Close your eyes and imagine the smell of new books and crayons. Listen for the sound of the chalk on
the board and pencils scratching. Look around in your mind’s eye and visualize bright posters and the
shiny big red apple on the teacher’s desk. This is the atmosphere that surrounded me for years and
encouraged me to learn. My mother home-schooled my siblings and I for a number of years before
transferring to a private school, while being home-schooled I remember having a desire to read. I loved
the way books felt and I especially loved the smell of fresh new library books. My goal in life was to
read! My motto in life was to “READ EVERYTHING” I could get my hands on. So my mom began the
painstaking process of teaching me to read. It was frustrating and at times felt like I was living inside
of a black and white TV, but once the door was open and I began to understand words, it was like I
could now see the world in color. It was beautiful! I read road signs, labels on food, and books galore.
I admire and love my mom so much for instilling in me the desire for learning. Because of her patience
and teaching skills a whole new sphere of life was at my disposal. I can do anything and everything. This
passion for learning has poured into every area of my life. So much so, that I have taken up elementary
education as my major at Oakwood University in Huntsville, AL. Not only have I chosen this as my major
but I am also helping wherever and whenever I can. I participate in an outreach group called, REACH,
it’s a program where college students go into the community every Saturday and sing, play, and teach
children about the love of Jesus. I also love helping my siblings and cousins with homework assistance.
With this $1,000 scholarship I can do more for my education. This scholarship could help pay for tests
that are required for my major, pay for a trip to Tokyo or Vienna to study their educational systems,
or assist me in traveling to Costa Rica to enroll in the Central American Adventist University to study
Spanish and be immersed in the culture so I can broaden my horizons in the educational field. Help me
make my dream and plans a reality. Please grant me the scholarship reward! Thank you!
