Cheryl C.

Mount Tabor, NJ

About Cheryl

I have been a musician for over 25 years. I have a Bachelor of Music and have taught guitar for over 10 years. In addition to guitar, I'm a vocalist, composer and arranger as well as a music publisher. I actively perform as both a classical guitarist and singer-songwriter.

I love teaching guitar and find it so exciting to see kids (and grown-ups!) learn an instrument and be part of the magic of creating music!

I specialize in ages 7 through 18 including college prep. Learning an instrument teaches focus, develops self-direction, self-esteem, how to reach a goal, plus the added benefit of
developing the brain for academic achievement. And, it's just plain FUN!!

***NOTES ABOUT SPECIAL NEEDS***

There are stairs to my home studio. Please take this into consideration if you have an ambulatory disability.

Usually, learning disabilities, ADD & ADHD go together just fine with guitar lessons and frequently give these precious young people a creative outlet. Speak to me about your child's needs so I can prepare the best lessons possible!

*** LESSON DETAILS ***

I like to empower you, the student, by making your lessons challenging enough to keep your interest, but keeping it fun and stress-free!

With regular daily practice, you will learn to read music, play melody and chords. You can learn to play finger style, use a pick or learn both! Music theory and rhythm study is included to round out your musicianship. As you become more accomplished, we can add other music skills, like ear-training, accompaniment and song-writing.

This is perfect for home schooled children or as a supplement to public or private school music programs. Children age 7 and up, properly seated with the right size guitar and under the guidance of an experienced teacher (me!) do very well. (Speak to me before purchasing your child's instrument.)

I can prepare a high school student for college auditions (college prep) and guide adults who are serious about taking their music skills beyond tablature.

*** STUDIO EQUIPMENT ***

Home Studio, dedicated space, guitars and recording equipment, keyboard and amps, music stands, chairs, comfortable waiting area for parents.

*** SPECIALTIES ***

I specialize in acoustic and acoustic/electric guitar - both classical and contemporary, steel string and nylon.

Like anything new - exciting, followed by frustration because it's new and takes some learning and patience.

Cheryl is patient - I know I will get the hang of it as I continue with her.

Robert H.

Cedar Knolls, NJ

About Robert

I started playing guitar at age 11, taking lessons at the local music studio in Hackensack, NJ. I became heavily influenced by The Beatles after hearing their music and as a teenager played in local rock groups, having some success being in the bands Jona's Ark and The Yorkshire Pudding, opening for artists Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, John Mayall and backing up Gary U.S. Bonds. I started playing piano at 19 when I took a group piano class in college. I attended Berklee College of Music and studied guitar with Bill Leavitt and Pat Metheny. That's where I started learning about all the great j
azz artists from Duke Ellington to Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Wes Montgomery to name a few. While at Berklee I also developed a love of the classical guitar and it's repertoire. After Berklee, I became a freelance musician and played guitar for The Drifters, Del Shannon, The Shirelles, The Marvelettes, The Crystals, Chuck Berry, Leslie Gore and believe it or not Tiny Tim. I played guitar, harmonica, mandolin and banjo in productions of: Hair, Tommy, Big River, Fiddler On The Roof and Grease. I composed my own music and performed and co-wrote with others who also wrote their own music. I have always taught private guitar lessons as far back as I can remember. One notable student was Stevie Wonder's son Keita who I taught for 2 years at Stevie's home in northern New Jersey as well as CBS News Anchor Charles Osgood's daughter Annie. Currently I teach 20 private guitar students a week.. From 1994 to 2000, I was the guitarist for The Royal Scam (a Steely Dan Tribute) and during that period I was hired by Hal Leonard Music Corp. to write a guitar transcription book called "The Best of Steely Dan". I was also hired by Brother International Corp. to compose and record a national radio jingle called "P-Touch", with Corey Glover from the rock band Living Colour doing the vocal tracks.
In 1996 I went to William Paterson University to obtain my teacher certification in music education. After the 9/11 attacks, I co-wrote and arranged "America Home Of The Free". The song was used to raise thousands of dollars for the victims of The World Trade Center attacks. Presently I divide my time between teaching, which I enjoy as much as performing and playing guitar with a jazz quartet called ....and All That Jazz, whose 2005 CD "Reflections" was recorded, mixed and mastered in my home based 24 track recording studio in northern NJ. I am also involved in a mandolin / classical guitar project called Music Of The Ages and perform with a 10 piece band called Epic Soul.
As a teacher I am very patient with students and enjoy helping them reach their own musical goals. I emphasize knowing the basics and encourage students to study music theory and basic reading of standard notation. I always ask my students to bring in songs they want to learn as a way to motivate them to practice more.

*** Lesson Details ***
GUITAR: I expect my students to practice at least 5 days a week for at least a 1/2 hour per day. I use the Suzuki method for young students ages 8 to10. We continue learning basic folk songs by ear and then start reading standard notation and basic theory within 6 to 8 months along with classical guitar duets. For older students I use the Hal Leonard guitar method. After 3 months of lessons students can expect to know the basic open position chords and strum patterns to some basic songs as well as some famous guitar riffs and also be able to read some basic melodies in standard notation. After 6 months students will be able to play a 12 bar blues and improvise with the pentatonic and blues scales as well as learn moveable scales and chords and apply these to songs.

PIANO: I also start young piano students with the Suzuki method so they can play some five finger familiar melodies in a short time period. Then we progress to reading notation and eventually adding chord accompaniment to melodies. I use the Faber piano method for reading standard notation.

*** Studio Equipment ***
24 track recording studio, room for parents to sit 14' x 21'...completely furnished studio with guitars, amps, piano, drum machine, synthesizer, microphones...the works.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need a good quality and proper size guitar (for very young students) a music stand (for their home use) a foot stool, a metronome and books I assign along with an 8 1/2" X 11" blank manuscript book and a folder with side pockets to hold handout sheets. Piano students need their own instrument and the above materials minus the foot stool.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki classical guitar, classic rock, blues, jazz , popular, funk, country, folk, finger picking and pick style and piano.

Mr. Rob has been teaching my 6 yrs. old son piano for a few months at our home. He is reliable, patient, and an effective teacher. In a relatively short time, we were impressed at the progress our son had made. Our little one keeps a manuscript book with his practice assignments and has been able to play recognizable notes from children's songs with both hands. The 30 min. sessions are perfect for this age and go by both quickly and enjoyably. We are looking forward to more sessions and continued growth.

Reliable, patient, clear and "fun"

Robert has been reliable and patient with our 12 year old. I asked her opinion for this review and she said, "He shows me exactly what to do and makes it fun. I wish he taught my language arts class."

About Dominic

Dominic M., America’s Tenor, has been singing in one form or another since the age of four. As a young man, Dominic began honing his skills of singing and acting through Community Theater. His voice and career were forever changed when vocal coach and mentor, Suzanne Ferris-Hammer introduced him to the great voice of Mario Lanza. From the moment Dominic heard the voice of Mario Lanza, he began to fashion his own voice in that image.

Dominic continued to expand his career by developing his own show, which includes the songs of Mario Lanza in their original keys. These shows were held in som
e of the finest NYC Cabarets such as Don’t Tell Mama, Duplex Café, Danny’s Skylight Café, Café 44, and Eighty Eights. He has also performed these shows at The New Palace of the Performing Arts of New Jersey and at Odettes in New Hope, PA.

Dominic has performed in professional dinner theater with Palame Enterprises. Some of the great shows he performed in were “Singing In The Rain”, “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, and an original production called “Ellis Island”, in which he had a starring role.

In 1999 Dominic competed in The World Championships of Performing Arts. This event featured over 1500 competitors from 30 countries competing in the disciplines of acting, comedy, dance, singing and modeling. After five days of competition, Dominic was named the first Grand Champion Performer of the World. Following the championship, Dominic was asked to perform at the Athletes and Entertainers for Kids Shaqtacular 4, with such celebrities as Shaquille O’Neal, Paula Abdul, Bruce Jenner, and Jeffery Osborne. Dominic Has also performed with Pat Cooper, Tom Jones, The Duprees, Rod Stewart, Smokey Robinson and Many More.

Another dream came true when Damon Lanza, son of Mario Lanza, and long time friend of the Lanza’s, Bob Dolfi, bestowed Dominic with the honor of singing at the Mario Lanza Society’s 38th Anniversary Pre-Ball Dinner in Philadelphia. Since that event, Dominic has had the honor of performing annually in the church where Mario Lanza first sang at the age of 16. At the 40th annual ball, he co-hosted the pre-ball dinner with Katherine Grayson, co-star of Mario Lanza. Dominic has continued to expand his repertoire performing at the Claridge Casino in Atlantic City and as a guest artist at the Atlantic City Film Festival.Dominic is also in his fourth Year as a headliner at the nations largest Italian festival in Milwaukee WI. other festivals have been in Tampa and Chicago plus many more.

Lessons will consist of focusing on the ligament in the voice on letting it stand alone so the voice will last well past normal years. The sessions are fun because if its not than its not worth doing. What you can expect to achieve is on two different levels. I find Mike to be a professional. His understanding of the mechanics of vocalizing is an asset and his easygoing manner of getting it across an asset.

I have been singing w/ bands now for about 15 years and Mike has helped me understand how to maximize my range and power. I would highly recommend Mike for anyone looking to learn to sing for the first time and/or anyone looking to improve on their existing talents.

Monica G.

Madison, NJ

About Monica

I'm a performing artist and music teacher. I received my Bachelors and Masters degree in music at Boston's New England Conservatory, where I was a member of the jazz, classical, and third-stream departments. I also spent 8 years in Berlin, Germany, sing opera and musical theater. I've always enjoyed working with kids; especially introducing them to music through piano, language, movement, role-playing, and singing. But I also thrive teaching adults; whether it be professional singers looking for some tips, or passionate hobby singers looking to impress their friends at the next karaoke party.
Flute is my first instrument, so definitely get in touch with me if you want to take your playing to the next level!

Monica works wonderfully with my sons aged 3 and 6. She is patient and good natured while pushing them to continue challenging themselves. I usually hear laughter accompanying the lesson and both boys are always excited to show me how much they have progressed. After she leaves after the lessons, my little one always hollers out the door " I love you Monica!" I recommend her without reservation.
