Every student is different. I've found that students have vastly different, ages, t
astes, goals, and want to learn for different reasons. They also learn and develop in different ways and at different paces. That said, I use the first lesson to determine goals and a general plan for each student.

I consider myself a "groove" player and in my musical world, my focus is on rhythm section work. To get there you must first learn several skills. Technique, Timing, Ear Training, and Theory are what I consider the 4 main "food groups" in the "diet" of any good musician. My job is to steer each individual student down the path that gets them there at their pace AND to make it fun. After all people don't choose to learn because they have too, they choose to learn because they want to. Why? Because it's cool and it's fun!

I like to dedicate a portion of the lesson to having fun with the instrument. A student may be interested in a certain band or bass player and wants to learn their song. I will ask them to bring me the song (I may already know it) and we'll learn it together. I like to play musical, or instrument related games to help the student learn in an non-stressful, happy and fun way. I think it makes a difference.

Bass lesson With Al

Had a really nice first lesson with Al. He is a good guy and a we had fun jamming out on a couple jazz standards and talking about scales. He has good knowledge of the instrument and i was happy to see that he played a 6string like myself. I enjoyed the lesson.

Ben's bass playing is experienced and versatile, much like the way he teaches. Since he's fluent in multiple genres - from rock to jazz to ska and more - he's able to incorporate a student's specific musical interests into their lesson and tailor the learning especially to them, which always makes his lessons interesting and exciting.

Lessons with Ben have helped me, a guitarist first and foremost, to be able to hang on Bass in a professional capacity. His music philosophy has helped me to approach my own playing with a more focused mind. I highly recommend him as an instructor!

*** Lesson Details ***
In a one hour lesson, we will spend twenty five minutes on vocal exercises designed to teach support and placement. Having performed leads on and Off Broadway, I know that without good technique you can't do eight shows a week, do back to back sets in a nightclub or cabaret or tour as a pop or rock singer. The second half of the lesson is spent on songs. As an acting as well as vocal coach, I focus on dramatics as well as musical interpretation. A singer must be connected to the words as well as the music. I hope to teach you to love singing as much as I do.

*** Studio Equipment ***
casio keyboard, speakers, desk, extensive library of scripts and sheet music, internet

*** Specialties ***
pop and musical theatre singing
college and theatre auditions/monologues and song performance

Mary is wonderfully patient and convivial. I'm pretty much a beginner at lessons, and she's found a way to explain to me technique exercises such that each week, my body understands more, and I feel progress. In responding to my singing, she has not been a perfection czar -- she zeroes in on the most important concern at the moment. While she's extremely knowledgeable about and experienced in musical theater, she can help singers with pop as well. I'm enjoying our lessons. She has boosted my confidence while it's quite evident how much I should improve. Her pricing is also reasonable -- no small thing.

She's also very supportive and knows how to get the best from her students.

I took mandolin lessons from Michael. He also taught me a lot of music theory and also how to improvise. I really enjoyed my lessons, because I was able to tell Michael what I was interested in learning, and that was what we focused on. He is himself a very talented musician and his teaching style is easy to understand. As an adult student, all of these aspects of teaching are very important.
