Holly T. Seattle, WA

I have been teaching piano in the Seattle area for close to ten years. I have worked with young beginners to intermediate and some advanced students. My methods are eclectic and I often draw from the Kodaly Method for beginners. I encourage my students to sing along while they play to reinforce learning, accessing multiple neural pathways.

I teach my students to read music and play with feeling and heart. I instill a love of music in my students by creating musical moments in them and expose them to a wide variety of genres and styles. Students will learn basic technique, theory, improvisation, and performance etiquette, all while having fun!

About Holly

I am an enthusiastic musician with a talent for teaching. I have worked as a voice and piano teacher in Seattle for eight years. I was employed at The West Side Music Academy for over three years and am currently working on a Bachelors in Music Education at Seattle Pacific University. I am a huge believer in being a lifelong student! I have continued my music education throughout my adult life and have studied Jazz, Opera, Pop, Rock, Reggae, Blues, Soul, and Folk. As a pianist I began individual instruction at age 14, and have studied Jazz with Darius Willrich, Ryan Burns, Dan Kramlich and Mark Samson. I began singing and playing piano at age 5. I have been involved in school and church choirs including The Total Experience Gospel Choir, Seattle Pacific University Women's Choir, and ...

As a student, I take vocal and piano lessons from Holly. I look forward to our lessons each week and I love the kind of flexibility she gives me. I often find myself motivated by her lessons to practice on my own.
She has introduced a lot of new music to me this year--some music which I didn't think I liked!

Best instructor ever, indeed!
My daughter takes lesson from Holly. My daughter who cried when I would sing to her as an infant, who begged me to stop singing when she was in elementary. My daughter who would not participate in annual caroling, who early on in her academic instructions learned to mouth "watermelon" to give the impression she sings along. Now in high school, she takes lessons from Holly. My daughter enthusiastically belts out the words to songs! Holly is helping her to find her voice- musically, and in life. My daughter will now let me sing!

THANKS HOLLY!

Great Teacher!

Holly goes out of her way to find music that is just right for my son on the piano. When he showed interest in a particular piece of music, she found a version that was perfect for him to learn. Holly is cheerful, flexible, and communicative. Her skill with music is wonderful! We highly recommend Holly!

Kareem has been teaching me since I was in the fourth grade. I am currently in 8th grade, and man what can I say, he's as good as it gets! After two years I was in my middle school jazz band, which is not easy for a person who has only been playing for two years. You, yourself will be able to see extreme progress within just a few lessons! You must know Kareem teaches at Pierce College, a class at the Tacoma School of the Arts (which I hopefully will be attending and taking his class), teaches numerous private students every week, and lastly he performs with a stellar jazz band of his own! He is extremely dedicated to the musical field. If I were anybody reading this review and wanted to start playing any of the variety of instruments he plays, I would call Kareem K.!

Kareem is a dedicated and diligent musician and teacher. He is able to share his love of music with students of all ages. Not only is he extremely capable of teaching students the technical aspects of music, but his lessons incorporate a wider perspective as well, such as, listening to different genres of music and asking his students to discuss what they hear. He is always positive and encourages students to do their best. He has style and class and it is a privilege that two of my children can study under his tutelage.

Kareem is the man. I first met him while playing in the Pierce College Big Band--which he directs and is a perennial first place at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. I studied with him for 6 months formally but over the past 2 years through his weekly jam session and mutual gigs he's become a tremendous influence in my life. Whether your a beginner on your axe or an aspiring jazz student of any level he is the instructor for you.
As an improvisor his main influences are Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon, and Joshua Redman. For any jazz musician on any instrument he is a master instructor of bebop. His overall playing versatility is solid but his forte is bebop. He is simply a beast of bebop and can aptly guide you along the path of musical enlightenment. Also, like most great jazz musicians his piano chops are excellent.

What a terrible experience. I signed up for lessons for my wife from Brett as a gift because he listed times that would work for my wife given that we have a young daughter, and have a hard time making time for lessons. Brett told us 3 days before the lesson that the time wouldn't work, then simply never showed for the rescheduled first lesson. Worse, he simply refused to do scheduling via email (he would leave voicemails and failed to return my wife's call when she called back as they were playing phone tag), and then told us he had another commitment during the slot we had supposedly reserved for him. Worse, he failed to update the site as he continually cancelled lessons and never showed up for scheduled times. I now have a huge hassle of getting a refund on the money I paid for lessons as opposed to a lovely gift for my wife. Life's too short and we're too busy for such an awful experience.

Fantastic for our 10-year old son...

Brett is fantastic with our 10-year old son who just enjoys playing piano and isn't looking to become a concert pianist someday. So many kids are miserable playing the same boring things over and over and Brett really listened to our needs and just nurtures our son's interest in music. Bravo!
Rian D. Seattle, WA

I offer Simply Music piano lessons in my studio. Simply Music focuses on the sheer pleasure of playing. The hands-on approach, and immediate results, dispels the notion that learning to play means enduring years of lessons, boring practice sessions and relentless hours of drills.

How is Simply Music different?

-The quantity of music learned

-The quality of music you immediately learn to play

-The speed of your progress

-The ease with which you experience the process

The Simply Music Method is based on the premise that everyone, without exception, is naturally musical. Traditional methods insist that beginners learn to read music as the means of learning to play. This removes the natural connection between student and instrument and commonly, removes all the fun, too. In fact, expecting children to read before they have learned to play is like expecting children to read and write before they have learned to talk.

In stark contrast, Simply Music temporarily delays ...

About Rian

A native of West Seattle, Rian took his first piano lessons at the age of seven. His middle school music teacher recognized Rian’s musical talent and gave him his first public performance opportunity during the school’s annual musical. Rian would go on to play piano for the middle school productions for 3 more years. As Rian progressed into high school his talent increased as well. As a freshman in high school Rian successfully tried-out for the award winning JFK High School Jazz Band and soon took over as the primary pianist. While performing at a high school jazz band festival he was singularly awarded the “Best Rhythm Section” award, a prize usually given to a band’s entire rhythm section. Rian concluded his high school musical career with a trip to the Washington Music Educators ...

rian is a good teacher

he is the only piano teacher i have had. i was teaching myself piano and was given some lessons as a gift, and i chose him somewhat randomly from the teachers listed on takelessons dot com. i had several lessons from him and he gave me lots of good ideas. i would have continued with him, but for circumstances out of my control. i would recommend him as a teacher. he has lots of experience and can tailor his teaching depending on what you want to do

Rian is patient which is what I needed. He makes you feel comfortable and has a low key way of pointing out areas for improvement without offending.Would recommend him to others who want to play piano, regardless of how old you are.
