David H.

Malden, MA

About David

I am a 28 year old Massachusetts native and have been playing music since I was 8 years old, starting on the piano with a wonderful teacher in Beverly who also went to Berklee. I picked up the guitar and the bass in high school and got into rock, jazz and blues and haven't looked back. I received a bachelors degree from Berklee in 2012 with a major in Professional Music and minor in Music Education. I currently perform in and around Boston with several bands and also do custom guitar finishes, set-ups and modifications. Music study is great exercise for your brain. It works both the left and right hemispheres of the brain simultaneously because you are thinking both creatively and logically/mathematically at the same time. I am happy teaching students at any level, even ...

Had a fabulous experience with Dave. He taught my 13 year old son and was very patient and flexible. We had to change dates sometimes and he was very flexible...in addition Dave was patient and changed his approach a couple of times to help my son become more interested in bass going forward! Thanks Dave!

Dave is the man!!! He is an excellent teacher and curtails the lessons to what you want to learn and not just out of some book. He is also great at explaining the functions of the scales or chords you are learning as well as picking great songs in order to showcase those elements. If you are looking for a great guitar instructor, look no further, Dave is your guy! And his cat is pretty cool too...

Luckily I live very close to David's so it took me under 10 minutes to get to my lessons and he has parking. During each lesson I learned something different and left with cool new music (he has quality taste) or strumming techniques to practice at home. I liked his cat who had a hankering for affection and when David plays (He's terrific and a delight to listen to )

Vasiliy M.

Somerville, MA

About Vasiliy

Hello, I am Vasiliy M, Boston University School of Music Alumnus (DMA in Composition). We dwell in Boston since Fall 2002; before that time , we lived in New York, where I studied Composition at Mannes College, The New School For Music. I received both BM, and MM degrees from Mannes in 1999, and 2001, respectively. Before an arrival to US, in 1994, I studied Jazz Performance, Electric Bass Major, and Classical Composition, at Moldova State Conservatory, from 1988 to 1993, respectively. I was raised in the family, where music is an essential part of its daily life; my father, Grigoriy, before his retirement, was a military band trombone player, and, quite naturally, I was exposed to music, and encouraged by my parents to learn playing an instrument of my choice, from my ...

I hope to work with Vasilly for a long time and I look forward to each lesson with enthusiasm. I am very fortunate to have found him.

Daniel R.

Somerville, MA

About Daniel

I love to sing, and I love to teach. Private lessons are a great place for both. Whether you're already passionate about music, or just dipping your feet in the water, I can personalize lessons to meet your needs. For me, seeing a student grow as a musician is a reward in itself. But the biggest rewards should be yours: a stronger voice, a deeper understanding of music, a whole body involved in making music, an enjoyable effort, and a growing independence to handle musical and technical difficulties over time. My background: I am an experienced tenor vocalist, with over 11 years of private vocal study, a BA in music from Williams College, and further study in vocal pedagogy (how to teach voice) with a Longy professor. I sing currently with the Cantata Singers, Labyrinth Choir, ...

Voice Lessons

Daniel R is absolutely a terrific instructor. He provides clear, concise instructions. His use of voice exercises are extremely helpful and if not correctly done, he changes them for comfort. He does reuse the exercises the next visit so you, the student, are eventually able to grasp them comfortably. His skillful playing is terrific also, when improvising music. He is highly knowledgeable and very helpful.

Anastasia S.

Medford, MA

About Anastasia

After Anastasia’s Carnegie Hall Debut in 2006, the New York Concert Review wrote: "For a critic, hearing a new pianist with a truly warm, luscious tone is like breathing in the scent of jasmine blooming - a pleasure to be recalled again and again - and so I'm happy to report that from the first note she touched at her Weill Hall recital, Anastasia S. was a genuine pleasure to listen to. Every piece, every measure, every note - no matter how complex the texture, no matter how many strands of melody and accompaniment - was wrapped in a halo of golden tone..." Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Anastasia S. gave her first solo recital at the age of eleven. Ms. S. is a graduate of the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg, Germany, and holds a Master’s degree from The Hartt School at the University of ...

Anastasia is helping me prepare for a role in a German Operetta with spoken dialogue. She is assisting with the translation of the German libretto, pronunciation, and playing the score. She has been great to work with!

Although I'm not technically a student of Phil's, I learn a lot from him every time I play and teach with him. We perform regularly at Berklee, where I'm a professor, and we give concerts and masterclasses all over the Northeast together (most recent was at Cornell). Phil's a warmhearted, patient, brilliant teacher and an outstanding and creative musician, seamlessly putting together everything he knows--jazz, shredding, classical--there's no boundaries for him! He's great at explaining things, and he never belittles a question, no matter how dumb you might have thought it was. Phil's a great friend and a great teacher. -John Funkhouser, Berklee College of Music, Boston

In addition to being the most talented guitarist and musician I have ever had the opportunity to play with, Phil is an astoundingly good teacher. I've played guitar for 8 years and taken private lessons the entire time. Phil has been my teacher for the past 2 years and in that time I have progressed as a musician more than I could have ever imagined. Phil has been the biggest factor in my decision to major in music, due to his unrivaled musical talent, his kind, unassuming, (and funny) demeanor and his seemingly limitless knowledge of the fretboard. He is well versed in so many genres of music, and has such an effortless grasp on improvisation. Any guitarist, from immediate beginners to seasoned professionals, can learn so much from Phil. Need I say more?

Phil is the man! I had been playing for several years before I took lessons with him. He has introduced me to volumes of new music, helped me grow as an improviser, and even taught me how to read for the guitar (which was never my goal in taking lessons, but I'm very happy I can read now). He's helped to expand my playing by constantly introducing new and creative ideas in a supportive atmosphere.

Phil demonstrates a mastery of his instrument while always making his lessons accessible to the student. Definitely check this guy out if you want to reach the next level!

Guitar Master's Guide: How to Hold a Guitar Pick
For a beginning guitarist, the proper pick-hold is one of the most important things to master right off the bat.
