What Are Some Beautiful Italian Sayings?

For summertime in Italy, the air is filled with the sweet sound of Italian words and phrases. These sayings embody the simple joys of summer, from celebrating the warmth of the sun to savoring days spent by the sea:

  • One of the most beautiful Italian sayings for summer is “Dolce far niente”, which translates to “sweet doing nothing” – perfect for adapting an hour or two to relax and soak in all that summer has to offer. 
  • Other popular sayings include “Sole e cielo azzurro” meaning “Sun, blue sky”, encouraging appreciation for days dotted with sunshine.
  • There’s also “Estate dei sogni”, which means “summer of dreams” – ideal for making holidays special and memorable.

Ciao!

First things first, you must know “ciao” (pronounced “chow”). It’s one of the most common greetings in Italian and it can be used both when saying hello and goodbye. When someone says ciao, they are usually wishing the other person a pleasant day or evening. 

Prego!

Prego (pronounced “pray-go”) means “you’re welcome.” You can use this phrase after someone thanks you for doing something. Prego is also sometimes used as an invitation to enter a room or building. For instance, if someone opens the door for you, they might say “prego!”  

Molto bene!

Molto bene (pronounced “mole-toe ben-eh”) translates to “very well” or “excellent!” You can use this phrase when someone asks how you are doing or if you want to express approval after someone does something well. 

Forza!

Forza (pronounced “for-tzah”) means “come on!” or “let’s go!” This phrase is often said in response to somebody complaining about not wanting to do something. It’s a way of encouraging them and getting them motivated!

Take some time beforehand to hunt down an organized list of Italian-to-English translations and look up common words used when traveling such as “airport”, “restaurant”, “hotel”, and so on. 

Try saying these words out loud or writing them down until they become second nature. Additionally, certain phrases like “how are you?”, “good morning”, and other pleasantries could come in handy during spontaneous conversations with locals or new acquaintances. 

Watching movies and tv shows in Italian is also a great way to get familiar with the language by listening for words that you already studied coupled with others you may find interesting or funny. 

With a mix of smart studying and persistent practice, your level of fluency should certainly be ready for any international conversations this summer!
