I began piano lessons at four years of age, and was blessed to have an amazing piano teacher, who taught me for 14 years. She gave me a passion to teach others and impart to them a love for music. I have carried on that calling and taught hundreds of adults and children over the last 30 years. I am very thorough in my method and customize each lesson around the goals and dreams of each student. I incorporate theory, ear training and technical into all my lessons, regardless of the style of music they are learning. This gives my students an all-round musical education and appreciation for this wonderful gift they have in their hands.

I have experience in the professional music world as a pianist and french horn player, performing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera Chorus and Orchestra, Sydney Sinfonia, Sydney Philharmo
nic Orchestra and Choir, as well as productions of "Cats", "Phantom of the Opera", Sesame Street, and touring all over Australia, U.S.A. and Israel. I have also been a part of the worship teams at Hillsong Church and C3 Church Australia.

I studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and also received my Licentiate Diploma from the Trinity College of London (L.T.C.L.) in French Horn (Teaching) and Licentiate Diploma from the Trinity College of London (L.T.C.L.) in Piano (Performance). So my experience not only comes from an inspiring teacher, but also from hundreds of performances on stages across the world working with the finest of musicians, singers, conductors and worship leaders.

I love music, and more so, love imparting it to others.

My teaching includes basic musical terms and symbol recognition, staff, notes, and pitches names, ear training, note values, time signatures, rhythm, repeat signs and first and second endings, dynamics, D.C. D,S, Coda and Fine, accidentals (flats and sharps), chord progressions, Circle of Fifths, roman numeral chord analysis, and basic composition.

About Karen
Karen R. was born and raised in a musical family in Lindstrom, Minnesota. Karen has loved to sing and play instruments almost all of her life, and became passionate about music early in her childhood. She has played 7 instruments proficiently including piano, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, ukulele, trombone, recorder, and voice (also an instrument). As a child, Karen took private instruction in piano and classical guitar. She sang and played guitar in her first band in the fifth grade! In high school she played trombone in band, bass guitar in stage band, and sang in the high school choir and stage chorus. In high school, she also sang and played acoustic and bass guitar in a rock band called the 6 pack, who performed for school dances and community events. Karen was also the singer and guitarist, leading the Young Life group. Even though
Karen has had training in many instruments, she has had the most training in voice.

As an adult, Karen has sung extensively in church choirs, women's ensembles, and has been a featured vocal soloist at church services, Christian retreats, and women's ministry events. She was extensively involved in vocal music at Grace Community Christian Church, where she was the singer and guitarist leading and teaching songs to women Bible study groups, preschoolers at vacation Bible school, and Kids Praise Club for elementary aged children. For Kids Praise Club, she also taught the children the choreography for the performances. Presently, Karen is a Choir Director for the K-6 Choristers group at First Presbyterian Church (FPC) in Mesa, AZ., and also taught singing and choreography to the children at VBS at FPC. Karen also had a main roles as Mrs. Paroo in The Music Man in April of 2013, and Mrs. Bucket in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in April, 2014, The Jailer's Daughter in Wind in the Willows, and Mrs. Brill in Mary Poppins, Mrs. Darling and a Pirate in Peter Pan, performed by the First Players at FPC. Additionally. Karen is presently a substitute elementary school and music teacher at Grace Christian Academy, Bethany Christian School, and teaches General Music K-12 at Young Disciples Christian Academy part-time.

During Karen's college career, she was a voice major at Mesa Community College (MCC) and Grand Canyon University (GCU). At MCC, she performed in the Sun Valley Chorale (SVC) and Cadence women vocal jazz ensemble. SVC performed classical songs at the Mesa Arts Center, and Cadence performed jazz songs for MCC events. Karen was also involved in musical theater at MCC. Karen was an opera singer at Night at the Opera, and a Broadway singer at Broadway Bound, both at MCC. At GCU, Karen has been in the President Singers, Canyon Singers, Canyon Chorale, and Union Choirs. Canyon Singers were the honor students and ambassadors for GCU who traveled locally and out of state to recruit students for GCU. As a voice major, Karen has had 9 semesters (4 ½ years) of private voice instruction under the tuteladge of Dr. Cathy Hauan at MCC, and Dr. Sheila Corley at GCU. Karen has three degrees from GCU: A Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a Minor in Music, a Master's of Education in Reading and Curriculum, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. Music is Karens passion and she desires to teach it to all ages and stages of people. Music is the universal language and creates joy and healing in the soul.

Presently, Karen owns her own home music studio called Starshine School of Music in which she teaches piano, voice, and guitar. Karen also teaches Take Lessons music students (an online music student placement company) piano, voice, and guitar in her home. Karen is also an active Mary Kay Consultant.

Karen's teaching style is very patient, nurturing, encouraging, and fun-loving. Karen is a teacher who sets loving but firm boundaries and guidelines. She implements structure and organization, but is not overly strict and harsh. She believes in encouraging, loving, and imparting knowledge with her students so that they will maximize their potentiality and their inner musical stars will shine.
Karen teaches piano, voice, guitar, and music theory for beginning through intermediate (for voice she teaches beginning through advanced). The curriculum that Karen uses is varied according to the student's personality and learning level. She uses her vast knowledge and information from her education and past experiences, and also Alfred Essentials of Music Theory, Alfred's Instructional books, Hal Leonard Pro-vocal Series, Faber Piano Adventures for all levels, and other resources. She also uses an assignment lesson plan book so that each student will know her clear objectives, what is expected of them and so that communication is established with the student's parents if the student is under 18. Additionally, Karen uses incentives, a point system, and rewards for self-discipline, consistent practicing, musical accomplishment and growth, and a good attitude.
Karen's students learn and perform remarkably well because of her very loving, organized, and comprehensive teaching style. They progress in amazing ways on a weekly and monthly basis. They look forward to coming to their lessons because they are treated with such respect and care. They know that Karen has such a passion and love for music, which is so contagious and is passed on to them. Some people are afraid of music theory, they think it is a bad word. However, all my instrumental students learn music theory. There is nothing to fear. Music theory is foundational, as important as learning scales and chords. It is necessary to know to play at a high level. In classical music it is an interpretive tool, in jazz it is a tool for improvising. Like note reading, it opens up entire worlds for us to explore. It is FUN!

I teach theory, composition, and improvisation to students of all instruments, even instruments I do not play. I love working with violinists, vocalists, even dulcimer players. I am also available to tutor those who are prepping for high school and college.

My basic chord function theory course is twelve lessons / assignments. With that information students have the knowledge to progress to analytical and improvisational concepts. With some time and effort, everyone I've taught has learned it happily and easily.

I teach music. The guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele just happen to be the particular instruments I choose. Music as a language, discipline, and art, is the goal. I've been teaching, performing, studying, composing, for some thirty years. I've studied and gigged in the classical, jazz, rock, blues, R & B, and country idioms. *** Lesson Details ***
I am laid back, but at the same time very goal directed. I like to do technique and/or vocabulary, note reading, and songs every lesson. After six months students are able to to 'jam', (improvise over chord changes such as the blues). They are well on their way to becoming literate, probably a third way through the first book. They probably can play a half dozen songs well, and are starting to strum (comp) chord progressions in a musically rhythmic way. They may even have played in a couple concerts by then.

Stephanie Hoeckley is an award-winning flutist and teacher in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Recognized as a skilled performer, Ms. Hoeckley placed 1st in the Arizona Flute Society's 2017 Young Artist Competition, 2nd in 2016, and has been a finalist in the Florida Flute Association’s College Young Artist Competition and Advanced Masterclass. I started taking flute lessons with Stephanie last September 2016. I have been playing flute since 2011 and play regularly at church. I take a hour long lesson. I have really enjoyed taking lessons from her. She has also been willing to adjust to my schedule, when she could, when work won’t allow me to make it to my normal lesson.
I had been taking lessons from another flute teacher since 2011 and knew it was time to change. Stephanie has always been able to help me. She is very knowledgeable about all questions and problems I was having on playing the flute or reading music. When questioning a technique she is able to demonstrate it or explain it in a different way so I could understand it. I’ve always had trouble with the high notes and alternate fingering and she definitely has helped me on those. Stephanie personally is a lot more enjoyable than my last teacher. She always seems happy to see me.
I also play Low Flutes and just bought my first Bass Flute. She also plays low flutes.

I currently teach over 30 students ages 4-75 piano, flute, saxophone, clarinet, recorder, and singing. This is my full time job, this is not a side hobby to make extra cash. I am a professional teacher with a big schedule and flexibility. I do not travel, students come to my home.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
I have taught general music K-8 in a charter school and basically had to build a music program with no funding and almost no supplies. I left this job in favor of teaching privately because the staff and administration were horribly disrespectful and unappreciative of what I did for their school. Teaching privately allows me to teach music passionately without limits (and without administration who know nothing about music telling me what to do!). I can also focus on one student at a time, rather than try to manage an entire cl
ass.

I have taught private lessons for about 13 years. These have mostly been clarinet lessons because that is my primary instrument, but in the last three years, I've expanded what I can teach. At one time, I was teaching several high school students music composition, music theory, and ear training to prepare for college entrance as music composition majors. One of them did get into the Juilliard school and was actually placed in advanced classes because of the theory and ear training work I did with him. I've also taught one of my flute students for years, starting her at an early age first on recorder, switching to fife, and then on to flute. I currently teach several students from 4 yrs old-adult various levels flute, clarinet, and piano.

I have been a music theory/ear training TA at ASU for four years. I can definitely prepare anyone for college level music academics. Most high school band programs do not prepare students for the academic side of music study in college.

LESSONS I TEACH:
Clarinet: All ages (starting 4th/5th grade) and levels
Flute: All ages (starting 3rd/4th grade with fife), beginner to high school level
Piano: All ages (starting at age 4-5) and levels
Recorder: All ages (starting 2nd grade) and levels
Trumpet: All ages (starting 5th grade) beginning only
French Horn: All ages (starting 5th grade) beginning only
Music Theory/Ear Training: recommended for HS students looking for intensive music study in college
Music Composition: recommended for HS students or adults who want to write music, or pursue music composition in college

WHY I TEACH MUSIC:
I love music, and I enjoy passing my passion and knowledge on to others. Watching a student, grow, explore, and enjoy music is a great reward. Music gave me a voice to express myself, and a creative outlet, and I want others to have the same opportunity. I also enjoy the social interaction with students.

WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE LESSONS:
I have a lot to offer students (check out my specialties). A school music teacher or band director doesn't have the time to give one-on-one attention. Nor do they have the chance to go deeper into music with students. I will help you find music that you like at your level, and I will also teach you how to practice and correct bad habits.

MY STUDIO:
I teach in the music room of my house, which is clean and cozy. If you are a parent, my couch in the living room is a comfortable place to wait during the lesson, or you may sit outside on the porch (weather permitting). I live in a quiet suburban neighborhood in Tempe.

LESSON DETAILS:
I am a firm believer in the humanistic approach to learning. I want to teach you what you want to learn, the way you learn best, doing activities that keep you engaged and add growth as a musician. Come to me with your questions, curiosities, and requests for what you want to learn ("How do I play two notes at the same time on the clarinet?" "What is this key for?" "I really want to play Sleigh Ride"). Please bring in any musical goals you may have for yourself. I incorporate meaningful scales and exercises that apply to the music that you are working on (they are not chosen at random). Conducting, ear training, music theory, and music composition are all incorporated into lessons over time (depending on the student's interest). I am aware of the state standards (they are my instinct anyway), but I ultimately analyze your interests and abilities and follow your lead, acting as your guide along the way. My teaching and activities are age appropriate.

If you are interested in music composition lessons, I give advice on your work, give ideas to continue your music, educate you on instrument capabilities, help with orchestration, open your ears to music by others, teach theory/counterpoint/form, give you advice on how to get your music performed, help you use Sibelius software, and help prepare a college portfolio if you are pursuing music composition in college.

~SPECIALTIES~
TEACHING TO CHILDREN AT YOUNG AGES:
If your child is showing interest in music at an early age, I can start as early as age 4 on piano. I use the "Music for Little Mozarts" series that come with cute little puppets, and the storybook lesson style is perfect. I also have 2 nice toy pianos that can be incorporated into the lesson. If your child wants to play a wind instrument at an early age, I start them on recorder at about age 7. I can then switch them over to fife (a smaller simpler flute) in a year or so, and then to flute -or- they can go from recorder to clarinet at about 4th or 5th grade.

INCORPORATING CONDUCTING TECHNIQUES:
If taking lessons on a wind instrument, I teach conducting patterns and techniques so the student learns how to follow a conductor and what it means to lead musicians visually without speaking. Musicians rely a fair amount on body language to communicate while playing together. I've also found that incorporating conducting makes lessons fun, and it improves the student's sense of rhythm and control.

INCORPORATING MUSIC THEORY/EAR TRAINING:
Music is more than just breathing and moving fingers up and down. Great musicians understand music and have good listening skills. Knowing how music works (music theory) actually helps students recognize patterns and learn music faster (or spend less time practicing). Ear training helps with intonation and playing music with others (you'll sound better and notice more detail in music!). I do activities that are age and ability appropriate; most young students love listening games with their instrument.

INCORPORATING MUSIC COMPOSITION:
For variety, I teach students how to use Sibelius (using my computer) to write music for their instrument. This encourages creativity, an awareness of how music works, and helps them learn technology. Plus, they get the pleasure of writing their own music and playing it! I print the music, and it looks like real published music!

SHEET MUSIC:
I love thrift shopping, and I collect lots of music for my students. Music can be expensive, so I try to save you the time and money if possible. I only get used music in good condition.

Jeffrey was very pleasant from the moment I entered the studio. He was very kind and patient as I am a beginner on learning piano. He shared with me that I am not his only beginner student so that afforded me an opportunity to feel a bit more confident. Overall I had a inspiring session and am looking forward to my next lesson.

I believe that any student will practice more if he or she likes the music they are playing. Periodically I will ask a student to give me a name of a piece of music that they would like to learn how to play. I notate it for them, often simplifying the rhythm and chords in Finale NotePad and give it to them free of charge. I teach students how to play music on their given instrument. Not just how to play the instrument but working on technique, finger dexterity, expert note reading ability and total musicianship. How to play a piece of music that will move the audience emotionally. I stress vocabulary and music history and theory as part of being a well-trained musician.

In my opinion, having been an educator in the Isaac School District for many years, Mr. Quintana exhibits excellent teaching techniques and strategies to enable the learner to be successful. He is professional, prepared, courteous, and prompt. For the past 6 years, Mr.Quintana has been my cello instructor. The environment that he creates as an educator provides an excellent foundation for continued learning. Mr. Quintana's knowledge of string instruments and piano are superb.

Victor is a great instructor and a great person. He is wonderful with my young son, who was an absolute beginner when he started lesson with Victor at age 8. My son has a learning disability that makes it harder for him to read music and process instructions. Victor worked with all of that with patience and respect. Now my son can play beautiful songs and perform in front of others. I believe that learning music has also helped my son become better at reading, math, and thinking! Most of all, he feels successful about his guitar skills, which adds to his confidence. I cannot thank Victor enough!

Watching a student learn and grow is more rewarding than anything else.

Furthermore, Music is beneficial! No one thing is better than music for child's development and or for stimulating your own brain. Studies show that it can even help stave off dementia and other results of aging. Why? Music is the only activity that we do that uses All areas of the brain at once. WHAT IS A TYPICAL LESSON LIKE?
- Arrive and get your things out
- Warm-ups: trills, scales, 5 finger patterns, thirds, octaves, etc.
- Did you have trouble on your assignments this week? If so, we'll go directly to that.
- Demonstration of all pieces while working on any problems
- Assignment and demonstration, practice and special directions for each piece.
- Theory check and new assignment. Complete as needed.
- As time permits, review of flashcards, ear training and so forth.
- Music Lab (either before or after the lesson as fits in with the students around you) - 15-20 minutes of independent study: musical computer games to support what we are working on, read books about music, composers, music history and so forth, listen to music as supports what we are working on, complete any missed theory assignments, review of flashcards if needed.

WHO AM I?
I am Karen. I love Music! My family has always incorporated music into our lives. Some of my earliest memories are being danced around in my Mom’s arms and listening to her sing. I began formal lessons on the Piano when I was 7 years old. Growing up also I sang in the Church Choirs, played on Hand Bells, and explored the Flute. I spent a formal year each on Trumpet, Drums and Harpsichord and am currently working on learning Zither, Autoharp, Dulcimer, and Soprano & Alto Recorders, and sometimes the guitar (when I have a chance). Of course, I also regularly read and attend lectures, conferences, seminars and master classes to always improve my teaching skills. I have been teaching piano and music theory for over 31 years in this area and have played professionally. I am a member in good standing with the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and was with the California Association of Music Teachers (CAPMT), Empire Music Teachers Association (EMTA), the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), the Suzuki Association of North America, the National & the Inland Empire Kodaly-Orff Association, and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy – I have not hooked up here yet. I am a fully certified and licensed teacher of Kindermusik and Musikgarten and have earned National Certification (NCTM) through the MTNA and have earned Level I & II (out of 3) in Orff-Scheulwerk. I was District IV Coordinator for CAPMT, and Vice President then President of the EMTA. I keep busy and love teaching!

WHAT DO WE DO HERE?
I try hard to present students with a solid, broad based approach with an emphasis on understanding the fundamentals of musical comprehension, music reading, musical memory, and ear development. These are essential to playing and enjoyment of any instrument! To this end we cover theory, music history, performance, technique and practical application. These basics are supplemented and reinforced by the monthly group sessions, several annual field trips, access to regional, state and national music competitions and performances, as well as the formal Student Evaluations each Spring. I have a full music lab, an extensive library of music and music reference materials and up to date postings on local free or low cost musical events While I tend to emphasize classical music and technique, we will also cover a wide range of music in various meters and modalities: classical, popular and world music in solos and duets. Supplementary books are available: holiday, religious, popular, classical, music from specific times, places, composers, movies... or whatever the student wishes, when they are ready. My personal goal is not to have a studio full of competition performers. A few are always nice of course, but the average student just wants to be able to make music - to make it sing. I DO want them to understand, appreciate, and be able to pick up something and figure it out - or apply what they know to another instrument. Once music is part of a life, it never leaves; it is the one universal language.

My name is Tyler. I have taken lessons on six different instruments with piano being the primary at ten years of lessons. I received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Theory/Composition from Southwest Minnesota State University and moved to the Phoenix area in January of 2016. I teach at a music school five days a week and am looking to fill out my schedule with in-home private lessons. I also teach music at a preschool one morning a week. I've taught, tutored, and mentored students of various levels of skill and I very much enjoy teaching. I strongly believe in developing a student's love for music by allowing them to have a say in what they learn. I believe exposure is one of the best ways to develop a student's taste for music. The appreciation for many genres can open up doorways that would otherwise be inaccessible. I won't let a
student choose the entirety of their curriculum, rather I'll work with them to develop a curriculum that is interesting to them, but also educational. I am definitely available to travel farther, as long as you're not in Chandler. Due to an agreement with the school I teach at, I can not accept students from Chandler.
