Raising a Violin Virtuoso

September 11, 2012

Girl playing violinThis week, the classical music world lost Ruggiero Ricci, 94, one of the most influential child-prodigies-turned-virtuosos. Ricci debuted his talent at the young age of 10, and was even named one of the “world’s most famous children” in 1932. After touring as a teenager, Ricci launched into a long career of solo violin performances and teaching, but was best known for his recordings of Paganini’s 24 Caprices. With over 500 recordings and 5,000 performances on his resume, Ricci certainly secured himself as an inspiration to violinists at any level.

The violin is a common instrument for youngsters to start on, especially with teachers specializing in the Suzuki Method, which we covered last week. If you’re aiming to raise a violin virtuoso of your own, here are a few tips as your child gets started with violin lessons:

1) Get the violin sized appropriately.
Violins come in a variety of sizes, and finding the perfect fit will make a huge difference. The violin is a good size if, when holding the instrument under the chin in playing position, the scroll fits comfortably in the student’s palm, with the elbow slightly bent. Ask an experienced violinist (your teacher, for example) to come along with you as you shop to help find the right fit.

2) Find a teacher who works well with children.
Teaching children, especially kids with shorter attention spans, takes a special amount of patience and expertise. Take the extra time to find an instructor who not only has experience with teaching children, but one who meshes well with your particular child. Sometimes, all it takes is a knowledge of the Top 40 hits to forge that connection and inspire the inner musician.

3) Explore music outside of the lessons.
Exposing your child to music at an early age is an essential part of raising a musician. Outside of the lessons, listen to music (of all types!) together, talk about his or her progress, and attend performances and concerts. As your child is exposed to music appreciation during everyday activities, that motivation will carry over into his or her progress and overall success.
