I've been teaching violin for over ten years, and I've always found that a strengths-based, supportive stance is the strongest filter through which to receive the challenging material and feedback you'll be getting as you learn to play this difficult instrument. I will point out your strengths, so you can nuture them, and build on those strengths to a solid technique and explore them to find your unique musicality. I am your coach, and I am here to see you succeed!

I have been playing classical violin since I was three years old. After high school I switched to fiddling, and now my main interested is improvisation. I can teach you technique, musicality, and freedom, and open you up to a beautiful and diverse world of music!
My first goal is to create and environment in which you can have fun, feel free to express yourself and to experiment. You will not love playing music if you constantly feel frustrated and limited! After that, we create the goals!
I have been described as “results oriented,” “a true musician,” “sensitive,” and “patient.” In fact, I am extremely impatient. However, compassion dominates my personality during lessons and, I daresay, during the rest of my life as well. I give my best, which means among so many other things, allowing each student the tempo of learning that is right for them.
My teaching is best suited for those people who have a desire to play as well as they can within the time constraints of their lives, or have a desire to be professionals and/or who strongly desire personal growth. This applies to children whose parents have for them a similar desire, though of course I teach more simply and in terms kids understand. One of the benefits of a free half hour in-person consultation is a chance to get acquainted with students, and for them to become acquainted with me. This is true for both pros and beginners.

Experienced teacher of all ages, Hilary Lewis, works with students as young as 4 years old up through adults. Ms. Lewis holds an Artist Diploma from the San Francisco Academy Orchestra in Orchestral Studies and is an avid performer of chamber music. Students in her studio currently quality violin technique, music theory, and variety of music choice in their lessons. Students have the option to participate in chamber music and performance opportunities as part of her studio.
