What's inside the singing lesson?

Lessons revolve around three basic aspects which are training, singing, and acting.

In training, definitely be ready for some scale exercises. If you want to work on making your vibrato faster, breathe better, sing more loud or soft, sing short or longer phrases, co
ntrolling your mix, executing your melismas, r&b licks, blue notes, bending notes, singing super high notes and transitioning down to lower notes: balancing head and chest voice, and expanding your range, then vocal training is what you'll need. Most of this activity involves matching sounds to custom scales played on a piano.

In singing, definitely have a song in mind you want to work on. Then we'll discuss which techniques and skills that are essential for that particular genre of music. Other than that, you'll learn singer's diction and will know how to control vowel sounds and consonants more efficiently. Most of this activity involves you singing either a line, a verse, chorus, bridge, or the entire song. It really depends on what level you feel comfortable at. Most of this activity revolves around breathing techniques, phrasing techniques, and you singing the melody correctly on pitch.

In acting, whether you're recording or performing, you'll still need to put an act together. Portrayal of emotions are quite the essential skills to make your sound believable. If singing with feeling is not working out for you, then you might want to consider working on some basic acting skills. Some of the skills covered are voice inflections, rhythm, gestures, body language, and facial expressions. Most of this activity involves you expressing yourself as an artist.

How to be prepared for the lesson?

If you do not have a piano or recording device on hand, I'll provide both devices for you. It's recommended to provide a piano. It doesn't have to be expensive, it just has to be in tuned. If it's digital, you should be fine. It's also recommended to have a recording device. Many clients enjoy recording their lessons on their mp3 players or any other computer devices. Please have a clean and clear space with an electrical outlet for the piano and recording device. Other than that, please wear comfortable clothing as if you are about to play a sport or an activity you enjoy. If you want to dress like a super star that's fine too.

If you're taking lessons online, don't worry about anything because everything will be provided.

I'm a trans guy. As I transitioned from soprano to tenor, Varin helped me figure out how to use my new voice, on a conceptual and practical level. Overall, it was a great experience.

Walnut, CA

About Lily

With a Masters in Music Performance from The Ohio State University, and an accredited Suzuki violin teacher from training program at The School for Strings, NYC. I have 6 years private teaching experience and 1 year group class teaching experience at Jefferson Academy at The Ohio State University. I am able to work with different ages of students with patience and passion.

*** Lesson Details ***
I use Suzuki violin books for beginners. In this series, I would like students to follow the order of each piece to build up their violin skill. I emphasize building a strong foundation of a good b
ody posture including bow-hold. For more advanced student, we can use Suzuki book 4 or above and other similar level repertoire to build up their musicality and the knowledge of each composer.

I've been teaching piano for 3 years. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to learn basic piano-playing posture and the basic knowledge on piano. As time goes on, you'll be able to reach to intermediate level. I typically use Faber piano book series.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Violin and music stand

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my violin with me, students should have their own instruments (violin/piano) and a music stand (for violin students).

*** Specialties ***
I teach classical violin and piano.
Beginning to Intermediate Piano Lesson for All Ages.
Beginning to Advanced Violin Lesson for All Ages.
An accredited Suzuki Violin Teacher.

Lily has been teaching violin to my 10 years old son for the past 10 months. We find her to be kind, patient, positive, and understanding. She is not overly strict nor critical, which fits well with my son's personality. She is mind-mannered so we do not feel pressure or discouraged when you are just learning and making mistakes. We are pleased with the progress my son has made in the past 10 months.

It has been several months now since my ten year old son switched to Lily. Lily has been doing a wonderful job on motivating my son who used to dread of going to violin lessons a lot. In addition to being patient and encouraging, Lily's musical expertise is also incredible.

It was my very first lesson, but she got right to work. After a few questions, she was able to personalize my lesson to my background level. I enjoyed all of the exercises she presented, and the song I had prepared already sounds better after her critique. 30 minutes went by very quickly, and I already wish I had scheduled longer! Thank you Amy and I am looking forward to our next session ☺️

I, myself, was a peer of Mike's at the University of Redlands. We both studied jazz guitar performance and have performed together on multiple occasions. Even so, Mike's ability as a performer far surpassed any of his colleagues'. In fact, his capabilities on the guitar were so outstanding that I decided that I would take lessons with him, in addition to regular lessons with my school instructor. To my surprise, the only thing better than listening to Mike's playing was his ability to transfer his knowledge to others.

His lessons are always conducted in a professional and friendly manner. I always left with a deeper understanding of music and as an improved player.

He is well versed in many styles and his professional experience as a musician is something to be sought after when looking for a guitar teacher. His understanding of the instrument and music theory will ensure that whatever questions you may have, he will know the answer. No matter where your skill level is, there will always be something to learn from this man.

Before I started taking lessons with Mike I was able to play the guitar but wasn't very experienced. Mike and I set a plan for myself that I would enjoy but also get me to be able to play what I wanted to play. He even helped me through some of my music classes at my college (Music Theory, Musicianship, Jazz, etc.) and taught me to apply what I was learning to the guitar. He taught me how to read music, play blues and jazz, and overall become a better musician.

He was challenging but made it overall fun and exciting. Whenever I ran into a problem he was able to break it down and figure out what I needed to do to get over it.

He is a great teacher and I am really grateful I started taking lessons with mike. I strongly recommend him; whether you have just started out and just want to learn or an experienced musician trying to get better, he will help you get there.

Our 17 year old son has been taking lessons from Mike for more than 3 years. When he started out with Mike he figured he'd try lessons for a month or so, since then he's never considered stopping.
We feel very fortunate to have found Mike, if you are a beginner or experienced player that wants to expand your skills Mike is your guy.

My son started out as a raw beginner and has developed into a talented player that has a solid understanding of music theory, can write original songs, plays classical, blues, jazz, metal, classic rock and can shred like you wouldn't believe. Mike has kept it interesting and challenging all this time
