November 12, 2012

babies at pianoWhat were you doing at the age of seven? Even if you were well into your music studies, like many famous musicians began, it’s hard to imagine composing your own opera.

But then there are those gifted few like seven-year-old Alma Deutscher, who has been making headlines and whose natural talent is being compared to that of Mozart.

Alma was recognized after submitting her entry to the English National Opera’s search for the best in young talent in the world of classical music. Although she narrowly missed making it to the final round, British actor and social media buff Stephen Fry took notice, sent out a Tweet to his fans with a link to her video, and the media frenzy began.

Check out the adorable BBC interview here, and her interview with the UK newspaper The Independent here.

As of November 7th, the gifted pianist and cellist’s YouTube channel had over 750,000 views. Her video clips range from improvisations to performances to other original compositions she has created.

Here’s one particularly impressive video of Alma improvising on the organ:

Forget pop stars like Selena Gomez and One Direction – according to The Independent interview, Deutscher wants to ““compose like Mozart, play the violin like Perlman and play the piano like Barenboim.” Go for it, girl! We can’t wait to see what comes next from this gifted young musician.
