Thomas K.

San Francisco, CA

A very rhythmically powerful and invocative genre of music. I take students through all of the right hand techniques focusing on rhythm and sound production as well as feel.

About Thomas

I've been teaching for over 10 years and I have never had more fun with it. I studied classical guitar for ten years earning a bachelor's and a master's degree in music. During my formal education I not only learned music theory, music history, ensemble playing, and composing, but more importantly I learned how to REALLY learn new things. This ability I try to pass on to my students.I love sharing the things I've learned from all of my various experiences whether it be from my classical guitar background or from one of my various pop/rock bands. I am a working musician and I still learn new th
ings every time I go out to play. It could be classical music at weddings, Jazz at clubs, or Rock and Roll at rowdy venues. There's a lesson to be learned from each.

*** Lesson Details ***
Playing and understanding music is easy. The notion that it is only for the gifted and super talented is a lie.Fun is the first priority. Everybody wants to learn different things.  I tailor the lesson to the student and their goals. With guitar or theory/songwriting, each person has an 'ideal' they are striving for (rock guitarist ala Jimmy Page, Acoustic folk ala Bob Dylan, songwriter like Paul Simon, or classical guitarist like Andres Segovia).  I work with students to reach their ideal in a laid back, friendly manner.

I might teach out of a book or make our own book as we go along depending on the student, their experience level, and their goals. Each lesson will stress the important music fundamentals and making things easier. Every lesson and every student is different.  I have students as young as 5 whom I help learn music while they are learning how to read and write.  AND on the other side, I have students like my 81 year old mandolin student who has exciting ideas on how we should perform in our next recitals.Learning music is an investment.  Everyone learns at a different pace. There is no norm.  There is no "place they should be" at after a given time of lessons/practice.  I've had students that stagnated for YEARS and then TAKE OFF musically once they really decided to apply themselves.  If you are the parent of a student the best thing you can do is to be involved. After that, nature will take it's course.

Thomas is an incredible instructor. I've only had 3 lessons so far and I already feel like I've improved my abilities so much. He not only has mastery of the instrument and of music, but best of all for students, he understands how to teach it well.

Absolutely perfect!

Tom is truly a great teacher. He has tailored his approach to my unique needs-as an accomplished musician learning his 6th instrument, his teaching approach reminds me of things I ought to remember while playing any instrument, and music in general. And my lessons are tons of fun! He has a great knowledge of all the different approaches to the guitar and other stringed instruments which really fits in to what I am most interested in- how to get a particular sound for any given piece of music for the guitar. I'm extremely happy about having found tom to be my teacher.

Great teacher for my 7yr old!

Thomas is great with my 7-year old son. He has been extremely patient with him. He balances out the session with teaching and getting to know him at the same time. He does not rush through the lesson and makes him feel at ease with the guitar. He was only practicing with Thomas for a year and built enough courage and experience playing the guitar that he performed at his school's end-of-the-year talent show and did an amazing job thanks to Thomas! I was impressed!

Ken W.

Concord, CA

Basic fundamentals of flamenco guitar

About Ken

At age 12 Ken picked up a guitar and fell in love with the instrument. He began with an obsession with Metallica and related bands that later evolved to a passion for classical and jazz music, music theory.

From 2008 -2010 completed the music program at Diablo Valley College in June of 2010, which includes extensive coursework in Music theory, Piano and Guitar. Since 2011 Ken has been a Jazz Guitar Performance Major at Cal State East Bay. There he has studied Classical and jazz Guitar performance with world class musicians.

"Music has many different levels and the beautiful thing is the
re is a place for everybody. I have spent a lot of time throughout my music career going “back to basics” in order to become a better musician. We are all capable of becoming great musicians and just because someone can play faster than you doesn't necessarily make them better. Music provides everything from healing power to just plain fun for the human spirit so I always encourage students to go at there own pace and work within their abilities."

*** Lesson Details ***
20+ years experience as a musician and teacher Ken has taken self taught route and the lessons route. "I believe 100% that being taught by someone who has sufficient experience really provides the roadway for a solid foundation whether you are planning on being a pro, just for fun and all levels in between. The combination of self-discipline and a good teacher are a must to have as a musician."

Amongst many other approaches of teaching music, I try to instill the 3 most lacking areas most musicians usually have to begin.

1. Sight reading: Unfortunately most common with guitarists! Tablature is a somewhat useful way to start but reading music will open many doors and opportunities for any musician

2. Collaboration: A teacher provides one way of collaboration as well as a band or an ensemble at school or in the community.

3. Improvisation: I provide a music theory background and I have a method plan for chord progressions, and help with learning the entire guitar.

I take step-by-step approaches towards giving a student encouragement and instilling music appreciation. I am very organized so every lesson will be documented and we will work on specific areas of fundamental development. Most of all have fun! That what gets us playing music in the first place!

I look Forward to meeting you!

Ken is an awesome teacher and an great person. He teaches my 5 year daughter and she loves his lessons and his jovial approach. Within 4 weeks, she has picked up a lot of things and is improving day by day. He is patient as you ought to be with the kids and yet persistent enough to stick to the task.

I am really looking forward to them picking up songs in the coming lessons. I will recommend him anytime and completely vouch for his credentials and ability as an excellent guitarist as well as teacher.

David W.

Berkeley, CA

I have studied Flamenco for around 17 years. over 10 teachers on guitar, 8 years in a band playing Flamenco Rumba, and doing the odd gig on cajon or palmas. Since 2003, I have been primarily studying Cante Flamenco as well.

About David

Hi there, and thanks for viewing my TakeLessons profile! I am excited to be a part of the team in Berkeley, CA.

I started teaching lessons while in music school for Classical Guitar in 1996. From 1998 onwards, I played with a variety of musicians from Africa and Latin America, as well the as great American traditions of gospel, funk, jazz, and bluegrass. All the while, I continued to study music theory and composition, on my own and in private lessons with both well-known players and local professionals. Flamenco and Indian Classical music have also been great interests which I am still in
volved with.

Though guitar is generally my "go-to" instrument, I often use a MIDI keyboard for composition, and studied/performed on bass for 10 years. The last few years, I have begun to develop my voice as well.

Since 2006, I have been teaching music theory and composition at Ex’pression College in Emeryville. This is a digital production environment for the arts, and my students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are musicians/aspiring musicians, and some are primarily interested in working with technology; but all are audio enthusiasts and love music!

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether you are a complete beginner or have been playing gigs for years, are very young or old, I have something to offer you!

How we structure lessons depends in part on you and your goals, as well as your learning style. Having taught music for over 15 years, I have a large amount of resources at my disposal, and can either teach from a method book, or a variety of materials, some of which are my own creations.

I also like to use technology as a teaching aid, and can show you how to use your own computer, keyboard, or music production application (garageband, etc) to practice and create music at home. Another thing that I offer is to make recordings of key parts of the lesson, either as an audio or video file, or both. These can be shared with you through email, dropbox, or a flash drive if you bring one along to your lesson.

Please contact TakeLessons if you have any further questions! I look forward to meeting and working with you or your child.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio: Front room with computer station, guitars, music stand. Waiting area with couches and table, and parents can sit in on lessons. Street parking available, no pets.

College: practice rooms and classrooms available with computers and MIDI controllers.

*** Specialties ***
On guitar and bass, I have experience in world music including Africa, Latin America, and Flamenco. I also love American traditional music, including funk, jazz, rock, and gospel. I specialize in teaching music theory and composition, no matter what instrument. Rhythmic concepts applied to any instrument are a favorite topic.

Music Theory
AMAZING!

I met Dave in my music theory class at Ex'pression college. He's the reason why I'm making music today. I went from not knowing a thing about music theory or a piano to creating chord progressions, understanding modes, intervals, modal interchange, and how to read sheet music. He's extremely patient, professional, and easy to get along with. His passion for music and teaching is infectious, I highly recommend!!!

great instructor!

I have learned so much in the little time I've been taking lessons with David.

Not only is he extremely talented, but he's also very patient when it comes to teaching (which is necessary when I don't grasp the techniques right away).

I started off as a beginner, knowing nothing about how to play the guitar, and am now recognizing notes and memorizing and playing full songs.

He is very flexible with hours, and genuinely has a passion for Flamenco music!

Two thumbs up!!

Fun and tremendously helpful

I started taking lessons with David mostly because I felt a little "stuck"; I have a decent amount of experience, but that wasn't translating into real progress. After a few lessons, a lot of odd issues have cleared up and I can hear the difference when I mess around.

David's quite flexible. I'm not a real beginner, but more of an "intermediate" level. So our sessions tend to be driven by something I've done over the last week, as opposed to the "method driven approaches" that tend to happen with less experienced players. David usually acts like a mentor, giving me an absolute brain dump pretty much each session.

So far, I haven't ran into any subject he hasn't had a lot to show me, so I expect to learn a lot from him.

Jard D.

San Francisco, CA

About Jard

A sensitive musician with an eclectic repertoire and diverse training, Jard began his fascination with music at an early age. With over twelve years of professional teaching and performing experience, he is well versed in both classical and popular music idioms. At an early age he won first prize in the 1997 Florida Mars Music Electric Guitar Competition. Since then, Jard has received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Central Florida as well a Master of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

While at the University of Central Florida he studied with D
r. Eladio Scharron and won the first prize in the University of Central Florida Concerto Competition. He later performed Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez and Vivaldi's Concerto in D major with the University of Central Florida Chamber Orchestra. At the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Jard studied privately with the esteemed artists David Tanenbaum and Dusan Bogdanovic. As an ensemble player, he has performed in several world premier performances from notable composers.

As a recitalist he frequently concertizes at a diverse array of venues from formal recitals to charitable causes such as fund raising dinners and performances at juvenile detention centers. Recent performances include a recital at Pro Arts through Bay Area Classical Harmonies and a benefit dinner through the Canvas Underground organization. Jard has a passion for teaching and has extensive experience with instruction of all age and skill levels.

Jard currently resides in San Francisco, California. When he is not honing his performance and teaching skills, he maintains a healthy obsession with cooking, coffee roasting, photography, travel, rock and ice climbing, and ski mountaineering. Jard plays on a spruce top guitar built in 2004 by the late Paulino Bernabe of Madrid.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am emphatic about getting to know my students and tailoring my approach to their particular needs and interests. While understanding that everyone has different musical goals and needs, I also believe that anyone who wishes to progress as a musician must acquire an understanding of the language of music and maintain a specific technical skill set. My primary goal as a music pedagogue is to give my students the tools they need to become autonomous musicians. Keeping in mind that we all listen to and perform music for enjoyment, I ensure that the foundation of my teaching style rests on student feedback and the pursuit of happiness.

Whether my students wish to pursue a professional career, or simply want to learn guitar as a casual hobby, they typically only see me for one hour a week. My main emphasis is helping students view their performance objectively and acquiring an acute sense of self observation. Ultimately, everyone is their own teacher the majority of the time; I strive to give my students the skills they need to make progress when I am not there.

To ensure that lessons are both motivational and fun I encourage my students to help create a list of repertoire pieces (whether they are simply riffs or licks from popular music or entire suites chosen from the canon of classical literature) to both aspire to and work on. My job is to help help set goals with these pieces and extract a didactic purpose from them. In doing so I help shift attention to parts that suit the students particular musical and technical needs. I am very passionate about teaching and nothing gives me greater joy than seeing my students rejoice in their their progress and enjoy the ephemeral moments of their performances.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Family room set up for lessons, an extra guitar and music stands, foot stools and tuners

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide many music and method books. I do expect the student to have a guitar and music stand. Sometimes I expect them to buy books.

*** Specialties ***
Although I am fluent in an array of styles such as rock, metal, blues and jazz, I specialize in classical guitar performance.
