According to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, it is estimated that as many as 3.5 million Americans are likely to experience homelessness in a given year. This number is only expected to rise.

I would like to create a non-profit organization with a focus on helping the homeless. I want to be able to do more than just get people off the street for a night or two. I want to learn their story and really get to know them. I understand it’s impossible to help everyone, but I want to find people who truly want to better themselves and help them out of their current situation.

My goal would be to run a business employed by homeless men and women that would allow them to build their resume. Additionally, I would provide the tools to help them be presentable, offer counseling and support, and ultimately, help them find a better job so they can support themselves.

I’m working towards a degree in Accounting, which will help prepare me for the business aspect of the organization. However, I would also have to find funding for my cause. I’d like to volunteer for a non-profit with similar goals while learning more about how non-profits do business.

Homelessness is costly at a personal and social level. Being able to support themselves will help them off the street, thus saving on social services such as emergency shelters and soup kitchens. I’d love to help even a few people in need.
