Mr. Johnson is a FABULOUS violin instructor. I haven't played in 20 years, and after a few lessons my technique is coming back. His teaching style is one where he pushes you beyond your expectations. He's an excellent teacher for beginners and experienced violinists. I also love that he is so talented in many genres of music...such a gifted violinist. Hope to play like him again soon. I highly recommend this teacher.

Jessica P.

Chevy Chase, MD

About Jessica

Jessica moved to the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in 2009, having grown up and gone to school in New York and Ohio. She loves the area, and she and her husband are thrilled to be putting down roots in the community. As a performer, Jessica has traveled around the world, but throughout her career teaching has been one of her most important focuses. "As a relative newcomer to the DC area, growing my private studio has been a great way to get involved in the community. My teaching style is individualized, but I always try to include two important things: building a strong basic skill set, and develo
ping creativity."

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether your goal is to make it into All-State, give a solo recital, play tunes at family gatherings, or just try something new for the very first time, I will help you succeed and have a good time along the way.

In my view, the most interesting thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.

Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music. After all, there is no experience so motivating as hearing a new piece that you HAVE to learn to play yourself!

*** Studio Equipment ***
lessons in either living room or upstairs office; Steinway baby grand piano in living room;

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect piano students to have daily access to either a piano or a keyboard with 88 full-sized, weighted keys. Bass or cello students must have their own bass or cello.

*** Specialties ***
classical, baroque, renaissance

I really enjoy taking piano lessons with Jessica. It had been 40 years since I took lessons (as a teenager). Jessica's manner as well as her knowledge and love of music is just what I was hoping to find in a teacher. Her ability to explain musical concepts and her thoughtful approach to teaching has far surpassed my expectations. She gives great constructive feedback and ensures that you understand what she is saying. She is very positive and patient. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with her and recommend her strongly.

Dennis B.

Bethesda, MD

About Dennis

I have been teaching guitar for 25 years in the Washington DC metro area. I work with students 12 years of age and up, but I am especially experienced at teaching adult students regardless of whether they are beginners or have previous guitar experience. I have performed in acoustic Celtic, new age, funk, progressive rock, fusion and contemporary jazz groups and am currently performing regularly as a solo acoustic guitarist. I have composed over 40 works for solo guitar as well as numerous pieces for small jazz bands. I have played on numerous CDs including my most recent solo CD 'DARK MATTER'
.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor the lesson materials to suit the interest of the student but I am dedicated to teaching students at any level to learn to better understand the fundamentals of the language of music. My teaching focuses on critical fundamentals of guitar technique including chords, scales and rhythm guitar playing as well as the art of improvisation. A significant amount of time in the lessons is spent actually playing with the students so that the technical concepts are put to use in real music situations. To further the student's understanding of music I frequently teach elements of music theory to those who are interested.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have guitars and amps available for student use although I prefer that the student bring their own instrument. I also have all the needed accessories, cables, stands etc.

*** Specialties ***
Adult students (and older teenagers ) whether beginners or experienced are a particular specialty of mine. Adult learners want to be treated as adults and often times benefit greatly from a more mentor oriented approach to teaching. I like to describe myself as both a teacher and a coach so as to emphasize that the student and I are on the same team sharing the goal of improving their guitar playing and musicianship. We are both on the same path of musical discovery. I am probably just farther along on that path with insights and knowledge that will hopefully help them along their way.

I found his teaching style very clear and rewarding; his approach seems to be especially effective for adults. He has sustained my attention for a long time, and has been very responsive to my learning needs (including special projects and questions) while keeping a very clear roadmap for learning music and the instrument.
He obviously has great musical talent, and his explanations and demonstrations are very clear. He has been super flexible and adaptable schedule-wise.
Overall, a pleasant, enriching and rewarding experience. Highly recommended!

Brian R.

Bethesda, MD

About Brian

I picked up my first pair of drumsticks when I was 10 years old. After a little bit of practice and hard work I've gone on to teach kids and adults the best instrument in the world! Some of my heroes include Steve Gadd, Carter Beauford, Buddy Rich, Gregg Bissonette, Dennis Chambers, and any drummer who can play left-handed. I have been in bands ranging in styles from rock to funk and currently enjoy playing in instrumental funk and pop-rock bands based here in DC. Whether it's an intimate club like IOTA in Arlington or a large venue like The Fillmore in Silver Spring, I love putting on a good
show. While studying Audio/Radio at Emerson College in Boston, I played drums with funk-groove band SYM while honing my skills in audio engineering. It was in the studio, I fell in love with recording music from top talent in New England. Here in the D.C. area (originally from Northern VA), I am excited to meet new students and spread my passion for drums, audio engineering, and music performance!

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor my lessons based on two factors:

1. The skill level of the student.

2. The main goal the student aims to achieve.

Each student is unique and deserves a lesson that both accommodates and challenges their skill-set. Let's start talking today and see what kind of lesson works for you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Yamaha Stage Custom Drums, Premier Artist Maple Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth Drumsticks

*** Travel Equipment ***
I use an electronic drum pad while the student must provide their own drums or percussion.

*** Specialties ***
Funk, rock, and creative linear drumming styles. I also teach percussion which includes both latin and most western music genres.

Professional Drum Teacher/Collaborator

I'm not a student, however I did play in a band in Boston with Brian for over 2 years. He was professional drummer and had a great attitude towards collaboration.

We recorded one EP at Emerson College, where Brian had an integral part in the mixing, production and of course recording.

I would recommend working with Brian!

B-rock

Brian and I shared the drum section together for several years in a local Northeast touring band. His technique and pursuit of the perfect beat were second to none. He's got a keen ear to tempo and brings unique flavors or different genres of music to the table which helped push the band in new directions.

I'd recommend Brian as a teacher based on his love and dedication to music coming from his college major to his hobbies, music and playing drums are a large part of B-rocks life.

Rock on brah.

Excellent Drummer

I have had the unique opportunity of playing in band with Brian for two years. Not only is he an incredibly technical drummer, he genuinely understands creativity and collaboration. He was also at forefront of recording one of our EP's back in '08, and it came out great! He made us sound much more professional than we were at the time. I haven't had him as a teacher, but would highly recommend him for anyone looking to learn both skill and creativity.

Jeff N.

Silver Spring, MD

About Jeff

Hi, I’m Jeff and I have been playing the drums for over 40 years and an instructor for the past 10 years. I began my teaching career at The School of Rock where I spent one (1) year helping the drum students learn to play along to songs from various rock groups such as The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Rush, Kiss and Led Zeppelin. We also covered funk artist Sly & The Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Parliament Funkadelic and James Brown, to name a few. From there, I started teaching at Dale Music, Co., where I served as the Director of Drum Set Studies for the past nine (9) years with a
concentration on performing jazz. My personal drumming style has been influenced by Steve Gadd, William Kennedy, Jimmy Cobb, Art Blakey, Steve Smith and Ndugu Chancler to name a few. Utilizing my combined experiences has lead me in creating a course curriculum to help my students develop a full command of the essential skills every master drummer needs, what I call... “The 3 T’s” – Timing, Touch & Taste.

My following course outline was designed to work for students as young as 7 years old up to adults and will cover from the beginner to intermediate and also advanced students. It will provide a solid foundation in drumming, allowing the student to confidently play whatever musical style they choose.

• The Basics (grip, posture)
• Rhythmic Notation and Timing (reading music, working with a metronome)
• Stick Control (rudiments, etc.)
• Coordination (synchronizing hands & feet)
• Musical Styles & Rhythms
• Endurance
• Advanced Rhythms & Odd Meters
• Improving Your Sound (touch)
• Drum Tuning
• Handle Your Business (musically prepared, proper dress, arrive early)

You will be expected to be on time for your lessons and with the proper materials. While my teaching method is relaxed and without pressure, you the student must be willing to do consistent daily practice to achieve results. “Practice Is the Key to Progress”! The question is, how good do you want to be? Take ownership of the results you want to achieve but keep in mind; “you can’t get a full result with half an effort” and “the best shortcut is hard work”. My desire as an instructor is to help you achieve your musical goals and become the best drummer you can be.

EDUCATION:

My musical training as a beginning drummer started with The DC Youth Orchestra Program and lasted for three (3) years.

Later in life, I continued my educational experiences by attending yearly conferences (2 yrs.) of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), and (3 yrs.) of the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) as well as (5 yrs.) of the KoSA Percussion Workshop where I attended master classes and private lessons with some of the industry’s top professionals; Elvin Jones, Ndugu Chancler, Jim Chapin, Joe Morello, Ed Shaughnesy, Steve Smith, Ed Thigpen and Ralph Peterson, Jr., to name a few.

By following their lead, I’m determined to practice, explore and seek different training materials as well as teaching methods to continually sharpen my skills as a drummer and educator.

If you are looking for a percussion instructor I can recommend Jeff Neal with complete confidence. I am the mother of a student who has studied with Jeff for over 6 years, from about age 11 to age 18. Jeff is a talented professional percussionist who starts the student with the fundamentals and takes them as far as they want to go. He is patient and helps the student progress at their own speed. Jeff is a left-handed drummer which was perfect for my son who is left-handed. He is kind, reliable, and dedicated. He has a genuine concern for his students. His lessons are well prepared and enjoyable. As a parent it has been a pleasure to watch my child grow through the instructions of Jeff. Therefore, I can highly recommend Jeff as a drum teacher.
