultimate goals are. For example ...lead guitar, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar accompaniment to their voice, etc. which ends up making for an exciting experience as my student learns their instrument framed around the styles of music that they enjoy.

I've taken lessons from about ten different teachers since I was 15 years old some taught me more music and some taught me to play songs on the guitar. but no one ever put it all together like Steve Gagnon. Every lesson Steve teaches me something new and covers music and technique. and teaches me to play my own style. rather then just copying others weather you are young or older Steve will teach you as an individual with patience.
