5 Signs Your Child May Need a Tutor

Does your child struggle with homework? If so, you’re certainly not alone. Although most kids don’t jump for joy when it’s homework time, if you’ve noticed your child feeling particularly overwhelmed, they may need extra help with homework. Read on to discover the five signs that your child may need a tutor, and what you can do to help:

1. Is your child having trouble meeting deadlines?

For example, you know he has a book report due on Friday, but he just can’t seem to get started, even though it’s Thursday night! If your child consistently has trouble getting focused to work or is always turning in assignments late, this is a sure sign that he needs extra help with homework.

2. Does your child have questions about their homework that you don’t know how to answer?

As teaching methods change over the years, you might find that you’re just not equipped to answer your child’s questions when they’re working on their homework. If your child’s teacher insists that she show her work on math problems, using a method that you were never taught, you might feel just as lost as your child when you try to offer her help. In this instance, don’t hesitate to reach out for extra help.

3. Does your child consistently feel stuck in a particular subject?

Everyone has different strengths. A child might excel in reading but feel confused by concepts in science class. Maybe your child always mixes up dates for his history exams or is always struggling with writing assignments. Consistent struggles with a particular subject are a strong indicator that your child could benefit from extra help and may need a tutor.

4. Have you noticed a change in your child’s attitude toward school?

If your child used to be excited to learn more in school but now she says she hates it or doesn’t want to go, she might be struggling with her schoolwork. Some extra help might be all she needs to feel confident and excited about learning again!

5. Has your family had a change in routine or schedule?

Maybe you used to have more time to spend with your child, but now due to longer hours at work or other family changes, you’re spread a little thin. If you can’t be there to help your child during his homework time, you may want to look into finding other ways to offer your child the help he needs in order to succeed.

So, what can you do?

If you’ve said yes to any of the questions above, it might be time to find a private tutor. Working with an academic tutor is a great way to make sure your child gets the attention they need to excel in school. A private tutor will create personalized lesson plans for your child that address their specific learning needs, and often that one-on-one attention can make a world of difference.
