I am a string specialist. That means I teach and play violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, ukulele and piano. I earned B.A. earned from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley Colorado where I was a double major in classical guitar and double bass. In my senior year I was the recipient of the Annual Concerto Contest where I performed the "Concerto in A Major" on double bass with the University orchestra for the spring concert. I have played in both professional and semi-professional orchestras in Colorado and Arizona. I believe that any student will practice more if he or she likes the music they are playing. Periodically I will ask a student to give me a name of a piece of music that they would like to learn how to play. I notate it for them, often simplifying the rhythm and chords in Finale NotePad and give it to them free of charge. I teach students how to play music on their given instrument. Not just how to play the instrument but working on ...

Together we will learn the beginning essentials to playing the cello and reading cello music. I focus on good technique from the beginning so a student should expect to spend a good amount of time in lessons on technique exercises and posture checks. We will also learn music based on the student's experience.

I am a classically trained violist and string instrument enthusiast, born and raised in the Chicagoland area. I attended and graduated from Western Michigan University with a BM in music performance and have since worked as a music teacher in San Diego. I am the strings director at Double Peak Scho

"I am brand new to the cello. My first concerns were the ergonomics... how best to hold the cello, my bow, my string hand, posture etc. Victor gave very clear information on all of these and then was able to give exercises to help these. When we moved to the playing, it was the same clear progressive instruction that was a balance of rational progression and inspiration."

"Lenna is an incredible instructor (and person). As an adult beginner, learning the cello has been incredibly challenging (both physically and emotionally). The challenge made it hard to bond with the instrument during my first six months of technical instruction (with another instructor). Along came Lenna, and she inserted exercises into our lessons to address just this, and thanks to her, I have a more peaceful and joyful relationship with my practice. Lenna has an intuitive understanding of what her students need and how to foster healthy and sustainable practice habits. She is professional, encouraging, incredibly patient and she brings must-welcomed creativity to every lesson (in the form of improv, jamming together, describing the character of tones, and more). I highly recommend lessons with Lenna."

What is the Suzuki Cello Method?

The Suzuki method, founded in 1945 by violinist Shinichi Suzuki as the Talent Education Movement, is one of the most enduring teaching methods, or pedagogies for young string players. Suzuki’s main goal for his music education system was to give students a “noble spirit,” which would instill respect and cooperation through his method. The method was brought to America in the 1960s by John D. Kendall, and today the Suzuki Association of the Americas instructs new teachers and studen …

Is Cello Hard to Learn? Read THIS Before Taking Lessons

Many beginning musicians wonder, “Is cello hard to learn?” The process of learning the cello is not difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cello is not an instrument of instant gratification. It does require focused, daily practice time and a good teacher to guide you along the way. How far you progress with cello is a direct result of the amount of quality time you put into practicing the instrument. Even someone who puts in just 30 minutes a day will notice a signi …

Popular Cello Songs for Adult Beginners

The cello is an absolutely beautiful instrument that calls countless numbers of people to play it. Adult students are sometimes the most challenging to find pieces for as they don’t want to play the “kiddie” songs that many younger students are excited about. These pieces for younger students are short, based on simple folk songs that children know, and generally do not feel challenging enough for many adult students. So what popular cello pieces are out there that adult students can u …
